Can I just say that I think that as a result of Diana's death, A LOT of things changed in the royal family. I think the queen took a step back and saw the errors of making Charles and Diana marry. The relationship was miserable and so were they. She didn't want to see the same thing happen to Willaim, Harry or any of her other grandchildren. I think that's why she let Diana's boys be more free to date and marry someone they loved instead of following routine and traditional expectations. Diana's death was tragic, but I think it made the Queen and monarchy change for the better

@𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖑 OK I see where this is coming from. You watched The Crown and take that highly fictionalised story for granted. But in fact, it's a far cry from reality. Here are some facts: 1. The Villa Windsor in Paris was never in possession of the Fayed family or, for that matter, of the British Crown. It has been owned by the City of Paris and leased by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, then Mohamed (and not Dodi) Al-Fayed. So it was not his to offer it to the Queen in the first place. 2. The belongings of the Windsors left in the villa were indeed bought by Al-Fayed (again, the father!), but not a single item was offered to the Royal Family as a gift - nor was it taken back from the Villa by them as depicted in the film. They were auctioned off at Sotheby's a few months after Diana and Dodi's fatal accident. Though the bidders remained anonymous, it is believed that the most important items were actually purchased back by the Royal Family. But most importantly, this happens months after the Queen's Diana speech. 3. This is not a news anchor reading an obituary. It's the Queen paying respect, if reluctantly, to the late mother of her grandchildren. It's about Diana and Diana only.

Or slap Charles on the hand when Charles has has a lifetime of showing he will do/say what he wants to despite what others think, she could hardly have him executed or exiled to the tower, be realistic. The Queen was a badass, she was one of the few leaders in modern society who actually led by example or are you going to discount her service during WW2? Or how she came into the role despite the fact she and her father never even expected to be put into that position, and not only flourished but brought the monarchy into something modern, especially in an unreservedly mans world in the 50's. Keep your hot takes to yourself when presented with facts. Edit: It is well documented and vetted the Queen was firmly on Diana's side until she started airing the laundry, the Queen who in her entire life bowed to no one bowed to Diana at her funeral. I'm also sure she rethought some things when it was discovered Diana was manipulated quite a bit to air that laundry.

The most dramatic moment of the Queen’s reign. You can see she had her back to the window in this speech and the crowd outside the Palace looked menacing. She was basically saying sorry for how Diana was treated, but you could tell in her eyes that she was annoyed to be put into the position she was in that week, what with the flag etc. A stark contrast to her son King Charles 25 years later, when he paid tribute to his mother. He of course paid tribute to Diana as well as the late Queen, when he said “May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest” as those words were sung when his ex wife was carried out of the Abbey on the day of her funeral. The Queen saved not just her own skin in this speech, but probably her son’s too.

You are both foolish. Elizabeth broke protocols for Diana's death in order to properly express the volume of her respect to the late Princess. Do you even acknowledge that? No, you point the finger at her majesty and blame her for a tragedy she did not cause. You do this instead of acknowledging that the ones to blame for her premature passing are the public- because we idolised and worshipped Diana to a point where she wasn't treated as human, where her health and very life was put second to bombardments of exlcusive photographs from the Paparazzi that were prioritised. If we hadn't been so obsessed with her, they wouldn't have been.

My gut feeling 25 years ago about this speech was that she didn't care about Diana back then and doesn't care one bit about her subjects grieving either. This speech felt like she was forced to swallow a big pill on account of her grandchildren's grief. None of that gut feeling has changed in the intervening 25 years to her death in September 2022.

I honestly think she was incredibly angry with Diana for having been so careless with her own safety. The Queen DID very much love her grandchildren and the feeling was mutual. Witnessing their pain as she and her husband attempted to console them probably just made her more frustrated and mad. I'm still pissed at Diana too, for not putting on her damned seatbelt, for not thinking of her kids and refusing to waste her time with a stupid playboy who literally put her life at risk and got her killed. Yes, the Queen pretty much had to make this little speech because her subjects were not just sad but also very pissed off about how Diana had been treated for so long. But I think she was genuinely upset; it was just more for her son and grandchildren than for Diana, and in context, I can't blame her.

"Since last Sunday's dreadful news we have seen, throughout Britain and around the world, an overwhelming expression of sadness at Diana's death. "We have all been trying in our different ways to cope. It is not easy to express a sense of loss, since the initial shock is often succeeded by a mixture of other feelings: disbelief, incomprehension, anger - and concern for those who remain. "We have all felt those emotions in these last few days. So what I say to you now, as your Queen and as a grandmother, I say from my heart. "First, I want to pay tribute to Diana myself. She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. "I admired and respected her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys. "This week at Balmoral, we have all been trying to help William and Harry come to terms with the devastating loss that they and the rest of us have suffered. "No-one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. "I for one believe that there are lessons to be drawn from her life and from the extraordinary and moving reaction to her death. "I share in your determination to cherish her memory. "This is also an opportunity for me, on behalf of my family, and especially Prince Charles and William and Harry, to thank all of you who have brought flowers, sent messages, and paid your respects in so many ways to a remarkable person. "These acts of kindness have been a huge source of help and comfort. "Our thoughts are also with Diana's family and the families of those who died with her. I know that they too have drawn strength from what has happened since last weekend, as they seek to heal their sorrow and then to face the future without a loved one. "I hope that tomorrow we can all, wherever we are, join in expressing our grief at Diana's loss, and gratitude for her all-too-short life. "It is a chance to show to the whole world the British nation united in grief and respect. "May those who died rest in peace and may we, each and every one of us, thank God for someone who made many, many people happy

People still don't understand what The Queen was all about. She wasn't, nor was she supposed to be, some kind of figure to come out with an emotional speech. Everything she said in public, like Christmas speeches, took months of careful planning in order to address the country in just the right way. She was a stoic and level-headed figure, and people look at that as uncaring and cold.
