i think with the sticky det they were trying to evolve its raw power and player triggered detonation, while getting rid of the EMP and impact damage aspects, making it more of a projectile land mine you can stick to players and vehicles, but loosing its versatility. I hope they add the reach GL to infinite, though I can understand leaving it out of the flights, its not a load out weapon, BR or the SPNKR which were basically required inclusions for base testing, SPNKR to confirm its more realistic looking H5 counterpart isn't returning, and the flights have to focus on balancing the new weapons, with the GL, its already so unique and suitably tier 2 that it doesn't need the attention the new weapons or returning power weapons do, any adjustments would be minor.

Fun fact: Reach was a testing ground for Destiny and this type of grenade launcher was supposed to be on Destiny 1, but had to be cut due to balancing concerns at the time.

Honestly my favourite weapon. Feels really similar to Demoman from TF2 (except it's necessary to bounce your shots of the ground more often than not) with added EMP utility. Although people get really caught up with the alt-fire and wonder why it barely does any damage, then completely write it off

You hit the nail on the head as to why I loved the grenade launcher. It was "a rocket for the thinking spartan." As far as the sticky detonator, I think they decided to trade utility and flexibility for ease of use. The reach GL had the ability to reliably duel both Spartans and vehicles if you had the skills, lay traps, as well as function as a counter camper weapon. (The elevator on sword base comes to mind) The sticky detonator appears to have a wider kill radius in exchange for no EMP or bounce, and a sticking projectile means you have more control over it during a duel, which makes it slightly less chaotic, but also makes for a less interesting weapon.

I’m surprised the RGL isn’t in Infinite, even though Infinite’s sandbox is so functionality-based. I’m pretty sure with the sticky det 343 was trying to ensure ease of use. Instead of having to time the detonation and hold the trigger, you manually detonate once you know the projectile has fastened itself to whatever surface or person you shot it at. It’s also easier to set traps with thanks to the built in motion sensor; otherwise it’s kind of just a hand-fired manually detonated spike grenade. I love the stickydet but I understand why it didn’t return.

I actually thought the GL evolved (or rather was broken) into 2 weapons, the Sticky Detonator and the Hydra, aiming to have more control over the explosive and bringing more 'diversity' to the sandbox, having the Hydra aimed for vehicles and larger fights and the SD for more tactical encounters and smaller, controled spaces.

The Halo Reach UNSC GL's multi functional usage is realized again in Destiny's Blinding Grenade Breach Loaders. The functionality is almost identical and just as fun to use.

Personally, a weapon combining the Sticky Detonator and the Reach Nade Launcher is my #1 hope for a future weapon to be added in Infinite - with how well other weapons have been turning out in Infinite, I really think 343i could make something special out of these two gems. Also I just wanted to say that I'm relatively new to your channel Ascend and I think you make some great content. Very objective, well-thought out analysis and discussion - keep it up!

I think 343 tried to deliver something like the trip mines or satchel charges from Half-Life 1 whit the sticky detonator, a weapon for traps and or area denial wich the granade launcher could do but not as easily due to the bouncy projectile vs the sticky granade that sticks to all sufaces, players and even vehicles (and i think other weapons as well).

As a kid, Halo's grenade launchers were very difficult to get used to, especially on controller. My guess is Halo 4 was really trying to streamline the concept.

With the sticky detonator 343 tried to achieve a sort of C4 in halo. Acting as more of a land mind controlled by the player. But because of the time limit it didn't achieve that.

With the sticky detonator I think 343 was trying to evolve consistency. The Sticky has fewer variables than the grenade launcher since it only takes two button presses to use and sticks to surfaces and thus is a bit more reliable than the grenade launcher. It also fills a similar role as it still takes a bit of skill to stick it to a vehicle and stick or land it near enough to a player to secure the kill. It's a fun little weapon but lacks some of the utility that the grenade launcher had.

Literally just about to say this and then saw the comment, although I think the trap feature is cool it wasn't really viable with the GL since it bounced around everywhere. However banking the GL off walls, floors, ceilings etc was super fun and when you hit those one-shots its insanely rewarding. Sticky Det and GL could exist as two different weapons in the sandbox IMO.

@@clevernamegotban1752 Kinda depends on what you wanna do. GL is more dynamic, but the grenade would bounce no matter what. So setting up traps was more complicated. SD was straight forward and had more control, but very predictable.

Exactly. 343i saw people using the EMP function on the Grenade Launcher to lay static traps and said "what if we made a weapon that let people do that easier". Essentially killing the wealth of mechanical depth of the Grenade Launcher because they wanted to make a mostly impractical gimmick a bit easier.

Some of them are, but I believe the most unique ones (White Scar, Void's Tear, Ad Victoriam, for example), deserve to be their own weapons. I'd even be interested in guns that gave stat boosts like Whispered truth's speed boost.

