Authoritarian leaders don’t just take power; it’s often handed to them willingly. In fact, the very mechanisms our brains use to protect us can lead us down a path to oppression. In this talk, London Burnham describes the warning signs found in a rising authoritarian regime and the role that psychology plays in our susceptibility. London Burnham is a Senior at Durham Academy where she plays Field Hockey, competes in Science Olympiad, and sings in XIV Hours acapella group. She loves ice skating, heist movies, and her dogs. Although London enjoys many subjects, she is fascinated by the intersection of Psychology and Political Science. She's spent the past year studying the Psychology of Power, with a specific focus on the psychological dynamics that allow oppressive leaders to hold power over those they oppress. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
