It amazes me that after everything you see in these videos and all the comments by his teammates and adversaries that people still think that Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, ronaldinho and so on ARE the GOATs. They're great, but Maradona embodies everything you wish to be on the field. The leadership, the competitive spirit, the generosity, the respect for the game, the hunger, the determination, the child within, the control, dribbling, speed, cunning..... god, the list is endless. The fact is that no one can beat that. No other player can top that.

Excellent comment. For me, the only player that came close to touching the stardust from which Maradona was made is Zinedine Zidane - that same insane first touch, balletic balance, close-quarters control, skill, vision, and elegance - but even then it still isn’t close. Absolutely not! The fitness and strength levels back then were far off today standards. There are a lot of Maradona level players at the technical level since him that didn't make the cut simply because of that. There is no protection from referees today, you just imagine. Look at his stats, and watch some of his matches in Serie A, LaLiga or Eureopean cups. He was a huge player of his generation, but questionable if today he would outshine a top player. You touched upon it, but the difference between Maradona and Mesi/C Ronaldo, is that Maradona had no protection from the ref. Football was far more physical in the 80's. I admire Messi a great deal, but he wouldn't dominate a match like Maradona could, if defenders were allowed to hack him down. Maradona had a will to succeed and a physicality, that would make him unplayable in the modern game. He would have so much time and freedom on the ball. From poverty, dangerous neighborhoods, hunger, Maradona was forged in adversity, that made him grow and be who he was. Maradona's level in the 1986 World Cup is the highest level of a player in history. Pelé scored more goals and won world championships alongside giant stars, in fact he did not play all the games. Messi has broken all records, but nobody reached the level of a god, only Maradona.

One thing overlooked in the Maradona Messi comparison is that, in my view one of the differences in Maradona compared to Messi is Maradona has a work Rate and physicality that Messi doesn’t have, even in Messi’s prime sometimes in games you forget he’s there because he’s not running around or doing anything if he doesn’t have the ball, Maradona was defensively light years ahead of Messi, which enabled him to be a midfield playmaker back in the days when the 4-4-2 was more rigid, or as a second striker because of his physical side

Mradona won the Serie A title with Napoli, /.........to give some context, Serie A at the time, WAS the Prem in that it was teh best league, around 5 -6 teams could win it, and each of them had the best players from all over. Maradona took Napoli from a mid table side to winning the thing against the best players in the world. It would be like Neymar joining Brighton on Crystal Palace, and within a couple of seasons they win back to back Premierships, He did the same with Argentina and the world Cup, they were average and he pretty much did the Gerrard Liverpool 05 thing, ut even more so , with the World cup could Messi or Ronaldo or Neymar do that? I dont think so myself, and this is why he is the GOAT for me, but I respect anyone else having a different opinion, and I can see why people today say Messi and Ronaldo ,they are both phenomenal

"He's the original", you said it. He invented all the football you've seen, the FIFA changed the rules after 1982 World Cup because of the really nasty tackles to Maradona that left Argentina (the champion) away of that World cup. My first time in a stadium was with Maradona in 1992, and as argentinian i can truly say that, sadly, it's impossible to transmit. You can hear the Beatles now, but you'll never understand what THAT meant when they did it. Maradona created the modern football in every single play, he taught all who followed how to play and what could be done with a ball. Obviously those who ran with that advantage (and infinitely better conditions and care) had time to beat him in records and marks. But when we compare here with Messi and people asks about "the goat". I say: "Ask the ball..." (absolute silence).

He's the most gifted footballer of all time. Sure, Messi, Cristiano and many others will have scored/created more goals, won more trophies and are/were more professional off the pitch. Maradona's range of skills - passing, dribbling, first touch, ball manipulation.... coupled with his God tier spatial and general awareness - his sense of anticipating the picture in front of him will never be beaten I don't think. Then you have all the incredible, magical moments he produced on the pitch, and perhaps his greatest strength, his ability to improve those around him - Napoli and Argentina were not great teams in the 80's/90's, they had a few fine individuals, but were very much underdogs against the powerhouses. Yet, Maradona took them to glory, and not just once in the case of Napoli. The only player who's come close to Maradona in this respect was Baggio, when he carried (in an attacking sense) Italy to the 1994 final and Brescia - perennial relegation fodder - twice into Europe.

