Commentary on Chapter 5 - The Table (Al-Ma’idah):
(Verses 51 & 57)
During the time of the Prophet, some non-Muslims declared war on the Muslims because Islam challenged several of their social practices, such as female infanticide, social inequality, slavery, the rights of women, and idolatry.
As the oppression and persecution of Muslims intensified, leaving them no choice but to defend themselves, God revealed specific directives for Muslim soldiers. These verses were meant for that particular wartime situation and should not be misconstrued as a general command to fight non-Muslims.
In the contemporary setting, these verses are akin to soldiers on a batter field receiving orders from high command-if they encounter an enemy during the conflict, they were to engage and eliminate them. However, once the war ends, these instructions no longer apply.
