This is the first time in my life I actually subscribed to the channel just from the first video. It'll be hard to write these thoughts down in English, since my native is Russian, but I'll try. Never have I ever met someone who is so based in the topic of discussion, and yet simplifies all the information this nicely. Nothing missed, no distortion of information, - just the pure concept and it's mechanics. I'm not sure how YT got to know that I needed this video. The thing is, that I recently got a DAC (SB AE-5) and got pretty disappointed. It's not that it's bad, it's just when I connect my Alpha S or Moondrop Arias to the DAC and then to my phone, the difference is so minimal. And between my AlphaSs, Arias, TWS5s and other headphones (yeah, I don't have nothing too expensive, but I still believe I can enjoy the clear sound even withing the range of 70-150$). And the thing is, that the difference is indeed minimal. I've had some clearly terrible headphones of course, but when you're getting something decent above the price mark of 60-70$, I feel like it's all +- the same, and I feel kinda scammed, not gonna lie. Because all the audiotech reviewers were like "OH YOU WANNA RELISTEN TO ALL YOUR ALBUMS AGAIN, "OH THE MUSIC IN THIS IS SO GOOD YOU WANNA DANCE TO IT". Literally. I'm quoting. The other guy was "FIRST I WAS LISTENING. THEN I WAS SCREAMING HOW GOOD IT WAS. THEN I REPEATED." Like, ffs, what the hell are you all talking about? Yeah, there is a difference, but how come EVERYBODY can hear it, and I don't? And here I find this video where you PERFECTLY summarized and showed what my problem was. I knew myself that the "audial revolution" I'm chasing is too idealistic to exist, but I never got to the idea that it's an addiction, and has to be treated like one: with ascetism. Thanks, man. You have no clue how much you helped me. Thanks for the amazing content. Keep it up.

I own a pair of starfields. Great point! If you have the space, a suggestion I would pass along is to have a few different setups around the house. In my house I have a 5.1 setup in the living room, 2.1 channel audio in my basement game room, 2 channel audio in my gym area, 2 channel audio in my workshop, then a headphone setup in my office. After writing this I realize this makes it sound like I live in a mansion, but I definitely do not. My house is 1400 square feet with an unfinished basement and nothing that I own would be considered high end. It's all just nice equipment I've collected over the many years I've been in the hobby. Having different areas of the house to experience music in different ways keeps it fun. It's amazing how well older equipment holds up if you spread out your listening. Very fun to revisit that stuff. I'll also say though that if you do this and are still disappointed with a particular piece of gear, sell it or trade it for something worth while. No use in hoarding things that don't make you happy.

Being into cars, it's the same concept. I know plenty of people who have multiple fun cars with different characteristics, and it's definitely amplified with them. You can own a GT3 RS PDK that is perfectly refined in every way and, short of a pro racer, you'll probably never be able to fully appreciate its full potential. But then you get into your 67' Giulia and push it as hard as you can without even breaking the road laws and it's so much fun, because you're using all of it, and there's ample theatre. You might appreciate your well-rounded 'end game' headphones but find that going back to a cheaper headphone with character, elates you because they're.. just fun!

People don't realize on how on even the most simplest thing that this applies. A perfect example is when you get into a car you have never driven before. You might find yourself struggling to break, maybe it seems like a light tap feels like you are standing on the breaks. Turn around and get into your car and it feels like you have slam your foot down to get it to stop. It's because as you get used to it your mind does exactly this and you press the the brakes in a manner to get the feeling your brain thinks you should have when you get used to it. Eventually that other car is going to feel like the breaks are worn in and normal. The breaks aren't wearing in. You are. To a degree I think this is what actually happens with "smart transmissions" they aren't learning your habits. You are learning its and driving more efficiently (even if it's to avoid jerky gearshifts).

yeah i'm not owning anything nearly high-end, but i'm perfectly fine with my personal end-game set with my MK3 Argon mod, mostly because i'm not using them as much as my other headphones. I really don't feel like I need a headphone upgrade, and it's been so for a couple of years now i'm more comfortable now that i've found my equilibrium than when I still was yearning for my next new pair

My collection is HD600, HE4XX, HE400se, DT 770 Pro. I swap between each one ever few days. But those HD600's are so good.

I have actually been daily driving a pair of ksn10 pros for almost two weeks now, running them both on balanced and with KZ's pro bt adapter, and I am having the time of my life. Now every time I pick up my HD660S they feel as good as the first time I tried them on rofl

Spot on. I wish I could just buy a TOTL headphone, however I doubt that will ever be the case. Always looking for that bit more or better.

Which is why I stick to the mid-fi and below high cost to performance pairs like: IEM: Blon bl o5s or IKKO OH10 HP: Koss kph30i, Sivga SV21, Zeus Even if I would want to upgrade, I would first set a price limit. After making up my mind, I'll make sure that a lot of reviewers like the pair. And finally, I'll wait for a sale. Here are the prices I bought these pairs for in order: 30$ (with a tripowin upgrade cable), 120$ 30$ (with big grado like pads),116$, 320$ And I actually like all of them for different uses and not crazy expensive with no actual need to buy better gear (got ZEN DAC & CAN).

