Hey Mike, you forgot Qi Jiguang (戚繼光) of the Ming Dynasty. He was one of the most well known generals of his time, in his younger years he helped defeat the Japanese pirates that ravaged China's coastline. His writings on martial arts and the training of soldiers are still important as they've not been diluted or ruined by Communists and enough copies survived in Korea and Japan. It was Qi jiguang's books that helped improve Korea's chances during the first Japanese invasion. Qi Jiguang in his later years protected China's north borders from the Mongols. In his later years, he wrote further books on warfare and manoeuvres. Qi Jiguang is considered a national hero.

I personally think Xiang Yu was the most feared general of them all. He won 70 battles. He buried 200,000 Qin soldiers alive because he fought they were disloyal (this action cost him dearly, losing the support of the people and Liu Bang gained from it). In his last battle he told the ferryman to take his horse (Zhui) across the river because he was too ashamed to return home. Than he and 28 men fought wave after wave of Han troops and when Xiang was the last man standing he had several injuries before killing 100 men before taken his own life. What a badass!
@alexlinn3754
2 жыл бұрын
yup a total badass, a hero to his bone. Well he burned the capital XianYang. He can only be a great military commander, while Liu Bang had the intellect to be the emperor. Xiang Yu at one point had china pretty much under his control, and then he wants the return of the kingdoms. He could have established himself as the emperor, having a pretty much unified china, with Liu Bang as a little king. At that point, if Liu Bang still lucky to recruit Han Xing, the war would have been more interesting.. Han Xin only had to distract his enemy and sneak in with his 30k troops, and defeat them one by one and more people join him.

I have had the same copy of Sun Tzu, Art of war for over 20 years. I read it at least once a month. For me, it has to be read in sections. The amazing thing I find is that every time I read a section, it can be applied differently to many situations. Those situations depending on the things that are going on 'at the moment' and also the interpretation , (for me anyway), changes all the time depending on the situation. Might sound weird but that's my take.

That was Wang Jian who served under Ying Zheng the first emperor, he was famous for requesting Ying Zheng for an army that often out numbered his enemies, one famous example was the army he had asked for from Ying Zheng during his battle against Xiang Yan of Chu, when Ying Zheng granted him an army of six hundred thousand to fight Xiang Yan's two hundred thousand, and he remained undefeated. Bai Qi was a far more brutal general who focused on overpowering his enemies with the Qin army's superior equipment and training, and unlike Wang Jian who tried to fight perfect battles Bai Qi went out of his way to slaughter as many as possible without care for his own safety or that of his men.

Here’s some interesting knowledge about the titles of different generals: The total casualties of wars during the Warring State Period is 2 millions. People died under Baiqi’s direct command accounted for more than half of the total casualties. While Baiqi’s skill in fighting wars is unquestionable, he remains a rather controversial figure in Chinese history for some of the moral decisions he made. He ordered to bury 200000 surrendered soldiers of Zhao alive in the battle of Changping. That’s the reason why while Han Xin is given the title of 兵仙(the master of the art of war), people are reluctant to call Baiqi with any positive titles, such as the greatest general. Thus, many people call Baiqi 杀神 (The god of killing) or even 人屠 (Human butcher),instead of 战神 (The god of war).

han xin was not as loyal as described in this video..according to history he had tried to stage a revolted against his lord liu bang and for countless time he had deliberately ignored liu bang's pleas for reinforcements when he was under siege by xiang yu and decided to go to his rescue only after liu bang agreed to make him king of a certain territory...but with that said liu bang himself was also quite a despicable man..he ambushed xiang yu immediately after they signed the treaty for peace between the chu and han kingdom when he was on his way back to chu which was why liu bang was seen as a dishonorable man in chinese history books despite being the founding emperor of the han dynasty.

