Modern Indias complete identity is based on the Congress gaining independence for India from the British. India whose history is so old our identity could be anything, for us to have chosen this is a slap in the face of our ancestors. Instead of hating the Brits, a large number of us see them as liberators from the foreign religion of peace (cough cough - I don't want youtube deleting my comment by criticizing HISLAMB ). Our identity should be an Indian one, and all I read in our stupid text books is anti-western propaganda, this was a very short phase of Indian history, and also not nearly as bad as the genocidal conquest of the HISLAMBs, (Hindu Kush literally means slaughter of the Hindus - Ibn Batuta). Modern India is everything I hate all put into one, the worst of all worlds, for some reason we are too afraid to talk about our Hindu/ Buddhist history so as to not offend the minorities, well you wanna see what the minorities do when they are in the majority, look at any country west of us and tell me how many Zoroastrians you see in Persia today, or Christians in the Levant, Hindus/ Buddhists in Central Asia and Afganisthan or Hindus/ Buddhists in Pakisthan/ Bangladesh/ Indonesia, then tell me if HISLAMB is truly a religion of peace.

A fascinating snap shot of religions in place at the time - Buddhism vs Taoism vs Legalism(Confucianism) in China, Manicheanism and Zoroastrianism in Central Asia, Mahayana vs Theravada Buddhism vs various sects of Hinduism in India. The Judaism & Christian Assyrian Church of East of the Silk Road traders we know was across Central Asia is missing, and the discussion/conflict of both the 100 Schools in China and the Jains with other philosophies and religious sects in India seem ignored. But I am sure that was the writer's choice, since none of those were in power with kingdoms anywhere, unlike the ones mentioned in the story. Very good and even handed job of presentation of the monk's story! Kudos!

That King he promised to spend 3 years with but never did, perhaps that was the inspiration for the turtle that provided Xuanzang and his pilgrims passage across a river, requesting that when they reach their destination to ask the buddha of his fate. Later in the story, when the pilgrims are returning home, they come across the turtle again and he provides them a ride like before. However, when the turtle inquires about the favor, Xuazang completely forgot to ask about his faith and the turtle was so miffed about this that he tossed them out of his back and into the river. Considering the turtle was just a one-bit character that never appeared afterward until the very end, the reader probably forgot about him too.

Buddhism already introduced into Mainland China during West Han Dynasty era which is almost six to eight hundred years before the Tang Dynasty. When the Buddhism came, the traditional Chinese Taoism are having a great interest to study on it instead of seeing it as a foreign threat, and many of the Chinese scholar found the Buddhism thinking are quite match with the Chinese origin philosophy, later on it became the so called Buddha-Tao combination or Buddhism-Confucianism-Taoism Combination (佛道合一/三教合一) which also give a big influences to Japan Korea Vietnam etc until today. So Buddhism might origin from India but it gained it great development and expansion from China.

Xuanzang's journey took 17 years because he stopped at different schools to learn the language. There is a network of Buddhist learning centres where he could study Buddhism and the language. He also travelled with an entourage. So he probably picked up a few translators on his journey too.

What is the relationship between the Journey to the West and the Empresss Wu Zetian? She upgraded/restored the Wild Goose Temple in 704 AD. She was also a Buddhist. What was the relationship between this Empress and Confucianism, particularly Neo-Confucianism?

Same. The TV show was to long and the talking was way longer. Steven chow had a show where he make fun of wukong master by talking his captor to death. Death from boredom.
