Funny you mention the whole 'you're not a real photographer if you're on KZitem' thing. Had this on my channel recently. Guy said bc I rarely show my work I must be 'hiding' something. Having worked as a professional photographer most of my adult life, I came to a point during C-19 where the studio was closed, and it got me to reconsider my career. I have always loved creating photographs, but the drive to do it professionally after 30 odd years wasn't there any more. This is totally different to being a 'failure' as some would have it. Just because one doesn't work actively in the professional scene doesn't make their knowledge less valid. Gut feeling is that this idea (of a YT photographer not being a 'real' photographer) has come from those channels that simply talk endlessly about gear. TL:DR - I'm happy passing on my knowledge/experience to those that enjoy it - Not really fussed if some 20 something 'pro tog' thinks I'm a 'failure'

Just up front, I love your channel and binge watch it all the time. It’s one of the reasons I started mine. There is far too much judgement from folks. I was shooting a career changing campaign last year whilst being called a fraud on KZitem haha. Interestingly, those who I learn from are not pro photographers for the most part. Keep going with your amazing channel. The content in genuinely amazing. Scott

@@TinHouseStudioUK Thanks, glad you enjoy it :D I've made no bones that I am a full time KZitemr. Always had a desire to lecture/teach photography, and this platform allows me to share what I learnt both at photo school and out in the world. It's great. In the past 18 months I've connected with photography and other photographers in a way that totally reignited my passion for the medium. This would never have happened if I'd been in my studio 6 days a week being a 'real' photographer. No doubt you've experienced similar.

You're channel has some really cool big picture stuff about photography. I could honestly care less about your own personal photography skills, because the stuff you present is so interesting, and I don't think anyone else is doing anything quite like it.

I follow your channel and Peter Coulson (Aussie fashion photographer) and find the difference between genuine professional photography content and KZitem influencer style photography to be night and day in terms of learning opportunities.... most KZitem sellers , sorry influencers, are dead set on convincing me that this weeks latest drone is must have kit... whereas here I am picking up on technique, business tips, styling tips and working equipment realities. There is a very clear distinction, its just a shame the two have become so intertwined

100% correct! When I was just getting into photography I found the influencers first but gradually left watching their videos because I don’t care about the latest camera. I want to learn how to light shit, how to interact with my subjects, how a commercial shoot actually works, etc. those are now the people I watch.

I think that we should all follow a range of professionals on YT. If you follow one, you may copy one, but if you follow many, you are more likely to take a collection of ideas and develop your own unique mix - your own style. I have only recently discovered this channel and its a vast and interesting view at bright and bold colors, quite different from PC's black and white fashion/model images. I love and have subscribed to both.

KZitem is a weird one. You can post great content that really helps people and get a few hundred hits. Or a dancing squirrel on a old Nokia at 480p and get millions. This is marvellously democratic and deeply depressing at the same time.

KZitem is a mixed bag of everything. Some are real working photographers and some are people that have not made it. For the ones that have not made it I don't think they should give a lot of business advice like they are some kind of super marketing person. Others are just hobbyist and just do KZitem for fun and others just want to be KZitemrs and just picked photography. The problem most people don't understand about photography and going pro is that their are two different jobs you have to master the art of photography and the marketing of photography.

I don't mind that photographers have a youtube channel. There are photographers that run a KZitem Channel but they are not photographers in my opinion. They are gear reviewers and have a team around them to create content. Any questions are then answered with lies. I remember one particular reviewer explaining and telling everyone that he/she is using the Sony 50/1.2 for his/her work only. A few weeks down the road there was no word anymore about this new Sony 50/1.2 and that older 50/1.4 was put in front of the camera body. You are not trying to sell something in the first place via youtube. You just tell what works for you and what doesn't. I like that. It makes you very authenic.

Why do you feel that you have to justify anything? Many great photographers share their work and workflow on KZitem, there's absolutely no shame being on KZitem, stop trying to be elitist. And the industry doesn't look down on people that are on KZitem, what a ridiculous thing to say.

You earn my admirations for recognizing that there is a time to quit and persue things. In my view, just reposting ideas or videos on fstoppers, be it your own but especially of others (as does one particular individual on fstopper whose name I will not mention), diminishes your values more than being a photographer youtuber.