Cheng Yaojin was also a great chinese general. He served with a couple of early Tang emperors and was one of the most important people who helped Emperor Taizong secure his place on the throne that ushered in a century of prosperity and the golden age of all Asia. There's also a famous phrase of "半路殺出個程咬金" which directly translate to "Halfway there appears to be Cheng Yaojin" which meant that someone that's unexpected had suddenly arrived or a situation that isn't supposed to happen, happened. It was said that the phrase came about during an incident when he was serving with the rebel leader Li Mi in the end of the Sui dynasty against another rebel leader Wang Shicong. Shicong's forces has been taunting Yaojin's forces at the Shan gate and due to Yaojin's forces being barren in contrast to Shicong's forces by about 3:1, he decided to hold the fort while Shicong's forces taunted his forces down below the city walls. However, Yaojin came up with a brilliant plan. He ordered all his men to make straw men, tie it with a rope and slowly drop it down the wall to make it into a motion like they're rappelling down the city walls during midnight. When midnight struck, he did that and when Shicong's camp guards saw the dropping men, they shouted that an attack was coming and everyone woke up, grabbed their bows and started shooting wild arrows at Yaojin's position. After a few minutes, the camp was not attacked yet and when the enemy forces noticed something was wrong, they stopped firing and sent scouts out to see why they wern't attacking only to have the scouts returned back saying that they were all tricked as those dropping men were just decoy straw men. Yaojin knew his plan had worked so the next assault, he used the same trick but this time ordered his forces to use the same method but this time drop themselves down and charge the enemy camps. They did the whole trick again during midnight but Shicong's troops, thinking it was another decoy, did absolutely nothing and it was too late to react when they found out that Yaojin was already outside of their camp and started slaughtering their men. This is where the phrase "半路殺出個程咬金" came about.

Honestly Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a video game isn't well done at all. Koei is terrible at presenting the story, and don't take enough liberties with it to allow for a fluid and expansive world. Their best attempt was ROTK X, and even that was marred by the eventual pausing of all historical/fictional events. Read the novel, watch the show, and then play the game. You'll have a greater appreciation for the video game and it'll help show the significance of each general instead of just being a bunch of stats with numbers.

Regarding most feared generals in Chinese history, I don't think anyone could be more feared than Bai Qi, general of Qin state in the late Warring States period. At least I know this man caused huge destructions to military of countries including Wei, Han and Zhao. In 293, he ordered to kill 240 thousands soldiers of Wei, Han in the battle of Yique, and in 273, he went on to kill 130 thousands soldiers of Wei. Especially, in 260 BC, in the battle of Changping, he ordered to slaughter 400 thousands soldiers of Zhao who already surrendered to him. So it is not exaggerated to say that he single-handedly destroyed the defense capability of Zhao, Wei, Han, and made it ways easier for Qin Shi Huang to later unify China. He was brilliant since he remained undefeated though he was commander in largest battles in Chinese ancient history in terms of both sheer scales and destructions and meanwhile he had the brutality that no generals later can match. So if being feared is the criterion, he is definitely the man to be chosen. If he was not bad-mouthed to death in 257 BC, I believe he could have single-handedly conquered Zhao, Wei, Han, thus done pretty much 70% of the unification of China. Considering the importance of his contribution to Chinese history, he definitely made it to the top 5, ways more worth mentioning than generals from Yang family in Northern Song period, and even can challenge Han Xin and Yue Fei. Not to mention several others also much more qualified to the list than Yang generals such as: Li Shi Min (Tang Taizong) who was both brilliant general when he defeated multiple warlords united China in the midst of chaos after the fall of Sui dynasty and great emperor who made brilliant domestic policies and defeated one of the most powerful empire at that time: Gorturk empire, bringing dynastic China into its zenith of economic prosperity and military might ; Yuan Chonghuan despite being opposed by many officials in Ming dynasty court and Ming emperors themselves, against all odds, managed to firmly defend Ming northern borders against the constant attacks from Qing elite troops, if he was not later suspected and brutally killed by Ming Chongzhen Emperor, he could have single-handedly prevented China from being conquered by Manchu.

