The procedure for issuing electronic visas has been approved by the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, dated 7 November 2020 № 1793. This procedure applies for citizens of 52 states. At the moment, the UK is not included in this list.
Applications for e-visas can be submitted on a special website of the Foreign Ministry or via a mobile application both will be operational later. They will be issued to foreign nationals for tourism, business, private visits or humanitarian purposes without the need of any invitations, hotel bookings or any other documents to confirm their reasons for travel. Applicants will only need to fill out a special form, upload a personal digital image and a copy of the passport, pay a consular fee on the website/application (free for children aged under six) and wait for notification.
After the application is registered an identification number will be assigned. The date and time of its submission is the date and time of sending the completed application for processing.
Notifications about the progress and result of the processing of the application are sent to the foreign citizen by e-mail, indicated as the account name during registration. You must have a printout of such notification to travel to Russia.
The application is processed by the Russian Foreign Ministry automatically. The processing procedure will take up to four days. If incorrect information is found, its processing will be suspended and it will be returned to the applicant for correction. In this case, only the date of sending the amended application will be considered as the date of filing the application. Foreign nationals are personally responsible for the process of obtaining this type of visa and for the provided information. You should take this into account when planning your trip.
Please, note that the final decision to let you enter the Russian Federation is made by the Border Service of Russia, which, like the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, is allowed to cancel the e-visa in cases, provided by Russian law. At the same time, no one has to explain the reasons for canceling the e-visa.
