Good reminder. There was a relevant quote from the book art & fear that became very popular for a while. "The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot-albeit a perfect one-to get an “A”. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work-and learning from their mistakes-the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay."

I have watched many painting tutorials using many mediums to try to find my style and what medium is for me, I have learned a lot, however, I have learned more about myself watching your videos than any other and that's without you picking up a brush or pallet knife. Having said that, if you came to the UK, I would sign up to your workshop in a heartbeat, you are an excellent teacher. I now comit to one painting a week at the very least, I procrastinate way to much for fear of screwing up, it's only paint and canvas right ☺ just paint, paint and paint somemore 😆 Thank again Stefan.

+Jooles Smith I would love to conduct a workshop in the UK and do that in a heart beet. As for coaching I do offer that also. If you know of any venue for a workshop please let me know via my email address, Thanks for the kind works and keep on painting.

"Paint more Strikes". I need to hang that quote in the studio and look at it daily. We're glad to have someone as caring and genuine as yourself Stefan. I've benefitted immensely from your talks and positive influence on getting things done and changing the mindset of the artist.

+RedSoxKal Thanks for the giving me the thumbs up and inspiring me to do more with KZitem and in my one art! Its the feedback and knowing that I make a difference that make me work harder to bring more insight into the mind of being an artist. Thanks

Thanks again. I started painting for 15 years ago, no skills and with cheap oil paint & material. After some time i'd create some nice works and the feedback from people around was very positive. Everything was just fine, until i knew that,- I want to be an artist, so i started study art history, technics etc, and after some time, there were no doubt, - This is it ! After that,- my painting (in oil acrylic, watercolor, pastel etc) has become a "Pain thing" ! My pursuit for perfection and anxiety for making mistakes, killed the best part of me being a painter, - the flow and joy. ;-)

Wow, yes! Poignant and spot on. I had been struggling with a painting for months and then I had an 'aha' moment which whispered to me 'Just PAINT! Stop trying to make it BE something, just paint!' So I did, I flowed with the energy and I finished it in the next 2 hours and LOVE it. Great lecture! Thank you.

Great video! I've listened to all of Stefan's videos, and now I'm listening to them again after over a year of coaching, and I'm learning things I missed the first or second time around. I quit watching "how to paint" videos shortly after starting coaching with Stefan. Now, when I watch videos, I watch lectures and documentaries about art history. They don't tell me how to paint, but teach the progression of the craft over the centuries. I've learned about the different movements, styles, discoveries and cultural influences. I get a lot of great information and inspiration from them. I've managed to find a balance. Rule #1, do whatever Stefan says. I labor for perfection on some paintings until I'm sick of working on them or I'm happy with them. But, I also keep working on new paintings. So far, working with Stefan, my favorite painting is almost always the most recent one. Sometimes, I bite off more than I can chew and do something really mediocre, but I learn a lot in the process and the next one is better. And, "more than I can chew" keeps getting bigger and more complex. Thanks for everything Stefan!!!

Besides the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper immediately came to mind. I was in Milan last May and saw it up close and personal. I have to tell you, there are many reproductions including in the museum of science and technology in Milan, which I saw earlier in the day, but they don't capture the magnificence of the real thing. Even in its deteriorated state there is a feeling of depth that can't be appreciated in the reproductions. I kept staring at it trying to determine if the wall was flat or if it actually receded. Of course it's flat but it appears totally three dimensional. DaVinci's ability to create vanishing point is remarkable.

+Gary Perazzo, that's great that you got to see it. When my husband and I went to Milan, we forgot to book two weeks in advance. They wouldn't let us in. other tourists were making a scene but we knew that we made the mistake. We saw the reproduction in the other room, bought the postcard and then headed to the Duomo. At least we got to see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris. Not like the Last Supper, I imagine, small but amazing.

Like so many of your videos, you took a topic that could be difficult for artists facing the paralysis to hear. I've been very much included in this group for a couple years. I feel inspired to meet the challenge of simply making art for art's sake, and trust that the masterpieces will eventually emerge. Thank you, Stefan. Out of curiosity, I searched about Van Gogh. According to Wikipedia he died at age 37. In just over a decade of painting, he produced more than 2,100 artworks.

Permission to "not be perfect"... Wow! Thank you. I don't paint because I am afraid of "messing up". I have several great paintings started but they are not finished because I am afraid. I am going this weekend to buy a bunch of canvases and begin to paint as many as I can - not worrying if they are perfect. What do you recommend for practicing? Thank you so much for this video and for the freedom it has released in me.

+Stefan Baumann. Now that I caught the "Screlt" misspelling, another one just popped out at me in another of your videos from about 2 mo ago: in "Plein Air Starting a painting how to Draw and execute your idea in the first ten minutes", at 00:39 the word "Drawing" is misspelled as "Draiwng" in the subtitle "Plein Air Painting - How to Excecute The Draiwng. Capturing Your Idea On Canvas." Not a big deal, but I thought you'd like to know. And thanks for your great videos! I really appreciate and benefit from them. Especially this one on perfection!

Poor ole Van Gogh was just trying to get recognition because he was a great drawing artist trying to be a painter. Hence his black outlined drawings, filled with color. Huge difference between adding darks on a light surface than adding lights on a dark surface. For some of us, that's frustrating.
