Thomas Duel grew up in Chicago's Lawndale community and became deeply involved in Chicago's gang life. This path would him to being convicted of murder at 20 years old in 2000. While in prison, he wanted to improve as a person and this would result in him embracing the religion of Islam. He would eventually take his shahdah and change his name to Abdul-Wakil. Inspired by the Hadith of the man who once killed 99 people but who continuously sought Allah's forgiveness, the Black Dawah Network has launched the Uplift Your Brother initiative in collaboration with the Muslims of Stateville Correctional Facility and Menard Correctional Facility.
The Uplift Your Brother Initiative is spearheaded by young Black men who are serving life sentences for alleged gang-related murders and who subsequently transformed themselves after taking their shahadah in prison, and who are now determined to help others from their communities rise above the traps that can result in early death or a lengthy prison sentence.
