iron oxides (the tint in tinted sunscreen) are likely to be contaminated with nickel. If you have a nickel allergy, like I do, it can cause irritation, itching, or worst a rash/swelling. Tinted sunscreens make my face itch after just an hour or two…. I prefer zinc oxide mineral sunscreens for this reason. I just found this out after having reactions to black mascara which also contains iron oxides for the black pigment. Please be careful!! This has helped me so much I had no idea why my face was reacting to the tinted sunscreen and I kept blaming it on my skincare routine, thinking my AHAs were the culprit for my skin sensitivity.

What an amazing and informative video! As a teenager, in the '70's. I spent days at the beach. swimming in the ocean, reading, playing games with friends. I tanned easily, but I slathered a clear thick sunscreen named Block Out on my skin all day long. I used a bottle or more each week of the summer and I did not get sunburned, but I became darker and darker every week. My parents lectured me that I was harming my skin and that I should be in the shade most of the day. Now, nearly 70 years old, I have new sunspots appearing on my face and many white spots on my forearms. I am so happy to learn about the ingredients in sunscreens that can protect my skin and will pass this new knowledge on to my grown children. I buy special swimsuits for my grandchildren to help protect their skin, and happily, they always use those sunscreens that appear white and unattractive. Wearing hats, outdoors, is a rule at Grandma's house!

Dear Maren, Last year, Avene in France started to sell their new chemical sunscreen which protects against blue light, up to 450 nm. Its name is Intense Protect SPF 50 plus (60 plus) fragrance free, 150 ml, 120 min water resistance, face and body, children and adults. That is thanks to their newly patented filter TriAsorB (trade name) which protects against UVA and blue light. That is hybrid filter, it is insoluble chemical filter which is very similar to metal oxides. Beacuse of that it stains the textile immediately and permanently. Avene has made a statement regarding that problem and I hope their chemists will fix it. However, that is the general problem with ALL chemical and tinted sunscreens, so I mainly use the best non tinted mineral sunscreens. You cannot expect that someone will be putting STAINING product every day on face, ears, lips, both sides of the neck, upper chest and hands and wear business shirts, suits, coats etc. ! FDA and chemists WAKE UP !

Great video, You can also wear foundation on top on your sunscreen, and will be protect from visible light. What nobody talks is that in the 🇺🇸 we are so behind when it comes to UVA filters, the use super old filters with low UVA protection, since I stared using European sunscreen my hyperpigmentation fade 10x times faster. Also you also Asian sunscreen are another great option.

Thanks a lot for doing this video. I just hope that this will work for those of us who are on the V and VI levels of the Fitzpatrick scale. I've tried Elta MD, Solar Science and Dermatology tinted sunscreens and they were just not cosmetically elegant on my dark skin tone. More often than not we are so disappointed when sunscreen manufacturers claim that their products 'do not leave any white cast and are great for "all" skin tones.' This statement doesn’t have in mind those of us who are richly melanated.

Problem is, when you use sunscreens that are tinted, especially really dark tints depending on your skin tone, they can really rub off on clothing and if you’re applying a full fingers worth to your face as you should AND reapply, it can feel very inelegant for that type of product (for physical sunscreens). Chemical filters are just a better way to go.. *cough cough* European filters if you can get your hands on them. I’ve been using Eucerins dry touch spf 50+ and it comes in 6oz. Nicest feeling and best value sunscreen I’ve found to date… and 0 white cast (all thanks to chemical filters)! The amount of sunscreen you typically get like Avene for a tinted formula seems actually counterintuitive because the smaller amount of sunscreen a consumer gets, may actually discourage them from applying the (large) amount they should be, as it would be pretty expensive to apply that much for a very tinted product and a very minimal amount of product you’d get. Btw if you’re worried about HEV light and infrared light, Eucerin mentions their formula has protection against those wavelengths as well! (No this is not an ad lol)

@@jam6web84 I’m not sure but realistically speaking, companies that claim to protect against blue light either way I’m a bit suspicious. Unless the ingredients are iron oxides or the patented filter from avene that just released for blue light I can’t say for sure. After doing some reading, it seems like using products with iron oxide is not the only way to get protection from the effects of visible light. Also there doesn’t appear to be any standard (like spf 30 or pa+++) to know the right amount needed to actually be effective. Other than physically avoiding light, using products with antioxidants (like vitamin E) can help bcz they can supposedly counteract the free radical damage (oxidative stress) caused by visible light. But again, there is no standard to know the right amount or combination of antioxidants needed to actually be effective. So what to do? YOLO. But I enjoy watching educational videos like this to help become more intentional about purchases.

I'm in the same boat and that's why I'm actually looking through the comments. It's like 95% of tinted sunscreens are either too dark or too orangey or peachy. Or, too greasy. Thinksport does make a tinted sunscreen that is actually perfect for us fair/pale skinned people. It's like that perfect ivory shade that you would find in foundation. But personally I find it to be too greasy, and the fragrance is a little strong. The Australian G old Botinical had a matte finish, but was too peachy. And the Mychelle tinted sunscreen in their lighest shade is way too dark. I would love a tinted sunscreen that is for pale people, not heavily fragranced, and not greasy. And if it was affordable that of course would be optimal.

