you guys are semi right. There were African, Hispanic, Asian and Native Americans who were all put up for medals of honor. Some got them. Some didn't, at least not until much later. Yes it's a shame, but there's something else. The same went with Irish, Jewish, Italian and German Americans. Basically everyone. In total, over 16 million people in the US alone served in WWII. over a million became casualties. 400,000+ dead and another 600,000 wounded. And yet there are less than 500 medals of honor dished out for actions in WWII. Including those done well after the war. The reason isn't as simple as it sounds. when the medal was initially devised and handed out during the civil war, it was kinda just handed out 'because'. But as it went on, the medal became less and less about actual grit and heroism, and more about politics and 'optics'. That right there is the reason why 'Chesty' Puller of the Marine corps had 5 Navy crosses and not a single medal of honor. Most of those actions were put up for medal of honors, but he was deemed 'bad for publicity'. as the US's wars progressed, more and more medals of honor were only given out posthumously. As dead guys can be vetted easier and can't really do anything to mess up publicity afterwards. It's unfortunate that I have to say this, but alot of the MoH's given after Vietnam were for pomp and show, and the majority of the people and actions that deserved said medal, would never and will never get one. There are alot of rules revolving around the MoH and unfortunately one is that it's "impossible" to upgrade from a 'lesser' medal to the MoH for the same action. This rule is often times the one they give us about why certain military personnel can no longer receive the MoH. But it's also disregarded when a politician wants to lay a political smokescreen and earn some 'street cred' among the veteran and military communities. TLDR: There are a lot of good stories deserving of MoH's but because of it's more political implications since after the early 1900s, our best way of honoring these stories is keeping them alive by talking about the people behind the stories. Like Yarnhub does. They've done more for the heroes of past wars and conflicts, than any politician ever has.
