Fun fact: Beth's outfit at the end is meant to invoke the white queen piece, her hat especially.

A minor point, but beating Borgov in one game at the Moscow Invitational, doesn't make her World Champion. To do that, she would have to finish top-3 at the 1969 US Championship, then finish top-6 at the 24-player Interzonal tournament in 1970, then win all three best-of-10-game contests in the 8-player Candidates elimination tournament in 1971, before facing Borgov in a best of 24 game match in 1972 for the title.

The book was written by the guy who wrote "The Hustler" that was made into the Paul Newman movie - also about someone skilled in a basic game that can get complex. I need to watch it again but I think a lot of the characters are based on chess pieces. She is definitely the queen (especially at the end with that hat making her look like the chess piece) and Borgov is the king. Her teacher with the cane can only move in a certain direction. Jolene is probably the knight. And a lot of the men are pawns. Her Mum is a piece taken early. Shaibel might be the castle - stuck in his corner. As I say, my theory needs further work.

Benny, with his cowboy hat and the unorthodox way he moves and acts, is probably a knight as well.

To add to the adjournment discussion, a player could only ask for an adjournment after 40 moves had made by each player. The time control at major tournaments was usually 40 moves in 2.5 hours. When the rules changed to eliminate adjournments the timing rules were also changed.

According to a chess coach, there's no adjournment any more. You have to finish your match the same day. Also btw, fellow MHA fan here if I'm not mistaken =)

My guess is people don't adjourn anymore because of computer programs can aid a player too well; in that day, super computers were not that accessible.

The comedic banter back and forth was funny. Unlike a few other reactions that were filled with feminist, men suck type comments, you guys took it in stride, understanding that this is a period piece. Things are not like that now. There were multiple times I spit out my drink with your "There you go, Beth. Get those pills" type comments.

good reactions. games in show can be followed in detail . chess channels have been analyzing the games . chess is doing well even before the show though show was a great boost. argument that chess will become obsolete due to computer is like saying sprinting or marathons will become obsolete due to say people racing motorbikes. adjournment became a problem( and was abolished ) only when computers can be used for analysis. otherwise playing best human moves possible, without obvious blunders( which is what overnight help from others provides ) is not a bad thing . also limiting games to hard time limits , as they are now , creates its own problems, since its possible for a player worse off on board, to win through clock alone. and probably leads to greater number of draws.
