They say right at the start we work because we need to pay bills and that's understandable. But what they're asking is why do we often work much more than we need to - not why do we work at all. Just worth pointing out, some people have a job and still have ended up using food banks. The school of life is meant to be about mental wellbeing, but it never mentions the effect of poverty on mental wellbeing? Also, a lot of work is unpaid. For example, I have spent my days off work for the last couple of years helping care for and support my bedbound, terminally ill mum. Before that, when my son was younger, I was doing everything for him as a single mum on days off work. Family carers don't labour because of a fear of stillness but because children and elderly/disabled people really need support! So whilst I have occasionally kept myself busy due to the reasons described in the video, 99% of the time it is paid work to get cash or family work because I love my family!

I think a lot of people are missing the point or the target of this video. It doesn't talk about the reason why someone stays in an unhappy job or why someone who does not want to work is forced to do so. This, I think is more relatable to people who have always tried to follow the social norm of getting good grades, learning a skill (might be something they genuinely like or have been told all their live that they should learn), get a good job, keep climbing the ladder util you retire. This, is a small glimpse of what that existential dread after the retirement might feel like. Maybe.

I'm not afraid of the stillness, I'm afraid of the bills, joking aside, life is work, for survival in itself is work, and the work we do can be stressful, but they also can be relaxing, it depends on what type of work you wanna do or what you wanna achieve with it, if we dont try to do the work, well never achieve anything, we wont learn anything new from giving up, and it depends on life and on what you can do, in the end your stuck in life where everyone wants survive or worse wants to rule the world, but those that dont want to work, usually end up achieving nothing. and the nothing, is the thing that everyone is truly afraid of.

This reminds me of a line I heard in the Sopranos. _'Madame de Staël said "In life, one must choose between boredom and suffering."_ I think people who are compelled to achieve and move, mostly do so because whatever suffering is inflicted by burning oneself out with constant work is just that much better than the boredom of doing nothing. It then becomes an addiction to momentum and progress, and at that point it will either cement this behaviour as a pathology, making it a permanent part of the person's behavioural gambit, or it will make them flip out and rebel against it.

What I digest from this video are 7 points that can each be debated as individual premises to the conclusion of the video. 1. We have a 'necessity to work' for various reasons. 2. We are adopting these reasons in adolescence from authoritative figures older than ourselves that we are not mature enough to challenge. 3. We sometimes allow the perception of the 'necessity to work' to prevent self care. A belief system is forming and dogma leads us so far as to actively "avoid" self care. We are self-neglecting because we are choosing to work out of necessity, thus it is necessary to choose to self-neglect. 4. There is a conflict between the voices within us and the voices without us, i.e. what we truly, personally, desire is self care but this contrasts with what is being taught to us from external sources regarding the 'necessity to work' and to be defined by achievements from said work. But, importantly, the internal voice still "murmurs" on. 5. We also make active personal choices not to engage with the self caring external sources that contrast with the other authoritative external sources because the belief system and dogma forms a barrier to such engagements (e.g. poetry - Omar Khayyam, a fantastic poet might I add!) 6. Similar to the above, given we are neglecting ourselves, we also cannot find solitude in 'the night' or to be alone with our minds. This is due to the notion that actively giving oneself the capacity for reflection may reveal some uncomfortable truths that we are unsure of how to act upon ("where we might need to go and what might need to be discarded" or facing "sadness and regret" and so on as various "because..." reasons are presented). 7. The video concludes by saying resistance (war) is easier than acceptance (peace) of oneself, and that the "real work might lie elsewhere" with an image of a psychotherapist's chair and couch - The School of Life's 'About' section on their channel states "All our content is available on our app and website: www.theschooloflife.com. We offer online psychotherapy: www.theschooloflife.com/therapy." Please note, you need to subscribe to the website to access full articles, including the one that contains further reading for this video. I have my own opinions on each of these premises but I would be keen to hear what others think and lean towards debating. I thought for a 2min video that was quite rich and deep in content! Thank you for the video

0:44 "Because we have no idea how to let anyone know us outside of our achievements; because it seems inconceivable that we have any value beyond what we do" To be fair, part of the blame is on us for not focusing on the inside, but the other part is on the environment for stimulating that kinda behavior (people only ask "What do you do?" or "What do you want to do?" , but not "Who are you?" or "Who do you want to be?" ). We're human beings, not "human doings".

For everyone thinking that this video is about working or not at all: it's not, it's about our attitude to work. It's about us liking to be busy a bit too much and taking ourselves too seriously, not knowing what to ask from a psychopath system. Technically, there's shortage of labour everywhere in the world now, and the more we age, the fewer people will be working. At the same time, workers will feel discouraged from pursuing employment and will try to make a living of some real skills they have, working whenever they want. But that's also when there'll be enough unrest between people and violence and war will gear up. Stand up to your governments and stand by the owners of the businesses you're working for to give everyone a decent living by easing off fiscal pressure and allowing people to work less time for a dignifying remuneration so as to give everyone a chance to work. Few men can't do all the work, there's room for everyone.