Too bad, the rival enemy found the better way to kill Yue Fei is through corrupt Song Dynasty. The Emperor sentenced his most loyal and strongest general to death. The previous emperor doesnt have his heart on politicis anyway before captured. If after Yue fei brings back the previous emperor, and then yue fei could have finished the Great Jin. Koei has a much more accurate game series on the Three Kingdoms period called Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which is based off of the classic novel of the same name. That is also a step removed from the actual history of the period, which you can see by reading Records of the Three Kingdoms. I would highly recommend reading that if you are interested in the people as that ends up giving a much more balanced look at what transpired. tl;dr Historical accuracy: Dynasty Warriors < Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Koei game series) < Romance of the Three Kingdoms (classic novel) < Records of the Three Kingdoms (authoritative historical text) Minor note, there is a very strong argument for Zhuge Liang to be a fraud, centering around discrepancies and the fact that he was the only editor and writer of Shu history (a unexcusably flawed record keeping system).

I personally studied a lot about Yuefei, dude was not fond of Art of War, as he believes 运用之妙,存乎一心, which means to focuses on adaptation and innovation rather than following tradition. He renovated the Infantry vs Cavalry game due to Song dynasty's lack breeding ground of war horses, he lost very few battles if any at all in an Infantry vs Cavalry warfare. His strategies varies so much and was so well perfected that Jurchen did not know how to properly counter so they feared facing Yuefei on the field. Yuefei was what you can call a mad war scientist in his day, most generals of his rank loved bribes and women, Yuefei had no concubines nor mistress, b/c he was so focused on his profession that he had little thoughts of these until the Jurchens were driven out of 幽云十六州 (which sadly never happened). Also in his later years he got tired of politics and started writing and reading (he was not well educated), and became extremly well-literate, he wrote some of the most blood-boiling poetry in history. His military accomplishments, ethics (work and loyalty) and his literature composition are what made him the triple golden standard of achivement. Being a big fan of history, I'd like to point out that most of the successful Chinese generals are in fact non-traditional thinkers and exceptional improvisators. I personally hate to see Chinese being led to believe Chinese culture is about following tradition rather than adaptation and innovation, and we just all chuck it to being "traditional", and that somehow really stuck with us.

You definitely have to go back and study Chinese. There is no substitute for it. Chinese history was always written as records up for the reader to interpret, not ready-baked analytical history. If it wasn't, we'd have the whole "he says, she says" situation that plagues Western thought and discourse (Trump is exposing analytical history's weakness with "post-truth dialogue"). Remember that everyday Chinese is called vernacular Chinese and it is not equivalent to classical Chinese, which is what the history books are written in. It's worth the study though, because you'll find out about some really interesting historical figures. For example, there's an interesting godfather figure in the Sui-Tang period, General Dugu Xin. His four daughters *all* became princesses or mothers of various dynasties and tribes, uniting the barbaric Northern tribes with both the Sui *and* Tang emperors. While he had to commit suicide when implicated in a plot, he was the great familial uniter of the lands. It seems that the bonds of family are stronger than 400 years of division and disarray!

What you said about the Yang Clan is inaccurate, especially what you said about the Northern Song Dynasty starting at 5:50. Firstly, the Northern Song imperial court was not corrupt and lack luster organisation teetering of the verge of destruction. The Song court of Emperors Taizong, Zhenzong, and Renzong was full of order, diligence and capability. Also the Northern Song was not constantly invaded, as a matter of fact they spent a lot of time invading others as well. Emperor Taizong of Song lead invasions of the Khitan led Liao dynasty twice and Yang Ye actually died while invading the Liao with Song forces, not defending Song form their invasion. Also Pan Mei did not abandon Yang Ye to fight the Khitan alone out of jealousy but rather because he suffered a major defeat at Khitan hands earlier that day and could not hold a critical position for Yang to retreat to. Finally, Yang Ye was not starved to death by the Khitans, he voluntary staved himself to death as an act of defiance to them. Please don't use TV drama as your source material for future videos.

