My favorite version of The Little Mermaid was in a handmade book I bought at an art museum. It's the only version I read when the mermaid really wanted to kill the prince. She was furious that she had given up everything to be with him to see him marry another woman. There wasn't a doubt in her mind that he deserved to die. But, here's the great part, she didn't change her mind because she loved him too much & didn't want to kill him. She changed her mind because she realized that it wasn't his fault. She's the one that gave her life away. It wasn't his fault, & he had been nothing but nice to her. This was her mess, & it wasn't his job to clean it up. So when she died, she was happy to join the Sisters of the Air, & I think it's a much better ending than the prince marrying her, or even her killing the prince & going back to live in the ocean. She had already seen the ocean & the land, now she could explore the skies & space instead of being tied down to mortal life.

What really got me about Marina was the scene where she was human and the maid was bathing her and she complimented the flower in Marina's hair and without hesitation Marina takes it out of her hair and tries to give it to the maid. That flower was what she waited for her whole life, it meant she could explore the ocean freely and when she got it she was so excited. And just like that she selflessly wanted to give it to the maid she only knew for a few hours.

@rallitas11q

The original story was that she fell in love with the prince and saved him from drowing but he thought it was this other girl who saved him. Then the mermaid got legs under the conditions of having no voice and if the prince would marry someone else then the mermaid would die and turn into sea foam the very next day at sunrise. The prince marries the girl that he thought saved him from drowning (when it was infact it was really the mermaid who saved him). The mermaid spent that night crying because the prince married someone else and she's about to die when the sun rises the next morning. Then she has the choice to live if she kills the prince with a knife but it has to be done before sunrise. She goes to his room when he is sleeping and is about to kill him with the knife but she stops herself and she can't do it because she loves him (they were in a boat) and at sunrise turns into sea foam. The prince ran out when he found out she was about to jump into the water (they were friends still so he still tried to save her) and he saw her die then he realized it was actually her who saved him in the first place.

in fact, she doesn't spend all night crying because the prince married someone else. In little mermaid's true story, she spend all night pretending to be happy and dancing, despite the sorrow that she was feeling!

True. And sadly he didn't see her turn into to foam. she threw herself into the sea while he was still sleeping. And when they awoke, they only thought the foam meant she had jumped and drowned. So he never realized who she really was :(

that's true! he never knew what really happen, and he never knew that she was the on who saved him! that's sad, at least, in real story, little mermaid doesn't turn into foam, because of her kindness she become in a daughter of the air! so she can get a eternal soul (like humans have) after 300 of good deeds! I really like the ending of little mermaid, because she doesn't marry with the prince, but she protect him for the rest of her existence n.n

There is another version that has a happy ending. She is told she has to murder the prince by her sisters. However, when she refuses to do so she is transformed into a spirit of the air. The other Air Spirits tell her that her caring heart saved her from becoming nothing more then foam on the sea. She is told that if she does good deeds, like they strive to do, then when the end of the world comes she will be able to enter heaven.

If it is based on H.C. Andersen's original story then the little Mermaid did not kill himself, but turns into foam, which was a part of hers and the sea-witch agreement. Here is an excerpt from Hans Christian Andersen's original story "The Little Mermaid; "The first morning after he marries another your heart will break, and you will become foam on the water." ***** I was very young when I saw this version and ended up watching the Disney version afterward. My family is Danish decent and my parents had their reasons for reading me the book of Hans Christian Andersen and showing me the more truthful animated film. Not gonna lie...I shed plenty of tears on experiencing both the book and the movie for the first time as most any child would. The Disney version however helped me get a better positive look on The Little Mermaid story, including my parents believe it or not. I don't hold anything against my mom or dad for wanting me to know the original story first nor do I have any regrets about learning about it regardless of the book and films truthful & sad outcome.

I had a massive storybook filled with fairy tales (stories like the little match girl) and when I was about around 7 I found The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson in it. So, I started to read the story expecting it to be like the Disney version (I thought the basic plot would be the same), only that wasn't what I found. I was so mad that he never knew it was her and married that other girl! I was crying at the end. Now, I absolutely adore the story, though I hated it when I first read it.

