China dominates the headlines of U.S. newspapers and broadcast networks, yet there’s total silence about the biggest story to have ever come out of China. 850 million people have been lifted out of poverty in the last few decades. China previously had nearly 3/4 of the world’s impoverished people, and now it is virtually zero - an unprecedented feat.
They didn’t do it through macro economic policy alone but through Targeted Poverty Alleviation policies that required getting into every small village to resolve the everyday problems caused by underdevelopment.
On this week’s episode, Amanda and KJ are joined by Tricontinental Institute researcher and art director Tings Chak to discuss how China eradicated extreme poverty, how this fits into the CPC’s vision of “socialist modernization,” and what has followed since the conclusion of the poverty alleviation program four year ago.
Our understanding of China - and U.S.-China relations - has become a defining feature of all global politics. The China Report is a new show produced in collaboration with Pivot to Peace where every week, journalist Amanda Yee and political analyst KJ Noh will be helping you through all the propaganda with an independent view of the country we are taught to hate, but know so little about.
