I agree! It really depends on how much effort and thinking goes into the sample. If it's chopped and/or sampled in a way that it's something completely new (Face to Face), it's different than basically just interpolating 80% of the song and changing nothing but the lyrics (I'm Good (Blue)). Then you have the latter, but it's actually executed well because there's a new element brought to the interpolation, or it's used in a way it wasn't before (Can't Touch This, NWA's Express Yourself, Kanye's Good Life, Lil Boo Thang, etc).

The thing is, Daft Punk have sampled old 70s/80s disco, funk, and soul songs and somehow managed to make them sound like their own, they’d cut out certain parts of the song and replace them and would end up recreating everything from scratch. House and old school rap are a great example of how awesome and creative sampling can really be.

I used to love the old hip hop samples because, at the very least, they were a mindful and zesty interpretation of the original song. My theory with an artist like Kanyé is ppl are mostly hypnotized by his work because of how fantastically he samples old school music and infuses it into hip-hop. Nowadays newer songs with samples tend to be uninspired and unimaginative. That Nicki ‘Super Freak’ song gave off such a carbon copy vibe. When this happens, the opposite effect of what the artist wants occurs, making me want to forget their new single exists, rushing back to the original to cleanse my palette. I felt this way, too, big time about Latto’s “Big Energy.” Geesh. This might all be subjective but I honestly think the tradition and quality of sampling has gone down overall. If you’re gonna use someone’s else’s ish, make it worth our time!

"Buliding the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing" - Solid Snake, MGS2 Nothing has ever been original the way I see it, after all it's a part of who we are, we make something, it influences someone to make something like it and the cycle repeats, things don't just appear out of thin air. Like for example, rock n roll (which was originally a slang term for sex) was influenced by black music like blues, and artists like Kurt Cobain, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Queen used to be influnced by artists like Jimi hendrix and Little Richard, who was a mentor to the beatles. And they were very influential as a result, influencing artists like Gorrilaz, Radiohead, Tame impala and many many more. Sampling is no different and artists also sampled in their music back then, it was called musique concrete, artists like The Beatles utilized it on their songs before, and sampling is the modern day concept of that, we take sounds and turn it into a new, unique thing. Of course this doesn't happen all the time with people like Diddy and Dj Khaled being a thing and the current state of sampling and music in general at a all time low, but that doesn't mean that music is dead and we should all just stop listening to it, what you need to do is broaden your horizons, you can't keep listening to the same thing over and over again and hear one song that isn't what you listen to and say music is dead because of ONE song, but humans are stubborn in nature sooo... If you want to hear the music you want to hear, then why not actually try something new for once? Lil Yachty made a psychadelic rock album earlier this year and jack harlow made a album that was really good (to me of course) and it's like i'm the only person on the internet who remembers them, I haven't seen anyone else talk them anywhere, it's like everybody wants to be the same, want to have the same music taste. Sampling exists for a reason, we sample because it's fun, we have no access to other kinds of instruments, which is one of the reasons why hip hop became a thing, to try different ways of making music, after all you can't keep using the guitar forever, you gotta try something new, and most importantly, to reintroduce these things to a new generation, because it's human nature to pass down things from one another, it's what makes us who we are, if we didn't do that, then who are we then? "There are just not memories of the past. There are also memories of today and tomorrow." - Lain, Serial Experiments Lain Everything is a cycle, always has been, so there will always be people criticizing others for what they do, so (idk how many years from) there will always be the older generation criticizing the newer generation, whether it be games, music, movies or whatever, and of course there will always be people making the things you want to watch, play or listen to, it's humanity after all, so when this year becomes a long time ago, there will always be humans being influenced by what was being made in this year, the past and the future, so this generation will be sampling by what they were was listening to in this year and the next will do the same and the next for years to come. That Lil Yachty album and many more are obscure for now, but when the day comes when someone finds that record or another and samples it for their next song, people are going to be introduced to something they didn't hear before, and are going to sample it/be influenced by it for their next work and the cycle repeats. "Understand the beginning to be the end and nothing is in between but space and time that I make, or you make, to relate, or not to relate, to the world outside my mind, your mind." - The Last Poets, When the Revolution Comes

Thank you for the video. I appreciate you! Much love! :-) I totally agree on all you said and that it does shed light on the older artist so that this generation and furthermore can hear and listen to them. However I’m sort of tired of the “NO” real discovery of taking the risk of being creative. I like when you sit just really create “new music” that is truly your own! And most times those artist that are not big never get the time of day to be in the spotlight or some label ends up using their song and sometimes not giving the original artist credit. Also, think that now a days my millennial and gen x (if not)…please take a course on or google MUSIC HISTORY because that will educate the heck out of you. I just dislike when say that a new artist…no that artist has been around for years it’s just you did not two seconds to google the name and be like ohhhhh snap they been in the game for a hot minute. And also challenge people to create a song…I did that for a project in college or these music camps they have and just have fun. Overall, I think you see in Hollywood that it’s sort recycling itself and it’s so so true! So maybe let’s get some originality and some creativity back.

I don’t listen to the radio much nowadays, and when I do, it’s mostly those “best hits of the 80s, 90s and todays” channels, because the pop and Top 40 are constantly playing back-to-back Taylor Swift and the hip-hop and R&B stations, all of their music is just my music from the 90s, but bad. They even sample stuff that was already sampled, like Mariah Carey’s Fantasy and Mario Winan’s I Don’t Wanna Know

As someone who creates music, I really do want a second chance for a melody or a rhythm. I am not against that. It would be nice if I get some compensation for the work I do.