If you love the free kicks, you NEED to check out the free kick MASTER - Ronald Koeman, of the Netherlands, and Barcelona. In a star studded line up, Ronald, a DEFENDER, is your man for anything remotely in shooting range. He got some INCREDIBLE power, bend, and accuracy. The Ajax of the 70's was fascinating too. Ajax were a tiny little provincial town club with like 3 part time employees, when Johann Cryuff came through their youth ranks. They happened to have quite a few REALLY good players at that time, and a revolutionary coach. They brought Total Football to the world, where every player can play in every position. They won the European Cup, the equivalent of the Champions League. Many of their players were also in the Netherlands national team. They lost two World Cup Finals in a row, 1974 then 1978. The 1978 team, Cryuff played a much bigger role. If I recall, the coach of Ajax was also the coach for the Netherlands.

Did you know that the people in napoli (naples, italy) considered maradona almost their living God during in his prime (i think in the 1985-1990) even after his death. at that time, when he was drafted to play in SERIE A (italian cup) he went to a losing team that has no standing records and amongst the odds against of those strong teams (AC milan, Inter Milan, Juventus). and when he did, he brought that team to the top most outstanding clubs not only in their league, they even became champions in European cup (champions league), they became 2 consecutive champions in their league cup, super cup and of course, his infamous THE HAND OF GOD, that was never even had any players in football history ever did that impossible move yet he did proved it himself that he is not only the ever known as the hand of God but el rey de mundo (the best of entire world). respect! RIP!

The real GOAT......Ask any Argentinian which Number 10 they would want in their prime....Diego would win. And this was when players were trying to break legs, in this era with the protection players have, great pitches etc, Maradona would be untouchable. Messi needs a TEAM to compliment him. Maradona was a TEAM on his won

The difference trying to compare Messi with Maradona is that Messi was a better team player, so put top class players around him and Messi excels. Where as Maradona was the nearest thing to a one man team. Messi was the better allrounder with more longevity at the top where as Maradona hit bigger heights, he was a fantastic dribbler and did outrageous skills that you'd never seen before. He was also so far ahead of field (think of how Usain Bolt dominated the 100m) in the 86 World Cup that even the worlds top defenders were shit scared of him. Don't think Messi has had that effect on the worlds top defenders. Ask the Argentianians who their greatest ever player is and most say Maradona, altho DM was from poverty, a street fighter who carried the Argentina spirit with him where as Messi was from a rich middle class family and doesnt encompass Argentina struggles in the same way. So there's a natural bias from Argentinians towards DM.

Not a good video to react to. This video cut short alot of good plays its showing and leaving out alot of what he can do. Trust me, find and watch a different highlight video on Maradona. You'll never look at another futballer the same way again.

Thisthe reason why i think Maradona is one of the 3 true legends of football, the other 2 being Pele & Ronaldo. I'm in my late 50s now, & back then, i tried to watch as much football as i can, especially when he was at Barca & Napoli. The only reason why Messi & Cristiano are not in the same league as Pele, Maradona & Ronaldo is bcoz them 2 never won the World Cup. No matter how many goals you scored, there's nothing like scoring in the WC and winning it. Maradona, Pele & Ronaldo literally carried the entire team and the hope of a nation on their shoulders. Maradona, the true legend of football

Pelé was my introduction to football. For me, he remains unmatched. Including friendlies unrecognized by FIFA, most of which were played against elite European sides, he scored 1279 goals - an average of >.9/match over a twenty year career (more on longevity in a moment). Three World Cup titles. The youngest Brazilian ever to score in a competitive international match. The youngest player in history to record a World Cup hat trick. Inventor of techniques and tricks later made famous by the likes of Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldinho, Zidane, and Messi. Became a global brand unto himself without the benefit of world wide broadcasts, 24 hour sports coverage, the internet, or social media. After the 1970 World Cup, his name and likeness were recognized by more people than were corporate brands like Coca Cola, McDonald's, and Disney. Criticized today for never playing club football in Europe. Irrelevant. In his day, like today, the best talent in the world came from South America. International transfers were rare and intercontinental transfers were nearly unheard of. Example: every player from Celtic's 1967 Lisbon Lions European Cup squad, was born within 25 miles of Celtic Park. When Pelé played in Brazilian club football and South American Continental tournaments, he was facing the best in the world. Back to longevity... With mid-twentieth Century training, medical technology, field conditions, and equipment, he played competitively for over twenty years. No one, including Messi, accomplished what he did for as long as he did it. In the end, it's not even a debate worth having. This doesn't detract from Messi's greatness or legacy. He is still easily the best player of his generation. But Edson Arantes do Nasciamento, known history as Pelé, was far better.

Im argentinian and i always ask my self who is better, D10S or Messi. My answer is.. Messi have more achievments, his stats are amazing, won everything. D10S dont have that, he won yeah, he carry his teams, and rules were way different, and if u know his history your hearth is fire, he is a flame, and his aura is still here. I love both, but D10S beside be a GOAT like messi or pelee was something else.