This is so relevant. Im getting a bit tired of these KZitem supposed content creators. Hardly any of them have made a 'proper' living out of a camera. I know you don't necessarily think that way, maybe I'm a bit more cynical. You, Seth Miranda Karl Taylor are three of the pro KZitemrs I follow.

For me many (about 95%) KZitemrs photographers are like famous pop-romantic singers "lots of love in the songs" but their lives are full of divorces. Therefore, photography becomes a profitable attractive topic that sells well. Just like love.

I follow many professional photographers on KZitem and I don't think being a full time or even a part time KZitemr diminishes their photography. Other than those Landscape photographers ... I don't know how those folks make a living with or without KZitem! 😂 Obviously I jest! I'm not a pro photographer but I am a professional artist and early on I learned to diversify my work so I had many revenue streams. I was so good at it I very rarely do any art now that I am into my 30th year as a software developer! 😕 Be that as it may I do think doing something like KZitem or teaching makes us examine our profession and I really think we get better at whatever we do if we are able to teach someone else how to do it. Granted if your KZitem content was just flogging gear then I might have a different opinion but most of the pros I follow are not doing that.

That is absolutely stupidity for someone to assume that anyone is a bad photographer because they have a KZitem channel. It is actually smart to have multiple streams of income, so that one stream doesn't effect the other and you have more choices on how you live your life. Nothing makes this more apparent than Covid-19. When almost nothing or no one was moving. It the photographer with a long range plan that includes an online and KZitem presence that will survive long-term and prosper at an extreme level, not just live, but prosper enough to leave a legacy behind.

Hey Scott whats your take on the new Instagram changes? As a newcomer to the photo space, I am... sort baffled by the amount of photographers responding to changes in shock and horror... as though they didn't see the rise of tiktok, or as though as creatives we can't adapt. Is the outrage justified? I can't help but feel like the same people saying they're jumping ship from IG are the same people so resistant to change that they complained about moving to IG and they 1:1 ratio. Is there a controversy to be had? Am I wrong for thinking this? Is it genuinely bad for photographers?

If I understand the issue correctly it is that IG has decided photography really has no place on their platform and are rewarding those who create reels. I think the criticism is absolutely fair, many photography business' have built their business, brand and community on IG and its basically over. The rug has literally been pulled out from under them But like all things, if your model is built around that content you have to adapt or its over
@usernamehandle

@@road2nowhere733 With all due respect, I can't help but feel thats an unfair characterization. Father forgive me for defending facebook, but last year they said it was "no longer a photo sharing app," and yet it's still been THE tool for photographers to show their work. People are freaking out about the change to 9:16 saying its the death of photography... but many also freaked out about 1:1 saying the same (despite 1:1 being an extremely important format for decades before IGs inception). Did we also forget portrait formats are called portrait formats because of portraits? Is IG ruining careers and community? All my local photogs and models rely on IG to connect and get work. That won't end with this update. Might push them to explore video (which GOOD, they should, because that's where the world is), but even if they don't explore video, they'll be where the people are. What ruins the platform is the algorithm, limited discoverability, spam and bot accounts, content theft, lack of options for uploading efficiently. Not saying don't use other platforms, or don't hate IG, but the IG hate for these specific changes seems misdirected at least, out of touch at most. Maybe I'M out of touch, but I've heard more about IG exposing careers than ruining them. Am I wrong? Are photographers actually being hurt by these changes or the fact that a dog pic or butt shot performs better than a masterful landscape? Talk about butt hurt lol zing. Jk. I just see people swapping to Twitter and I'm wondering... what do you think people mostly use twitter for? Arguing, news, video, and NSFW. Much of the art community found that out years ago when Tumblr legit ruined their platform, and folks transitioned there. It truly has some great uses, animators get jobs mostly there nowadays. But the running gag (no pun intended) is that nsfw art is what sells there. I guess I just find it difficult to hold recent changes responsible when they seem like nonissues. Esp compared to issues that have been long developing, much larger, and seem to have a more direct impact on photog success across EVERY platform.
