In October 1914, barely a month after the outbreak of the First World War, Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, established a public fund to send every member of the British Empire Armed Forces a Christmas Gift. The gift took the form of a stamped brass box filled with tobacco, candy, Christmas cards and other assorted items, over 2 million of which were distributed between 1914 and 1920.
