Among all the dubious claims, the most dubious is the claim -- or at least the suggestion -- by the Etihad airways spokesperson that something they're doing to avoid creating contrails has reduced their carbon footprint by 5000 tons. The carbon footprint is determined 100% by how much gas is burned. The "cloud" part of the contrail, the visible part that you see, is water vapor (H2O, no carbon). Most of the water vapor is already there and a little bit is created by combustion. So whether you produce a contrail or not has *zero* impact on your carbon footprint. It's entirely a function of how much gas you burn. It's exactly the same whether you produce a contrail or not. And as you note, some of these suggestion will cause more gas to be burned which will actually increase the carbon footprint.
@meneken17
2 жыл бұрын
It depends on which definition of "carbon footprint" you use. You can count the CO2 emissions only. But what is usually done, is calculating the CO2-equivalent, which includes CO2, but also methane, nitrous-oxides and other stuff and especially water vapor. Therefore the claim might be valid.
@lastdance2099
2 жыл бұрын
@@meneken17 No, the claim cannot be valid. The contrails are *not* an indication of creation of a lot of water vapor. The combustion process does produce some water vapor, but the vast majority of water vapor in a contrail comes from water vapor that was already in the atmosphere the plane is moving through. And the amount of methane, nitrous-oxides is *solely* a function of the gas burned. Modifying their routes to avoid contrails *alway* burns more gas than otherwise, thus those emissions are always increased by trying to avoid contrails.
@ImpendingJoker
2 жыл бұрын
@@meneken17 Water vapor is not part of the calculation. Why? Because that is what green technology is striving for. Water as a by product and fuel source. A few points I feel should have been included in the video: - The insulation effect of clouds work both ways, the clouds also reflect sun heat back to space. You can research on albedo effect and cloud seeding to combat climate change, and the effect of 9/11 plane grounding. - Water vapor is a powerful greenhouse effect gas. But its in a self regulated system. Condensation specially is the process that removes vapor from atmosphere. The engine exhaust leaves water vapor whether you see it as condensation or not.

It doesn’t really work both ways at night though… and if you read the actual articles/research on this you would know that night time flights are the worst as far as warming goes. At night time, contrails/contrail cirrus clouds basically only act to reflect heat that’s radiating out from the earth back towards the surface at earth, which increases warming. This is a documented phenomena that’s been being investigated for decades and I found 3 major studies on it (including one in Nature, an extremely reputable and prestigious scientific journal, and two in atmospheric science related journals) from approximately 30 seconds of using Google.

Because there’s an airport pretty close to where I live they’re often low enough to recognise the livery. But of course it helps that I now work at that airport in ground handling. 😆 The highlight of my shift yesterday was being in the cleaning team aboard one of the 737 max 8’s focusing on my work when I looked up at the wall, tilted my head to one side slightly and said. “Dreamliner is down.” (Landed.” And my colleagues looked at me and asked. “How do you know that?“ Because I’m not in a place where I can see outside. After a couple moments of confusion I finally realised that I’d heard it. Somehow I can distinguish it from the smaller planes the airport serves. How I can do that? I really don’t know.

That's interesting: I remember the exact opposite conclusion coming out of academia after 9/11: since all flights over the USA were banned for a few days, it gave a way to measure the impact of aviation. Thought I would share this from the FAA themselves on contrails. Are they dangerous to humans? Absolutely not. This question is often asked based on the misunderstanding of the so-called ‘chemtrails’ which presumably represent trails consisting of harmful chemicals. Contrails are a type of cirrus clouds consisting of predominantly ice particles. A major portion of the water to form these particles comes from the atmosphere itself, and a small portion is from the engine exhaust

Don’t clouds also block the sun’s radiant energy from heating the earth’s surface? Clouds temporarily trap heat already present, they simply delay that warmth’s dissipation. You're right in that if all the contrails were avoided, the temperature would drop a little immediately and then nothing else would happen. It's a short term help.