Honestly, I think that req weapons are kindof a good idea and can be done right. But they need be implemented in a way that keeps all there weapons original functions the same, but ads a new function to said weapons that doesn't necessarily make the a weapons outright more powerful then the weapons thier based off of but adds a level of uniqueness & utility to the weapons! They best example of how a req weapon should be implemented into halo is "Tarterus's Specail Gravity Hammer from Halo 3!" (i don't remember what the hammer he used was called) He could pretty much reverse gravity using that hammer to pull people and objects towards his hammer! It dosnt necessarily make his weapon stronger or weaker, it simply adds a new function that makes the weapon unique yet in the right hands FAR more devastating then its non req counterpart! The best part about req weapons, (especially for Halo) is that they could easily not only be used in multi-player mode but also in the campaign mode aswell to give bosses in game rare and unique weapons just like the Halo 3 Tarterus boss battle or something similar! If they can add req weapons like that to the Halo games I would probably be pretty supportive of it.

The GL is easily my favorite weapon in Reach, not just ebcause it’s powerful and fun to use but because it’s criminally underrated. When MCC came to PC and I was logging hour after hour in BTB, I quickly noticed that almost nobody ever picks up the grenade launcher. On any given map with a GL, in my experience there was at least a 90% chance it’d stil be at its spawn point when I went to pick it up. On many occasions, this is also true in Heavies, despite the fact that anti-vehicle damage is such a massive part of that gamemode. Everyone runs to pick up the easy-kill weapons like the Splaser or rockets and leaves the grenade launcher sitting there.

In Infinite, they could bring back the Reach Nade Launcher and Sticky Detonator as one gun: As EMP is now exclusive to shock weapons, have the Nade launcher's secondary fire stick to things like the sticky detonator instead, so you have a hard to hit, but lethal bouncing shot, and then a direct fire sticky shot you can manually detonate as a trap (which is sort of how it worked to begin with, just not being able to stick to things)

I'll die on the hill that the Reach GL is one of the most powerful weapons Bungie has ever introduced. In the hands of a skilled player the thing is freaking disgusting lol back in the day a buddy of mine used to pair it with a DMR and get back to back perfections. Didn't matter if it was 4v4 or BTB. I think the Sticky-Detonator is more player-focused in a way as a power weapon. Like for crowd-control, it easily setups for multi-kills. For passive use in a way, setting up a sticky like a tripmine in more utility usage works very well.

I love the grenade launcher, but if I had my way I'd have every gun in Halo's history as a way to celebrate the past years. I mean, it's not like every gun needs to be on every map, but it adds so much potential to maps, and custom games.

@@CmdrBrannick I think it could have something to do with how you're limited to carrying only two weapons at the same time, and they have to be different. Say, you carry a rocket laucher, which is very powerful, right? You spend your two rockets and then you have to take your time to reload and be vulnerable while doing it. Or you could swap to your secondary, which could be less suited for your task of instantly dispatching an enemy or even a group of them. Imagine you have two slightly different, but mostly the same rocket lauchers: you spend your two rockets, then much quicker swap to your second rocket launcher. And you also have double the ammo for your same-y power weapon in total. Same could be with sniper rifles. I felt this way in Halo Online Alpha (not the Eldewrito). Everyone could carry two BRs, which was worsened by the fact you played on Halo 3 maps like Standoff, and bullet velocity of HO's BR is much higher, and that those BRs could very well be upgraded base models, which were even more OP. That completely ruined the flow of Standoff for me - I had no fun covering behind the rocks or in the bunkers, because you'd get lasered with BRs as soon as you get in the open.

@@bloodgulchpatrick Yes, that would be true if the map creator put more than one rocket type on the map. But with Halo, you can choose what goes on your map and what guns everyone starts with, so of it's got bad weapons, that's the creators fault, not the fault of having all the guns in the game.

Exactly, it is skill based. If you dominate it you can get some nice sprees like if it were a power weapon, but that same skill gap turns players off because there are other weapons that are easier to use.

psst hey, you forgot another utility function it's got, it's grenades can detect enemies around it and warn the owner of the launcher if your paying attention to the gun model itself, so technically speaking...you can low key ping targets and set traps.

Thank you so much for making these videos. A lot of modern FPSs can learn a thing or two from shooters like Halo and Doom. Understanding WHY those games were and are so successful is key to making fun gameplay that doesn't get too repetitive. There's still large communities that play these games even decades after their release, just because the gameplay was that good. The same can't be said for a lot of there games. I just wish someone would bring back Tribes...

The spartan laser's damage needs to scale with the battery. 100% battery does 100 damage (to a tank), 75% does 75, etc. It should get weaker the more you use it.