Another tid bit to blow your minds. Hans Christian Anderson wrote this as a love story, for a man he was in love with. The man he loved married a woman. from what I remember, she was already given a soul, for refusing to take a life to save her own. she becomes a zefir, sister of the air instead of returning to the sea as foam, which is what mermaids usually do. she knew from the start that if she couldn't get prince to love her romantically, she would die. she accepted it, it was her sisters that couldn't bear losing her, they were the ones who went to sea witch again (who wasn't evil btw). the only way for her to survive was to kill the prince

At all. Read the original fairytale guys. This is the story of every person's unrequited love. We go out of our way to shower them with care and love but only to be ignored and taken advantage of in the end. Some of us even decide to forgo a part our identity for love, after realizing we'll never find someone like that ever again. Life wasn't kind to some people, so we had to play by their rules or not play at all.

I love the true story of the Little Mermaid, because it shows that she really cared for the prince. In the Disney version, Ariel doesn't have to make a huge decision. She will either marry the prince or won't, in this it's marry him or die. I'd like to see any of the Disney princesses have to go through any of the troubles that the characters in fairy tales actually have.

The original Hans Christian Anderson story of The Little Mermaid is even darker. In that, the witch cuts out the mermaid's tongue to make the magic potion, which means she's unable to speak, and although she has human legs she's unable to walk on them, so she's basically a crippled, mute human when the prince finds her. Which means he only ever feels pity for her rather than true love, and that's why he falls for the other girl. Can't imagine Disney putting all that in feelgood songs...

“Destiny by Neja” I tried to find who is singing this song, I found the artist and searched for the song but I found the guitar version (not the piano version that was used for this video).

I didn't find out this story was about loss until read it when I was older. I don't know why disney decieved us so, this was such a beautiful tragedy. This girl gave up eternal life for love, and it was unrequited in the end - even when she was given a second chance at returning to her family by killing the person she loved she chose to sacrifice herself. However, it was still a happy ending because she didn't die and become sea foam, becuase of her sacrifice she gained a soul.

I saw this when I was either 9 or 10. I saw it at a Video Store and wanted to see it. Now many people are saying that its all the Prince's fault that Marina died. Well I can see why since well he said to Marina since he can't find the Girl with black Hair and wants to marry her and then when he does find the Black Hair girl he ignores Marina dropping the mirror in heart break. Yeah those were dick moves but he had no way of knowing that with the Spell that Marina took to become human would cause her to turn to Foam if he marries another. Nor did he know that she was in lots of pain on every step she took when ever she walked. So yeah. It was not completely his fault but I did not like how he said to Marina he would marry her since he can't find the other Girl and then takes it back once he did find that Girl.

And you should keep in mind that she was only 15, and to her it looked like the sailor were playing a game, unlike the prince who was unconscious in the ocean. She had little comprehension that humans couldnt swim as well as her, but understood that they needed air to breath. the others were floating and were managing to stay above water as well as conscious. While she was more than a little selfish in that she wanted to see him live, she did so thinking the rest would be safe and live as well.

ah I remember this. Her 16 bday allowed to go to the sufface feel in love gave up the sea and her voice to find him just to see him fall for the girl that found him at the beach so he attributed her to saving him. Sisters found her on the ship with the prince said witch gave her her voice back (blond mermaid) and that she could return if she killed him. Couldn't do it, jumped into the sea but was granted a human soul and in essence "died". was so sad but awesome!

In the Pilipino version, the Little Mermaid is a half girl and half bangus. She fell in love with a prince, but the prince marries another woman and in the end the little mermaid (half girl and half bangus) died. When the prince found out that the little mermaid (half girl and half bangus) was the really the one who saves him, he felt anger! He was very angry and he drove the girl he married away. Since the girl he married was a witch, she cast a spell to the prince and the prince turned into a beast. The spell can only be broken if he could find a girl that will love him even if he is now physically ugly. So he kidnap and old man so that the old mans daughter (Bell) would agree to stay in his castle. for 2 months he seduces Bell. and when Bell finally fell in love with the prince.... well the rest is history...

@SuperMusicalFlower Let's not forget the girl was actually Ursala, the witch, who was trying to go back on her side of the deal by preventing Eric from kissing Ariel. Kids were already supposed to hate the witch because of all her interference, and so trying to marry the prince just helped.