So Kelsey is quite right that the main point is to minimize the amount of fuel burned and CO2 produced. On a cool side note - each wing tip produces a tip vortex - as the wing pushes down to support the plane, air flows around the end of the wing tip from underside to top and forms a cylinder of spinning air extending back along the flight path. The water and smoke from the engines gets pulled into this vortex which helps to keep the cloud from spreading out, instead staying as sharp lines. These vortexes are also what endangers small planes close behind a big jet. Now here's what's cool - as the vortexes spread out they begin to interact and since they spin in opposite directions interactions can cause them to break into giant smoke rings. You will see the contrails lines break and if the air around them is still enough you will see a the two lines of contrail re-form into a procession of rings.

The density of the water vapor probably has some effect. That is, dense water vapor, otherwise known as a cloud, will have different effects on the atmosphere than spread out water vapor. For example, during the day, a cloud can serve to reflect some of the sun's rays back into space. This is why on a sunny day when a cloud passes overhead, the temperature below the cloud may decrease a little. However, at night, a cloud may serve as an insulating layer, keeping more heat on the Earth's surface, thereby increasing the temperature. However, as contrails occupy a relatively small part of the atmosphere, as compared to naturally forming clouds, as dissipate relatively quickly, their impact on heat retention in the atmosphere is probably insignificant.

Well, there is some validity to the cloud part. When 9/11 happened in the US, all aircraft was grounded throughout the country. Meteorologists noticed a much clearer sky later that day and next day, mainly around large airports. It did make some difference in ground temperature, actually warmer, not cooler as the sun was able to hit the ground.

@brianwest2775

It's complicated. "During the day, clouds reflect a portion of the solar energy that reaches Earth back into space. This prevents the planet from becoming too warm. Clouds can also act like a blanket, trapping heat on Earth by absorbing the heat released by the surface of the planet. They radiate this heat back toward Earth, warming the lower regions of the atmosphere. Whether clouds heat or cool the surface of Earth depends on the height and type of cloud present in the sky. High-level, feathery clouds help heat the planet during the day, allowing sunlight to penetrate the surface and prevent heat from escaping. Meanwhile, lower level clouds often reflect heat from the sun back into space and keep the surface temperatures cool. Cloud cover can also limit the cooling that occurs in a region at night. Typically, the solar heat absorbed by the ground during the day is released at night as Earth cools. The warm air near the ground rises in a process known as radiative cooling. However, if thick cloud cover is present over a region where such radiative cooling is happening, some of the heat is trapped and reflected back to Earth by the clouds. This keeps the surface warmer than it would be during a night without cloud cover."

As someone who is interested in meteorology and climatology, I know certain things about this and I have come across more reliable information about this subject in the past. The bottomline has was always that during the night the temperature stays higher than normal (this effect is indeed very strong with clouds that consist of ice crystals), but during the day the temperature stays also lower. I also know that I have seen days where these trails keep hanging for a long time, so that part is true. But that was when a lot of natural Cirus clouds where around as well. Most important problem is the water vapour itself, not ice crystals or cloud droplets. Water vapour is indeed a greenhouse gas. And aircraft exhaust a lot of it. The solution is simply that we as humanity need to stop with combustion as our main energy source. Other energy sources are really the future. A smaller success is with different more birdlike shaped aircraft to improve aerodynamic properties. It's not just the trails.

The original article is "Contrail cirrus radiative forcing for future air traffic" by Lisa Bock and Ulrike Burkhardt and it models the impact of climate change. From what I'm seeing, it looks like the place in the world where contrails make up the largest fraction of air travel's impact is in the US, where it's currently around 28%. The paper says that as prosperity and population increase in the tropics their contrails will be significantly more important due to much higher humidity making thicker and more persistent contrails. It then goes through several future models of air travel frequency around the world. It's a pretty reasonable paper.

The water and smoke from the engines gets pulled into this vortex which helps to keep the cloud from spreading out, instead staying as sharp lines.These vortexes are also what endangers small planes close behind a big jet. Now here's what's cool - as the vortexes spread out they begin to interact and since they spin in opposite directions interactions can cause them to break into giant smoke rings. You will see the contrails lines break and if the air around them is still enough you will see a the two lines of contrail re-form into a procession of rings.