Healthy self-esteem is a stable, inherent sense of worth. In contrast, low self-esteem or shame creates feelings of inadequacy and fear, often leading to depression. This depression can be overt or covert, the latter masked by busyness and the pursuit of achievement, driven by societal conditioning that replaces genuine self-worth with performance-based esteem. Covert depression is widespread but often goes unrecognized, hidden behind constant productivity and the need to prove oneself. True self-worth, however, comes from within and should not depend on external validation. Understanding covert depression involves recognizing our intrinsic worth, which is not tied to performance. When we feel unconditionally loved and worthy, we are more likely to extend that graciousness to others. This message does not condemn action or achievement but encourages us to pause and consider whether we are striving to prove our worth unnecessarily or are motivated by something deeper.

Really glad to see that I myself have come to this conclusion trying to explain the underlying reason for this incessant rat race. No doubt, we prefer day to day work in an effort to avoid delving into the dark mystery of our existence, we find solace in achieving attainable goals since we are at a loss to conceive the true purpose,if any, of our short term life. Everything we do is wisely done, albeit unconsciously, to evade the fear of death. We keep playing games in a virtual reality in that we are unable to come to grips with the tragic nature of human life.

No, the reason why I work hard is that I'd like to wrap things up. I know how the companies collapse and go bankrupt. So, I'd like to do my best to keep my current status. And my retirement is coming nearer as well. I won't leave any regrets when I retire.

This video titled "The Real Reason We Work So Hard" presents a thought-provoking analysis of the deeper psychological and emotional factors that drive our intense work habits. Here are the key takeaways: 1. Surface-level reasons: We work hard due to financial necessities and responsibilities. 2. Deeper motivations: The transcript suggests that beyond practical reasons, there are more complex psychological factors at play. 3. Fear of stillness: Many people work excessively to avoid confronting their inner thoughts and emotions. 4. Self-worth tied to achievement: There's a belief that our value is primarily derived from our accomplishments. 5. Distraction from inner turmoil: Work serves as a respectable way to avoid dealing with personal fears and anxieties. 6. Early conditioning: Our work habits may be influenced by learned behaviors and fears instilled in childhood. 7. Difficulty with introspection: Many struggle with self-reflection and engaging with their inner selves. 8. Avoidance of uncertainty: Work provides structure and purpose, helping to avoid the discomfort of uncertainty and open-ended questions. 9. Emotional avoidance: Intense work can be a way to escape from dealing with difficult emotions like sadness and regret. 10. Lack of meaningful connections: The absence of deep friendships or emotional support may drive people to focus more on work. 11. Comfort in busyness: Many find it easier to stay busy than to confront the challenges of finding peace and stillness. 12. Misplaced priorities: The transcript suggests that "real work" might lie in addressing these underlying issues rather than in conventional productivity. This analysis invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with work and explore the emotional and psychological factors that may be driving their behavior.

Some people find their reason to exit through their professional career, other just work because money and some others are really free like that poetry analogy mentioned in the video but we are all tied in this modern mess full with greed and lack of empathy towards each other where companies push to excel but dont pay enough to have a decent life quality

This is a very timely video for me. I recently read "Vita Contemplativa" by Byung-Chul Han. I feel like the SOL is always reading my mind or on some kind of parallel journey with me.

I'm either in a constant state of busyness or I become inert and/or platonic, even with things I enjoy. :/

I think to a degree this situation isnt just work. Its the same reason we go on social media all day or binge television or do drugs. Stillness can be scary

I would say its also very much a possibility that you work hard because you actually like or even love what you do

Sadly, what I fear is poverty and inestability: the watermarks of my childhood. That's why I work so hard to not lose my job, but not hard enough to excel in it. Thats why I fight to escape work as soon and as often as possible, why I procrastinate so much, and why I feel so bad about it after. I love doing things on my own, and I don't like being "still" either. I prefer to do my own stuff, from writting to petting my cats or watching movies or practicing taichi. But I don't fear being with myself. I just fear being unsafe, adrift in the randomness of life ever again.

I believe we live in 'an achievement society' where class conflict has been internalised . where we are both the boss and the slave forever optimising ourselves. Byung-Chul Han has alot to say about this.

These comments are so interesting. People disagreeing because there are bills to pay completely proves Alain's point that the real point of our busyness is pointless. We are in a billionaire's hamster wheel. I love stillness when I want for nothing and am part of everything. I don't feel lonely either. That's the inner work that capitalism has taken from us: quality over quantity. And that's why our democracies are dying, G*no cide is allowed to happen, and our climate is breaking down. Money.
