I think I've watched this 3 or 4 times now, and I'm finally realizing the seriousness of the message behind this portrayal of this tale. The princess is an emotionally neglected child without the education or vocabulary to communicate her emotional needs to her father. Her father is a stereotypical person of duty with very little time for emotions or feelings even for himself. What the princess wants more than anything is acceptance, in full and unconditionally, from her father. When her father finally does decide to do something "for her" he still makes it about himself and fails to acknowledge how much more stress he's put on his daughter to just have fun. He's put her under a microscope. Already she has always felt the pressure to repress her true self, and now there's an event celebrating it and if she lets her true self out--just to laugh--she potentially puts her ability to be happy every again at complete risk of loss. It's actually pretty intense.

RIP Howard Hessman, there was an anthology comedy show on CBS in the late 80's where he played a writer sick of this bunny character he made. The scene where the bunnies get run over by the train is funny as hell.

The Princess Who Never Laughed is actually a faerie tale from the Pentamerone (Or Tales of Tales) by Giambattista Basile which is like The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights. Also just as adult and bloody. Shelley Duvall's of course isn't like the original but I love this one as well.

My dad came home from the video store one weekend with a VHS of this episode. He hadn't just rented it--he had bought it. We watched it that evening and I found myself so disgusted by the fact that the awkward and completely unfunny Howie Mandel was in it that I never watched it again. Not until today, 30 years later. In my old age, I am more appreciative of the supporting cast, primarily the narrator, William Daniels, who I absolutely loved in his role as John Adams in 1776, not to mention Knight Rider and Boy Meets World. My ex-wife had the pleasure of meeting him, the lucky old banger. And though I still cannot stand 80's-era Howie Mandel, I can't help but wonder how he, with his extreme germaphobia, was able to handle that pig and get into bed with the other actors. He must have had to personally oversee the production's pre-shoot bathing and disinfecting regimen because there's no way he would have set foot on that set if there was even the slightest hint of contamination.