Thank you so much, Dr. Locke! I've learned so much from this video! Currently, I am using Australian Gold tinted sunscreen and I can say it's my holy grail, but I want to explore other options as well. I am suffering from a hormonal acne and using prescription tretinoin so my face became more sensitive and I now have a combination skin (I have oily skin before). I have sensitive skin ever since so I don't apply anything on my face even a face powder because I tend to have pimples immediately. But, when I was diagnosed with hormonal acne, that's when I dive in into skincare and been watching videos of dermatologists to learn. I am struggling to find the right products for my skin because it is very sensitive and most of the products that claim they are for sensitive skin, still burns me. Also, I am in a place with very limited options. I am stressed with his acne, but I am still positive in this journey and will continue learning and taking care of my skin through these kind of videos. Please don't get tired of helping people like us. Stay strong! May God bless you more!

Thank you , Doctor, for this informative video. However, we have to consider that wearing a tinted sunscreen for a *man* is difficult to pull off on a daily basis. Almost no one around me even knows about the importance of wearing sunscreen and no one wears it! Currently, I wear Neutrogena Ultra Sheer because of *no tint/cast*, *no unpleasant/strong scent*, *not excessively oily/heavy* and *accessibility (price, availability)*. Just for my hands, face, ears and neck, if I follow dosage and frequency, I go through a 3 oz tube in about a month. That's not including arms and legs if I'm not at work. I keep watching videos and read about various brands and options but in the end, the NUS seems to be the most practical in every way. What is a guy to do? 😔

The idea of using tinted sunscreens is nice but not new ( at least to me ). Sunscreens are meant to be a MEDICINE against UVA and UVB rays, the other parts ( antioxidant, visible light, blue light, IFR... ) are just optional. I would rather put Niod Survival 0 ( or Skinbetter Alto Advanced, if I'm rich like crazy ) on my face before a good suncreen to have some additional effects I've listed above. That means SUNSCREENS must be STRONG enough to do its job: UVA1, UVA2 & UVB. If the one you are going to wear is not good enough to protect you from UVA & UVB, then the bonus Iron Oxide means nothing.

Those are moving to the top of my choices. I have heard bloggers recommend using a concealer a few shades darker than your skin under foundation to help conceal dark spots and to make undereye bags appear to recede. Sounds like the darker shades in the sunscreens would perform as concealer, with your lighter foundation on top.

I just recently found out that Avene still test one of their products on animals. That is the reason I'm not going to order the sunscreen you recommend It's a pity because it sounds like a great sunscreen.

So that sunscreen is way too tinted for my skin tone. I feel more motivated to just pass on sunscreen completely. Thank you for this information.

Thank you, very informative as always. But I have always had problems with tinted suncreens as they color my shirts, undershirts and sweaters. And it does not come out by washing (laundry). Any thoughts, insights on that ? Thank you

I found that just treating the stained area with plain old soap (not "beauty bar", look for ingredient list that has "sodium ____ate", such as sodium cocoate) works really well. My tinted sunscreen and makeup always make a mess on my masks and hand-washing them with soap removes stains that do not come out with Shout, OxyClean and the like.

Hello. I was just wondering which of these sunscreen would work well for my extremely dry skin? I find that most mineral sunscreens are too drying for my skin. Thanks for your knowledge and skin care tips.

Yes!! The Avene one in this video is much darker. And the compact comes in 2 shade options. However, if these are still not a good match, go for a product like Ilia that has a lot of shade options. Or…put a foundation over your sunscreen to get your layer of iron oxides that way. Lots of options but my point with this video is to make sure your apply a layer of iron oxides either in sunscreen or a makeup!!

Yes on the Ilia but I'd also check out channels that focus on deeper skin tones like Dr Alexis Stephens and The Style and Beauty Doctor or even cosmetic chemist April Basi.

Thanks for your video. What do you think of Eucerin sunscreens as they do clinical studies on their sunscreens and focus on ingredients that also protect against HEVIS (including visible light). I've reviewed 3 sunscreens from Eucerin and they all protect against visible light (as well as UV) and the free radicals caused as a result.

It was difficult to finde a good sunscreen for me. All chemical sunscreens irritated my eyes,so I bought mineral sunscreen, which was a fail, it's a good brand, but had so white cast, I have very light skin, whit that I looked so bad, like dead... Anyway I bought Australian gold botanical tinted mineral sunscreen and that's the best. I use first korean mineral sunscreen and after the tinted one. But this tinted sunscreen I can use just by itself and still looks good, even though you have to use much. I don't reapply the sunscreen, I'm working all day, in a fabric where is not necessary, i think. 🤔

This was a great explanation of sun radiation vs sunscreen. Thank you so much! Could you comment about nano vs non-nano size active ingredients in sunscreen? Are nano-size ingredients allowed in the US? Is the zinc oxide in Avene nano or non-nano size? I did not find this information on their website. It would be interesting to hear what the scientific research says about this subject.
