Game journalists can’t play games. That’s why these “push up to proceed” movie games score so high

I suppose Senua’s games really differentiates as a “game” vs a “experience”. The first game I would give it a 4-5/10 as a “game”, but as it was an amazing and immersive look into Senuas world I would give it a 8/10 as an “experience”. Game critique can be hard ;-) I haven’t played this game yet, it remains to be seen if the mediocre gameplay can detract from the experience as a whole. But I will wait for a sale!

Literally this. The people who gave high marks see it as an "experience", for which it is fantastic and those who wanted more of a "game" gave it lower marks because it fails to hit those marks. Personally, i loved the experience but i fall at around a 7 but can truly understand both the higher and lower scores.

Games can be both a game and experience. Look at nier automata. It used the medium of games to tell a story. A very good one at that. The gameplay was great as well. This was a lazy tech demo

lol, let's be honest, A cinematic female fronted UE5 technical showcase won't get a negative review from these journalists.

10:07 - Idk man... I dont think Sudokus are especially challenging. Or crosswords. Or Wordle. But they're still satisfying to figure out.

My thing about this game that separates it from other story focused games is that it lacks balance. From what I’ve seen from most story focused action games (modern Final Fantasy, Spider-Man, God Of War, Batman Arkham, etc) is that’s those games have a gameplay to story/scripted segment ratio that follows what I call the “80:20/70:30” rule, where it’s 70-80% gameplay and 20-30 cutscenes and scripted moments. From what I know of Hellblade, it seems to be more 10:90 as far as the gameplay to story ratio goes. Because of that, it feels even less like a game than other games which she’s the purpose of being cinematic. I personally wanna make my own video on this game and how it fails as a video game, but I think it should be known that when you talk about a “movie game”, THIS is a movie game.

I liked Hellblade 2 for what it was, but I don't really think of it as a "game" in the same way I would for, say, Doom Eternal. I think of it more as a real-time art piece. I think that's the biggest issue with score-based reviews -- video games as a medium is just too multi-faceted and complex to reduce down to a single standardized score.

Great vid, I've finally subbed, lol. I would love to hear your take on "Mature Games" or "Mature stories that changed gaming".

To put it simple, it is impressive game thats why critics are giving it 9 and 10 but also this is very boring game and that's why gamers are giving it 3 and 4.

It's pretty obvious - game journalists want to be seen as credible, so whenever they see a game they feel is equivalent to high art they praise it to try and boost their own egos. It's why walking simulators/games with heavy politicised themes like Gone Home were lauded, despite having next to no gameplay or player agency whatsoever. The issue is games aren't movies; they're games. They need to play well as games first and be an 'experience' second. A truly great game is both.

Absolutely wonderfully said. It's becoming the games equivalent to "Oscar Baiting" where being a game is less important than what the (((Message))) it portrays is. See: Last of Us 2, God of War 2 etc.

I remember when game journalism was done strictly out of two different magazines, and we could literally see the reviewers having arguments in the article themselves. There were standards, you could literally pick out which reviewer from what publication was more like yourself and could determine if you would like something based off of a few screenshots and words. Today game journalism should not be considered credible. I hope you don't take my comment as disagreeing with you, I don't. Just kind of feeling the pains of being older than most around here, and remembering the good times when people would just print their truths, and gaming companies had to earn good scores not pay for them.

The real problem though is that any clueless dude can make a review on line. Oh,by clueless I mean you,not the reviewers you are ranting about.

Well then let's be glad that he doesn't work for anyone but himself. The fact of the matter is the people who are supposed to be subjective about the entirety of the game are simply stuck on one aspect of it and saying it's a good game all around based off one of the 8 core tenets of a video game. What's ruining the gaming environment wholeheartedly, is these objective truth mouthpieces such as IGN and alike, are supposed to be looked at as being honest and critical, they haven't been. This is a KZitemr who will reach very little outside of his own community whereas most sources that decided to go yard on this game, have millions of viewers to their products. Not to mention the inability to hear someone else's opinion without becoming a total troglodyte. Oh, and by that, I meant you. Be well.

Found the pony lol this isn’t just about hellblade 2 being a good game, it’s about how they were able to make a video game a very visually appealing masterpiece, something that straight out beat PlayStation 🤷🏻♂️

I love walking around with a torch and lighting other torches in games like Witcher 3 and AC: Odyssey, but if those games were nothing but that, I'd lose my mind.

The copium among repeatedly-soured Xbox fans surrounding Hellblade 2 can at least be explained, but I don't even want to know what those journalists were smoking when they wrote that stuff.

I do appreciate the game for what it is, a stunning showcase of current UE5 rendering technology. However, you CAN have stunning showcases of rendering technology and still have a fun game built into it, like Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2, two games absolutely pushing what is possible in real-time graphics on PC AND they're interesting as video games too. There is no excuse.