Great video as always. I love this thing, even if it feels like a Luck Pipe sometimes with the bounces. I think the main problem that's preventing it from ever being in Infinite is that it wears too MANY hats a lot of the time. The trend with Infinite's sandbox is that it's taking functions from two basic weapons and combining them into something new (like Railgun + Splaser = Skewer), OR it's taking functions from a super-sophisticated weapon and breaking it down into component parts to avoid it being too powerful (like GL = Cindershot + Dynamo grenades). As for the Sticky Detonator question, I think 343 was trying to do the same thing as mentioned above in H4, neutering the GL's functional diversity (taking away EMP + impact damage to focus on explosive damage) to make more room for another weapon (the Concussion Rifle).

I'm looking forward to that sticky detonator video. It's easily my favorite weapon in Halo 4 and I could see so many fun ways of using it for Halo Infinite's open world campaign

The way that halo does weapons is kind of good but it doesn’t exactly work very well… why can’t we have worse versions of other weapons? It looks cooler so I want to use it! I WANT A PHYSICS WEAPON!!!!! (Physics weapon: a weapon that moves things like vehicles and stuff. EX: cuncusion rifle)

To me, the Sticky Detonator felt like it was made more to focus on killing and trapping, either sticking the shot to a player like the crossbow in CoD BO2, or by sticking to a surface and being remotely detonated like the stickybombs in Team Fortress 2.

100% Agree. The grenade launcher is the GOAT and I'm sad that the Hydra (probably) got it's spot. Especially after the Hydra's low-key ugly facelift.

After roughly 6 months of absolutely sucking at Firefight, this became my favorite weapon. You forgot one ability/utility of the GL. To be fair, it only applies to Firefight due to the maps and amount of ammo, but you can use it as an indirect support fire weapon. Essentially, a mortar. My teammates could call the location of the Phantom, and I would drop 3-4 shots and kill the enemies as the dropped in. The other option was for me to use the EMP function to drop shields while my teammates used the DMR to get one-shot kills on Elites. The most epic shots I ever had were with the GL. I have fired, missed the target, and waited for the grenade to come back off the wall BEHIND the target to hit them. Favorite, though, is still headshots (with EMP) on Elites. Don't know how many Banshees I have shot down with it. I once EMPed a Warthog, then bounced it off a cliff. So many fun times. In the hands of any player, the BR/DMR is great. In the hands of a skilled player, the GL is almost unstoppable. Lastly, 3:54. My dream. Boneyard map AND infinite ammo grenade launcher.

The Grenade Launcher was my absolute FAVORITE weapon in Reach! So... As someone introduced to the series 10 years ago through Reach, you can imagine my disappointment when I found out it wasn't in previous entries, & when it would never show up again in the franchise. :,)

I think the Grenade Launcher was developed in Reach to have a UNSC weapon capable of EMPing that could be a loadout weapon. For Firefight, it helped Spartans without access to vehicles or power weapons to counter enemy vehicles. And in Invasion, the Elites already had an EMP weapon in the Plasma Pistol, so for the balance of that gametype it made sense to give the Spartans an EMP vehicle too. I'm willing to bet the added functionality of the Grenade Launcher was discovered naturally during the weapon's development. As for the Sticky Det, since the Plasma Pistol was going to be a loadout weapon in H4, I'm guessing 343 thought it would be common enough that an additional EMPing weapon would be redundant for the sandbox, so the Sticky Det was made as a sort of evolution on the Grenade Launcher to double down on the "mine laying" functionality of the Grenade Launcher while shirking off the EMPing capability to let the Plasma Pistol shine more in that role. The weapon's ability to stick to surfaces and the mini-map on the detonator itself reinforce that role, making it more specialized for defense and area-of-denial than anti-vehicular (which it still does just fine, just not as good as the Grenade Launcher).

After a 6 year hiatus from gaming and thereby Halo aswell (I bought Halo 5, found it shit and never looked back), I got back into gaming two weeks ago just before hearing about the news of Halo Infinite dropping this year (that's how disconnected I was). I fired up my Xbox One and enjoyed some Reach and to a lesser extent, halo 4&5 gameplay. After 6 years of not playing I picked up the nade launcher and remembered the hold down trigger trick and was absolutely brutal with that thing! I enjoyed using it so much and was truely disappointed that Halo Infininte lost such a versatile and unique weapon.

Loved the grenade launcher in Reach. Also loved how you were introduced to it PERFECTLY in the campaign! Put right into the thick of the fight, with groups of enemies and 2 fuel rod turrets, teaching you how to prooerly use this masterpiece of a weapon in the first 5 minutes of the level. It's wonderful!

Fun fact Everything said here, applies to the Loose cannon in TF2. The sheer damage of a Double Donk is at times, utterly absurd. However, it is also Extordanarly hard to land. Also the ability to blast jump with a Sheild equipped can lead to some interesting manuvers.

So 343 actually just added a GL in the same vein as the RGL, called the Cindershot. It functions as a combination dumb-fire grenade, and the alt-fire tracks your crosshair like the Half-Life rocket launcher.