Agreed, contrary to the opera/legends...early Song dynasty was actually the aggressor against Liao since they wanted to recover the Yan-yun 16 prefectures that was ceded to the Liao years earlier. They launched not 1 but 2 offensives against Liao. It was Zhenzong's time that the Khitans became aggressive and invaded large scale.

The inclusion of the Yang's generals was a mistake. Yang's are famous because of a fictional novel, not historical fact. Besides, Yang's military achievements were completely not worth mentioning comparing to other great Chinese generals. Sun Tzu was famous for his book not for his military achievements as a commander. Han Xin and Yue Fei are truly two of the top generals in Chinese history. There were many others. The one definitely being among the top five is Qi Jiguang. Qi achieved probably the most amazing record of casualty ratio between his and enemy's troops: over 1:100 in not just China but also the entire ancient world due to his military genius. He made that casualty record not just once but repeatedly; not by ambushing or surprise but in frontal battles; which was beyond any standard of military talent. He was also the one who designed and built the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. His military genius is beyond description.

Sun Tzu was not the commanding military officer in the campaign of Wu (吳) against Chu (楚). That's because the King of Wu led the campaign. Sun Tzu was the military advisor to the king. I attribute the success of the campaign to Sun Tzu 's military genius and the Wu King's capability to take follow right advice. Though the history record did not detail the interaction between the 2 for us to tell who contribiute what. I believe it's safer to assume the guy who wrote a great military book contribute more on military.

The only knock on Qi Jiguang is other than 1 raid that he repelled, he didn't get a full chance to fight the Mongols as the borders began to stabilize.

There's really not a whole lot of Yang Ye's early career recorded down unfortunately. He seem to really distrust the Khitan even though Northern Han was their ally
@rayray6490

@Vlnxd Roa ...by the time Yang Ye surrendered to Song dynasty it was already late in his military career. Before that Yang Ye formerly Liu Jiye was a Northern Han general, and he advised his lord to double cross their Khitan allies to steal their warhorses. Yang Ye seem to have a bad history with the Khitans. But not much was recorded in detail
@rayray6490

@Vlnxd Roa first off Liao didn't invade China proper. That was a popularized misconception. Song dynasty was the aggressor in the beginning, twice they launched two major offensive campaigns to recover the 16 prefectures from Liao. Liao originally obtained the prefectures from Shi Jingtang a local warlord who ceded the lands for their support. I've had the copy of the entire of the 5 Dynasties 10 Kingdoms records fyi

Well just as often, if not more, generals end up rebelling and many establish themselves as the emperor of a new dynasty, though many of these dynasties are very short-lived. Which is why China which had a traditionally a very militaristic culture turned to Confucianism which preached loyalty to Emperor and promoted social hierarchy. Over time it signficantly dumbed its martial culture from the Warring States to the point that it didn't even have a standing army until the Song Dynasty.
@brancanorris8933

Sheyla Gomes only one of them is in the case of what you described. many of them were killed because bad people wants power, so they manipulate to get good guys in trouble. this happens often when a dynasty about to fall apart and the emperor at the time was stupid. these don't normally happen with wise emperors as they were not easy to be manipulated.

Hey, Suntzu was in Spring and Autumn period with his biggest achievement being in the year of 506BC when Wu army managed to take over Chu's capital and forced Chu's king to be in exile, at that time, there was no concept of 7 warring states fighting each other yet. In fact, 3 major states among 7 warring states which were Zhao, Wei, Han had not been around yet. In fact, not until 403 BC, Zhao, Wei, Han officially became states when they were recognized by Zhou dynasty's king. Zhao, Wei, Han were just 3 big houses within the state of Jin which still remained very powerful state in the year of 506 BC. The map you used in the part of Suntzu was also not correct since the map did not show some major states at the year of 506 BC which were Jin, Wu and Yue, not to mention many other states like Zheng, Song, Lu, and Qin was not that big in the year of 506. The map looks like the situation in around 260 BC which was the year of the bloody Changping battle where 400 thousands Zhao soldiers were slaughtered by Qin's army. In short, if you want to tell history, please make it precise.

