Evaluate a prolonged aPTT with an aPTT mixing study to clarify whether there is a deficiency or an inhibitor of an intrinsic pathway factor. If the patient is not on heparin, an isolated prolonged aPTT with bleeding may be due to a deficiency/inhibitor of factors VIII, IX, or XI. If not associated with bleeding, the prolonged aPTT may be due to a lupus anticoagulant or a deficiency/inhibitor of factor XII, high molecular weight kininogen, or prekalikrein.