Making the most environmentally friendly choice is a lot more complicated than buying locally. For instance, if you have a manufacturing plant making motherboards in taiwan and their components are sourced from South Korea, Japan and Malaysia, they're all relatively close and can be shipped without much impact. If you make the same motherboard in east Canada and there isn't equivalent components available in the USA or Europe now you have to get your components shipped from halfway across the planet.
@ashkebora7262
2 жыл бұрын
True, though the counter to that is: The retail packaging and addins on the mobo are likely going to end up adding a lot _more_ weight coming over the ocean. Even basic protective packaging for an entire mobo is a good bit more than some of the packaging options for components: Some of them are designed specifically to go right in to mass production machinery. You don't want a lot of waste or packaging when you need thousands upon thousands of each component in a single shipment. The end result is... The truth of the matter is more complicated. Even of you move _all_ of manufacturing near by, you are no doubt still going to need physical resources that are only mined and refined far away. At least raw resources tend to have basically _no_ packaging, but that's still a lot of mass to move! Especially unrefined resources. Plenty of stuff _can_ be done totally locally, though! Like certain food items and normal manufacturing (EG: wood usually doesn't _need_ to travel too far, depending on species around where you live). Though certain things might always have to have peculiar supply chains.

One thing I really liked is, unlike others, Kelsey didn't completely deny that contrails do lead (in a very, VERY MINISCULE way) to global warming...just like every other cloud. The exhaust products (mostly CO2 and fully gaseous water) of burning 25k lbs of fuel are what contribute to global warming. Contrails are just small clouds, and clouds generally contribute to local cooling. During the day the clouds reflect more of the sun's heat back into space than they reflect the Earth's heat back to the ground. At night there is no heat coming directly from the sun, so clouds help keep the ground warmer, but contrails are thickest during the day when there are more flights in the sky, so their nighttime warming effect doesn't compare to their daytime cooling effect. And all of this, as I mentioned, is minimal compared to the warming effect of the exhaust gases themselves. Those are clear to the bulk of the sun's light, allowing the sun to heat up the surface mostly unimpeded, but absorb invisible infrared light that radiates from the Earth's surface.

Whilst I totally understand contrails. I live under London airspace which apart from low level traffic, I see heaps of high level North Atlantic traffic. Here’s the thing. During lockdown with no traffic, the sky was so noticeably crystal clear, deep blue and with no milky sky’s as normal. I can’t accept contrails disappear quickly. They tend to dissipate into like a white cirrus clouds and often linger for hours. Combined with high level transatlantic traffic passing constantly (I mean every 2 mins), it definitely obscures the sky and I wonder if it’s creating a greenhouse effect?
@Canleaf08

The greenhouse effect is created by gases, like CO2 and NO2. No clouds, no contrails.
@ayumikuro3768
2 жыл бұрын
First of, during lockdown there could have been other compounding factors, a lot of cities also had better air quality due to less car traffic. Second: Yes, water vapor is a greenhouse gas. Water readily absorbs light in the infrared. However high clouds also have the benefit of increasing the Earth's albedo (basically it increases the reflectiveness of Earth), reducing the amount of incoming energy from the sun. I can't exactly tell you how that balances out, but there were geoengineering plans to artificially create cloud cover to cool the Earth. However it's also part of why climate change is a positive feedback loop. Higher temperatures cause more water to evaporate, which absorbs more heat, which increases the average temperature and so forth. Also water vapor is invisible (steam is condensing water droplets, same for clouds) and still absorbs infrared light. So it's probably better to have contrails than not having them, because at least a white cloud reflects visible light back to space, which then doesn't heat up Earth.

See a need, fill a need. And if there isn't a need, make one up and charge people for it. I swear, this is either a company trying to make a market for planes that have a useless feature so they can corner the market, or an airline trying to convince people that they are more green, and therefore better to purchase tickets for. Sadly, most of these sort of uninformed things are either giant commercials or a PR skit.

One of the suggested methods for fighting global warming is making more clouds. While clouds will hold temperature down to the ground by reflecting the heat back down, the clouds are also white on the top. The top is where the sun is. They reflet more heat away from reaching the ground and back into space than the amount of heat they trap near the ground, preventing it from getting to space.

After the 9/11 attacks, all air traffic was grounded for 3 days, creating a unique situation in which to study the effects of contrails. @@zedzeduk It wasn't that they were cooler, it was that the diurnal temperature difference (difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures within 1 day) increased.
