Great info! I moved from Orlando in January. I was paying $220/mo on utilities, $600/mo on car expenses, $1200/mo on rent (my share), $600/mo on food and groceries. I now live in San Antonio near Chapala and ajijic. My rent is $800, $40 in utilities and $30 for my housekeeper. $50-$60/week in food. I live a very relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable life for half the price. I can actually afford to live here easily! What a joy!

Oh. I have always paid my housekeepers well and give them raises and bonuses on the holidays They have families to help support 👍. Since first coming to Mexico 5 years ago I’ve always had really good help.

Absolutely. In fact, if you hire them directly as an hourly employee instead of treating them like a contractor and paying "by the job" you legally must pay holiday bonuses, social security, severance, etc. That said, the average pay for a maid is MX$45/hr (about $2.60), although you'd expect to pay a bit more for just a few hours to make up for travel time, etc. And of course you pay more if you go through an agency, or if you need more advanced services like cooking or elder care. Reading Ajijic message boards it seems people are paying around MX$70/hr for part time help, likely higher than other areas due to gringo inflation. US$250/mo probably covers that maid's family's entire rent and utilities, for just 1 partial day of work per week!

Thanks for your update on expenses. I am single living in Guanajuato, so my expenses are slightly different. I have no car or air conditioning. You both are cute wearing your hats inside your house! Your clothing expenses are quite unique. I usually shop for clothing when I go back to the USA. My mail service is in the United States, not in Mexico.

Your relocation services sound interesting. Just to learn about insurance. You should note that you are talking about Lake Chapala. A location known for having a lot of Expats. Other parts of Mexico can be significantly different.

It is not at all easy to find a decent rental. FB once had a list of private contacts, and even that was impossible. Beware of “professionals” posing as legit property managers: they take the money and run (my instinct saved me). Ajíjic area is CROWDED; it is a narrow stretch of land wedged between the lake and the mountains. There are only so many strolls you can take along the malecons to make you ask “is that all there is?

Hi Jerry, I would imagine with owning that beautiful house there you've developed many close friends there in Ajijic. You must have a lot of parties and why am I never invited? 😂

I imagine the strong peso has made everything more expensive. We used to spend $400/mo on groceries in Guadalajara a couple years ago for 2 people. But that is largely because we like our Asian food and European cheese and butter. Local produce is cheap but imported goods are quite expensive. The 200 peso Telcel pay-as-you-go package provides 3gb data and unlimited calling in North America for 30 days, so x2 that’s about $23.50/mo for two people. You are WAY too generous with your maid. Should be about $15/visit covering half a day of work (we used to pay $12 before inflation). I want to clarify that a $5 car wash in Mexico is closer to a detail job in the US. At least the last one I got two guys spent hours trying to vacuum all the dog hair out of the back of our SUV, hand washed the outside, got all the crevices in the dash, etc. You are fortunate not to have toll highways in your area. Those add up fast in other parts of Mexico. One nice thing about Mexico is that property tax is low ($250/yr?) and includes garbage collection multiple times per week. In the US even after you have paid off your house you still pay more in taxes and garbage than the entire cost of rent in Mexico!

Hey guys! That sounds a bit high for a house cleaner. You can get a cheaper one. We can get our entire apartment building cleaned for less. I’m curious, how much are your property taxes?

Thanks for sharing! Like we said in the video we pay extra money for our maid and for property taxes we pay $500 a year.