I've read that court bureaucracy positions were considered far more prestigious than military positions. That could explain all the plots. The court bureaucrats were jealous that people who they considered less important than themselves were getting fame and favour.

Sun tzu: apparently the art of war was really composed by many generals after sun tzu yet it was just credited to him Han xin: as smart as he was, he just couldn't beat xiang yu, so it's hard to rank him as the most feared general over a guy he couldn't beat. If anything xiang yu was the one that struck fear in the hearts of those around that time Yue Fei: man, myth, legend- it's really hard to differentiate

Just a mention that there is a song describing Yueh Fei's epic victory - Man Jiang Hong - and a sword form whose movements follow the story. I visited his tomb when I was traveling in China back in 1986 and heard/saw a father telling his young son Yueh Fei's story as if it happened only a short time ago.

Though him and his army lost, the chinese acknowledged his great leadership and built him a monument after his death. Just something i wanted to share. Less known and taught in school compared to those mentioned in the video. The generals of warring state were brilliant, brutal, but unlike the generals in this video, their life/story can't really be use for education. Yue Fei in particular is the embodiment of the word loyalty itself. As such, the popularity differ.

It's a good list, but it's a travesty to leave out Guo Ziyi, whose accomplishments under dire circumstances should be second to Yue Fei. 1) Credited by historians and reigning emperor to have single-handedly saved Tang from collapse, during An Lushan rebellion. 2) So feared by foreign powers that when he was rumored to be dead of old age, the Tibetan-Uyghur alliance invaded opportunistically. In the middle of the invasion, he rode into alone Uyghur's camp alone, and demanded audience. The Uyghurs were so distressed that they defected to Tang's side. (edited with more context on the Tibetan-Uyghur invasion)

I think this channel is for those who doesnt know Chinese history well, sort of an intro to Chinese history/culture which i do appreciate. Now back to the video, the only problem is the Yang Generals, easily replaced by some of the many more talented generals like Bai Qi 白起, Qi Ji Guang 戚继光, Li Jing 李靖 just to name a few. The reason being, Yang generals died in battle, they won, but at the end, they lost, so they are not feared.

Hey mike, you forgot Li Mi (李彌). he was a high-ranking Nationalist general who participated in the anti-Communist Encirclement Campaigns, Second Sino-Japanese War and Chinese Civil War. He was one of the few Kuomintang commanders to achieve notable victories against both Chinese Communist forces and the Imperial Japanese Army. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he withdrew his forces to Burma and Thailand, where he continued to carry out guerrilla raids into Communist-held territory. he later exiled to Taiwan for obvious reasons, which by the way is free and independent country with its own unique ethnic groups, currency, culture and military. COMMUNISM MUST BE CRUSHED EVERYWHERE!!! 🇹🇼❤🇺🇸

Mike Chen, very much appreciate your promotion of Chinese culture and history. However, our history and culture can not be expressed in a short clip after all we have over 5 thousand years history. There are 72 official feared general (paragon worship) under god of war temple 武庙 but till qing dysnasty reduced to only guan yu. Some general/strategist wasn't listed as paragon but their deeds are far greater (ancient china historian record are bond by pronunciation thus some general name was excluded) My personal favorite is Li Mu 李牧, the 1st person in human history who use infantry defeat cavalry and the 1st person who defeat the Hun.

Game of Thrones already does take a few notes from Chinese history. Of course, it's MOSTLY inspired from Western politics, but you can see some in there. I'm sure George R. R. Martin has at least heard of if not read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. For most Far-East Asian societies, you don't start writing historical fiction until you've read that thing. It's like your bible.
