a damn shame about all the business of him being a creep ... Searle has got a lot of good lectures out there. Happy to see you re-uploading them. Thanks much as always, PO

He must be a pragmatist about ethics too. Lost so much respect for him. No integrity left in that man.

The recording seems cut short to just before he gets around to making his main point of rescuing naive realism. Is there a more complete recording of his lecture?

How can naive realism be saved? The brain deals with transformed signals, neurons, synapses, and neuroimpulses. So there is no direct perception. You cannot see the world directly. only through neuroimpulses in the brain. Just as it cannot be called direct, naive realism when you see a person on a computer monitor. This is not a real person, but a transformed one. Copy. Similarly, you can only see a COPY of the world, but not directly.

28:19 Sound wave and sound isn't the same? Or prof. Searle distinct a mechanic oscillation of particles from what happens in our ears.

It's not about what's going on in your ears. It's about how the brain interprets it. The final result of what is happening in your ears is only neuroimpulses. And that's what the brain is dealing with. And not with vibrations of sound waves. And only after the brain perceives these neuroimpulses does the SENSATION of sound arise. By the way, the neuroimpulses coming from the ears are exactly the same in nature as the neuroimpulses coming from the optic nerve.
