This is one facet to the incredibly complex situation of human civilization with the level of technology we have opposed to level of evolution we've attained emotionally, etc. Until we get to a point where we can sustainably live on this planet with each other, these sorts of problems will be rampant. The only solutions I 'm able to envisage are far too simplistic, so I am committed to doing as little harm as possible, supporting other people, and doing as much good as I can. We're a mess, but I love us anyway.

It’s wild to me that procreating seems like it should be such a priority. After a huge population boom in the earlier part of last century we have steadily increased. But there is a finite amount of anything on the planet. We are we in such a hurry to use it up? I’m not saying we will run out but we are creating population related issues for ourselves faster than we can solve them. Trash. Waste, energy, economic status, education…. These are all things that have gotten harder to solve with systems being taxed by more people using them. And we can’t all move to places we don’t already live and eat bugs. Why keep populating if it means having to give up comforts technology has afforded us? It seems to me population shrinkage or leveling or just a cycle of it, is a natural progression of being social animals. We haven’t been recording things long enough to know if we will have a level out after the Industrial Revolution. We haven’t even had an Industrial Revolution long enough to know how it turns out. But we do know we have a lot of solving to do that throwing more kids at seems like a very short term solution to. Editing to add: if having kids should be a higher priority for folks in western nations, then why are we not focusing on making it so people feel they CAN have kids. A lot of people choosing not to have kids are more because they don’t feel able to care for them- not wholly for “selfish” career and pleasure related reasons.

the problem is that the western nations aren't the ones with huge increases

@@daradevlin4093 so the solution is to outbreed non-western nations? And actually- we did have a huge increase- in fact, we’ve tripled in the last 100 years. But we can’t expect the us to keep up with India or China. In fact that’s a problem that should be slowed, not competed against. Their problems resulting from strained systems affect the whole planet. But since that’s something solved politically, the next best solution is to make more people than them faster?

The harsh reality for women is that they are most fertile between 15 and 30 years, and most attractive to men at that age. So if they leave it till after education and career they may not have any babies and this seems to be a reality for many. Also the men who married in their 20's are no longer available to them, so the pot is emptying fast and maybe left with only the rejects.

If that were true the fertility rates of Iran and Arabia wouldn't be so low. Technology is more to blame.