Great video! I completely agree with you. I want to buy a second pair of headphones myself and just change them from time to time.

As someone who's quite new to this hobby and unfortunately doesn't really have as much expendable income to be shelling out hundreds for just 1 pair of headphones this video is reassuring. It's nice to know that I can probably spend a little on multiple cheaper pairs of headphones and be able to cycle through them to get that excitement without breaking the bank and falling down the rabbit hole of chasing the next best thing. Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to spend $400+ for a new pair of headphones but that's just not a reality I live in right now.

No. You have cut the stimulation for a while. Because it's not just sound, you also loose the emotional reaction to music if you listen too often. When you are starting to feel dissatisfied You need to give yourself a break from audio and music for a good while... The longer the better. And when you return to it, you will hear it for what it truly is.

Haven’t gotten a bunch of headphones..the 650’s still surprise me and put a smile on my face. That being said..I’m now up to several sets of IEM’s..and I’m finding that I appreciate the 650’s ..but I’m able to explore other sonic signatures with IEM’s for a fraction of the price of newer headphones. Cheers 🍻

I have this in a very toned down way. I just got some Meze 99 Classics, and I'm loving them, but since they're the only wired headphones I have, they run my desk exclusively. I also have Sony WH1000XM4s I use when I'm out and about, and some Jabra Elite 75ts that I use for workouts and other general listening. This allows me a fairly large variety of options, but really lets me appreciate the magic in my Classics when I sit down at my desk and enjoy some music.

Huge generalisations follow but … I think this is the difference between how men approach audio and how women approach audio. For me, having Roon and the ability to constantly discover new music completely satisfies this side of things for me. I’ve worked to put together a great mid-fi setup that brings the best out in the music, and all the different listening modes I need. Equipment isn’t my focus, music is. It’s like road trips, men focus on the vehicle women on what the scenery will be along the route. As I said, huge generalisations, but I think there’s something in it.

I'd love if you could make a video about your dt 880 600 ohms (with banana plugs) and what speaker amp you use them with. Most speaker amps have a high ish noise floor for headphones so I'd like to know your recommendations on speaker amps to drive them and how is the soundstage and dynamics?

You pretty much just explained why beyond a point (that varies for all of us), money is a diminishing return, ie 'doesn't make you happy'. The brain is exactly the same whether you're swapping out hamburger joints, headphones or hypercars. EVERY level becomes our 'normal' and we always eventually want 'fresh', be it to swap or level up. I guess that's why billionaires head for the stars 😁

My endgame journey: V-Moda M100, Oppo PM3, B&W P5, B&W P7, HD650, HD6XX, HD58X, Focal Elex, HiFiMan Arya, HiFiMan Ananda, Focal Clear, HD800, Arya, Clear, Sundara, Elex, Sundara. Countless amps and DACs taking a loss on each sale. Ended up with a iFi Zen DAC V2 and Sundara. I went full circle and couldn’t be happier. This hobby truly is rife with diminishing returns, hype, subjective interpretation of objective measurements, etc, etc. Find what you like and continue liking it!

Great video man and applicable to a lot of things. I've just taken a step into the mid-fi realm, buying the HD560s and a pair of Final A4000 IEMS. My hope was to just cycle them out when I feel like it, so awesome to hear that's a thing you recommend. All the best with the channel man, liked and subscribed.

DMS speaks the truth. But some headphones are just better than others. I used to love my Philips Fidelio X3, but since I have upgraded to a pair of Focal Elegia, the X3 sounds muddy, veiled, joyless. And this is after 24 hours of not listening the Focal to reset my hearing as told in the video. Of course, DMS hated the X3 and I thought he was crazy, because back then they were the best cans I had, but now I know that upgrading in audio is a very real thing. Same goes for DACs and amps

must own several phones because first your brain gets used to sound but also to the novelty of a new headphone and that excitement does affect perception of sound as well.. i usually have a dca closed back for its comfort and dead sound, then when i feel like actually listening to music i switch to a different one (usually a fostex biodyna or lcd-2 with zmf auteur suede pads)

Buy a good EQ and amp before buying new headphones. Learn what you like. My setup is source through eq into pre amp with tone controls and final amp. Then i fine tune with tone controls as i switch from headphone to headphone. Most of my headphones work well with my custom eq setting.

How about you set goals? This usually happened if we don't plan out a goal that we need to achieve. There are so much more to fulfil aside from a good set of headphones. And filling everything up makes it feel like a level up. Until you have achieve everything you pictured out in the very place, I think setting up a goal would be a good choice, specially for the ones with limited budget.

I never went for "upgrades". I had specific ideas and uses in mind for the gear I've bought. It's kind of why I stopped EQ'ing, and instead I've just purchased different headphones with different tunings and different strong points. I love the variety, and didn't see the point in EQ'ing all my headphones to have a very similar FR. Now I just enjoy the headphones as they are. It's like eating a different flavor of ice cream.

I have just 1 set of nice cans, and one set of speakers. I have used them for over a year, and have gotten so used to them. I found my personal endgame. My father bought some really nice new speakers, and it made me think about audio for the first time in a long long time. Recently bought a new set of cans. Maybe I will find my new endgame. Maybe I will find something new in my old pair that I missed. I guess I will see.
