Pubs are a distinctive British institution. What makes a good pub and what distinguishes it from its continental European counterpart is difficult to describe. But you immediately recognize a pub when entering: In the pub you do not only drink, in the pub, you meet, discuss, watch TV, and in recent times you can even eat well in many pubs.
The love of the British to the pub is also a history of their love for beer. The first pubs were built where good beer was brewed. In the Middle Ages this were the monasteries. In the time of industrialization, more and more British drowned their misery in alcohol. The popularity of the pubs led to the development of the abstinence movement and the overthrow of a British government.
