I confess, I like a clean palette, but I don't like to waste paint either. So when I feel the urge to clean I use the paint on my mixing area to practice new or difficult techniques on the back of failed paintings because I don't like to waste paper either.

I'm more Type A, but when I first saw your "messy" palette in your beginning videos, I felt this freedom inside of me... for lack of a better word. Up until then, I was worried about keeping my colors clean and separate and I felt like, in some way, you gave me permission, to not worry so much and to let things be. Thank you!!

My day job is engineering, so very, Very, VERY type A. I'm always amazed (but not disturbed) when I see artists working with "unclean" palettes. They really don't seem "unclean" to me, just cluttered. If I'm working on a project for several days, I won't clean my palette, just in case I need one more little swipe of a mix I made. But when the project's done, I love wiping the mixing area totally clean. Ahhhhhhh! 😌

After using acrylics for decades one of the best parts of watercolors is NOT having to clean my pallet or waste so much paint! Although I have a touch of type A in that I try to keep my wells of tube paint or pans of paint, depending on which I’m using, fairly clean or “pure”. I rarely dip into multiple colors without rinsing or wiping my brush first. 😊

I used to clean my palette, when I was younger and didn’t know any better. It was so freeing when I realized I was wasting time and paint, and it was completely unnecessary. Even when I packed my art supplies for a move, I shoved my dirty palette covered with dried paint into a box, as is. By the way, I hope you turn that circle painting into a pattern. It would be gorgeous printed on silk!

Started out very type “A” now I’m much more relaxed, my work space is somewhat small, so I have several smaller palettes depending on what colors I want. If I really need clean areas to mix I either use small soap dishes from the dollar store. It’s works for now.

I'm generally more of a type B person, but I do keep my palettes clean. The reason I do it is because I am just a beginner, and I need to learn and understand what I'm doing (like color theory) first. I am too frugal to wash any paint down the drain. I have never cleaned a palette. I will use up colors intentionally making a clean well to make room for a new color. This little rule of mine forces me to try colors arbitrailly where I may not have placed them in my painting before, and it is an awesome little discovery. I also like having the options of all the colors there waiting. Thanks for sharing your explanation!

When I'm doing watercolors, a lot of it is character illustration, so my colors need to be really consistent when I'm coloring the same characters over and over and over again. Because of that, I do need to periodically clean my pallette, or else I risk muddying the colors that make up elements I want to look consistent (like skin and hair color, or an iconic outfit someone wears.)

HulloJenna, I keep a mostly cleaner palette for watercolors. I do not wash it clean after each use as I also like to use colors that have already been mixed and they do not go bad(Watercolor paints) If I no longer have a space for mixing I may use a rag or paper towel to clean a spot or three so I have room for mixing new fresh lighter colors. I also make use of additional plates or ceramic dishes to mix up lighter colors to keep darker mixes from contaminating yellows or bright pinks ! I hope your doing well and staying safe! I am enjoying your Everyday Watercolor Flower book. I do believe some of your subscribers might like an insight into one or two of your chapters to get them interested, perhaps enough to buy a copy of their own? Just an idea, Have a lovely day!

I don’t think 🤔 of your palette as being messy because you relatively have the colors kind of separated but with some blending colors too. I leave lots of leftovers on my palettes too. I want preface this by saying that what other people do to create art is none of my business and everyone should do whatever it takes to keep them going in their creative process. You do you, my opinion should not matter in any capacity. With that said, it bothers me because almost every single person I see with a messy watercolor palette also acts like they will literally die if they use any mixed pigment paint. And a lot of those people are weirdly snobby about it? If your palette looks like that, you are not using any pure pigment. Ever. Also, I don't know how much paint everyone is using, but I barely ever have any leftover on my mixing palette when I am done with a painting? Are y'all just wilding it and not considering the amount of leftovers you will have? Kindfully, and respectfully, dirty palettes look like they are covered in mold and gross me out, and I am not a germaphobe at all and my closet most likely looks like yours. I truly do not understand, but, it is also not for me to understand what inspires and drives other people to make art.

😂 Definitely type A I have a few palettes with the same colours squeezed out in the same order so I can work on separate projects at the same time. So happy to hear you do use separate small palates as needed bc I end up with a lot of very similar colors after awhile & haven’t quite worked out how to prevent that when using one big palate. I ordered a a pair of 10 well ceramic palates so I can have one for warm and one for cool. Thank you for your videos. My leaves are looking better than I ever imagined.

I don’t ever clean mine unless I am out of space to mix a colour I want, which happens sometimes when I have been doing lots of reds and it creeps into the space I normally mix yellows. Then I just clean a small section to do that. I have cools on one side and mostly warm, plus purple on the other. The purple is next to the pinks and the yellows are at the other end of the warms just to avoid mud. I have a tiny section for neutrals too but it isn’t really big enough. One of these days when I can make more room on my desk I will get a bigger palette. But I would say I am a mix between type A & B. I like to be organised but I also don’t sweat it too much if they aren’t and that especially goes for my watercolour palettes. I am also the only person in my family who doesn’t have ADHD so I have had to let go of tidy! 😆 That said it is becoming a little more within reach since our eldest moved out. I do use a separate pallet for *messy* things, like mixing metallic or another medium with watercolour as not everything needs sparkles (or maybe they do?). Generally, my main pallet only gets washed by lifting out muddy bits I don't like with a damp cloth. Art actually helps me to let go of my type A personality a little bit. My son however, his pallet, his room etc are all total chaos. Doesn't get it from me! Lol
