Yeah, she read the script and literally told Jodorowsky "I need to be in movies people want to watch. Who the hell is going to want to watch this?" Keep in mind she had just done Zardoz, another notoriously strange film clearly developed under the influence of drugs and admitted she only said yes to it because she got to do a sex scene with Sean Connery, and Zardoz was considered a huge embarrassment for practically everyone involved, so she probably wasn't interested in doing another psychedelic sci-fi movie by a director higher than a kite.

I want this to be made into an animated series maybe for a streaming platform like HBO Max / Disney+... with a really big budget (probably +300 millions in total) and a unique artistic style in the same way Jodorosky, Giger, Foss and Moebius pictured it, live action landscapes, miniatures, buildings, animatronics and practical effects, slow-motion, motion capture, stylized 2D hand-painted/hand-traced traditional animation and extremely expensive and overworked CGI animation that would look like something from an alien's dream in a different time period. The characters would have the faces, acting, manners and (similar) voices of his cast choices, Dalí's Emperor would be the most expensive character ever to be animated, as he will combine all the existing filming and animating techniques in each frame he would appear, and his outfits would be made of real gold, diamonds and precious gems, so it would fulfil Dalí's eccentric demands back in the day. The score and Gurney's songs would be made by Pink Floyd too, and everything would look and sound like it has been created in another planet by aliens. It would be filmed/photographed in 70mm IMAX film and then scanned in 18K for post-production, some parts would be filmed in VHS tapes for artistic/stylistic reasons, and all the audio would be mastered on tape, the old-school way and then digitized and mastered in Dolby Atmos. Some sound parts would be mastered in cassette tapes and vinyl records with noise and cracks for artistic/stylistic reasons. The experience would be weird and hunting but also beautiful, artistic, alluring and hallucinogenic like LSD, as Jodorosky intended.

Here's one fact I love about Jodorowsky and one that speaks volumes of him, he wrote the introduction for the fourth volume of the comic book series Usagi Yojimbo and he was the only one of the dozens of introduction writers who ever got a caption to explain who he was. This was because the publisher felt Jodorowsky's introduction was utterly crazy, spending most of it spewing hatred for Walt Disney (Jodorowsky seems to be under the impression that Disney himself created the concept of anthropomorphized animals and apparently thinks Porky Pig is a Disney character) and admitting to burning Disney comics and toys when he was a child. The editors quickly realized that because Jodorowsky was almost totally unknown outside of Euro-comic circles and very obscure midnight movies, readers would probably think they had let some random psychopath write the book's introduction.

Thanks for the cliff notes version of this film project/script. I now understand why it never got made. Americans don't go to the movies to feel like crap. You don't kill off hero in the last act. Even with all the wild departures from the book, the obsession with anal/scat imagery, the 10 to 13 hour run time( parts one, two, three???) the finale and largest nail in the coffin was killing off of Paul(the hero) in the final scene. Nope, that dog just wont hunt. I'm very happy that this project became the fertilizer for other films to blossom.

I knew the 84 version was bad, but I didn't realize there could have been an even worse version. You could probably take some of these bizarre ideas and make a completely unrelated film

I would love to see Jodorowsky’s version, and I assume it will be made eventually. However on watching this video, I'm thinking that might best be done by animating the whole movie directly from the storyboard. However it is done, I hope it is done as faithfully as possible. Even still, I expect I won't even like the result, but I still very much want to see it.

I only speak for myself. I want to see this more than almost anything that was rumored to be made or scrapped. I totally get why some would hate this. But for those who arent super into Dune to begin with, and dont hold it so sacred would love to see this interpretation.

Your last sentence is why it shouldn’t be made. Make a new IP. Don’t salt the earth of a beloved one. This is worse than all the reimagining live action Disney movies. At least there is some faithfulness to the source material on those.

14 hours?? Man, I think 90 minutes is too long lol. I think it's better that it never did get released. But it would have made a cool animated series.

Psychedelic nah that would have been insanity regardless of the time. Having 2000 men defecate themselves is one thing but just unnecessary necrophilia half-way through the movie, what point does that serve, who's character is driven by that? I'm glad arthouse films have dragged themselves back from this much of a bleeding edge.

The same people going about what a crime it is that the movie was never made are the same that would now be disapointed with the movie. (Judging only by how their fx would look now and the scope of the project) People were true to the novel back then and actually seing what they read was the thing to make'em tick. Making jodo's film was unsustainable and would have been a disaster by the whims of all the excentrics hired on the set in key roles. It would have been hilarious to see Dali as the emperor. It seems to me that jodo was kind of mocking hard on herbert's novel.

Conceptually, it has the potential for brillance but could easily have turned out grotesque like Lynch's version of the Harkonnen. It has the feel of a number of experimental movies of the early 70s, heavy on concepts and awkward in execution.

I’m glad it didn’t get made. In "Jodorowsky's Dune" all he did was talk about how far he wanted to veer away from the book. And many of those changes don't even make any sense in the context of his own changes. Like at 7:34 - 8:11 why would Lady Jessica rearrange Duke Leto's limbs back together and attempt having sex with his corpse, when way earlier Alejandro showed us that Duke Leto was castrated? All she had to do is the same thing she did to conceive Paul, and use only one drop of Duke Leto's blood. And the ending is infinitely WORSE than the ending in the David Lynch film. A planet that goes out to enlighten other planets? I also imagine that he didn't even factor the Spice all that much in the story either, because even in the documentary Spice is barely even mentioned at all. What does any of this have to do with “Dune?” Also considering the state of special effects back then, the majority of the effects would’ve been impossible or looked downright horrible. It would’ve been a horrible “Dune” adaptation. But instead we now have a bunch of great films in Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune's absence. Plus we got Jodorowsky’s fantastic "The Incal" and "Metabarons," effectively already getting HIS vision of "Dune" out there after all. I prefer it this way.

From my knowledge of his works he like to make analogy from religion and mythology. The castration was probably to draw comparison to Jesus (The messiah/Savior) Miraculous virgin birth and the rebuilding of the body could be analogy of Isis and Osiris body leading to the birth of Horus. Also yeah atleast we got his Inca and Metabarons series. Also RIP Metabaron arist Juan Giménez.

I feel like realistically they would have needed someone who could get through to the director the need to cut out some of the crazy and length of his proposal. The casting and design work is interesting enough, that a maybe 3 hour version of this could have been a modest cult success with the more adventurous film goinv audience or the 70s.

Greatest movie because never made. Let's face it. Jodorovski is a loon enjoying making movies and not having them made. He loves the process, the flow, not the structure. It was all a fantasy, would never have worked, the whole charm and myth of it is the idea of the potential it would never have reached.
