On December 16, 1989, Portland Trail Blazers rookie Ramón Ramos was driving at a high speed on I-5 south of Portland when his Nissan 300ZX hit a patch of ice, sending his car into the median where it rolled over eight times and ejected Ramos from the vehicle.
The subsequent head injury (alongside fluid in his lungs and fractures to his ribs and scapula) left Ramos in a coma for three months. Paralyzed from the waist down for a year following the accident, Ramos' NBA career ended before it began with his brain injury necessitating lifelong aide and supervision from his parents.
This 1990 feature aired at halftime of Game 5 of the 1990 NBA Finals between the Portland Trail Blazers and Detroit Pistons.
