"But feeling good is not the work." So many great points made here. I'll also say that (even though this example is likely less common) there could be examples where someone is showing how they feel irl rather than telling the internet void how they feel about a topic. Like they may not have posted a flag or a black screen on insta, but they went to a protest. They may not have made a tweet, but they donated money to an organization helping. They may not have made a TikTok about it, but they went out and volunteered. There is more to activism than social media posts (preaching to the choir here ofc lol). Someone's social media account isn't them wholly. So even though I think this example might not be the most common, I'm sure that there are some cases where an influencer (or celeb) gets yelled at for not telling their audience how they feel about a political issue on social media, but they show it when they close the apps and/or step outside.

The more things change the more they stay the same. My parents grew up during apartheid and they did everything to not get involved in politics. For survival as black people, they were not willing to risk everything like the activists. And as guilty as they felt, it was the best thing for them to keep their heads down and only protesting some of time. When they felt it was safer to do so. Life is hard, and we are not all built the same. They were not about that life. We praise those who risked it all for us but not everyone could.

So well said Evelyn! Even though I’m not an influencer, I’ve recently been grappling with the same ideas. Why is it so important for my favorite influencer to speak out on political issues when their content has literally been makeup tutorials until this point? I don’t know tbh. Something to chew on.
@zucchinigreen

Cause we think we can achieve morals through consumption vs action. Because we're a consumerist society. I've been disappointed with celebrities and influencers for not speaking up on certain issues as a black woman, but I also know the media I consume doesn't always have to align with my politics for me to like it. I can appreciate what it is for what it is, and clearly notice when influencer wokeness is performative or not. I think Jackie Aina does a great job of supporting political issues and staying in her lane. She supports Palestinian woman-owned business and doesn't pretend she is an expert. I should too. I'm not an expert, but I'm learning.

This is a FANTASTIC video Evelyn. Thank you for your vulnerability. May I also offer up, a possible reason 5 and 6. Just like you, not excuses, but possible reasons. 5. Some people/influencers do not have the emotional or mental capacity. For example, maybe they are informed, but they just lost their job, are experiencing grief, navigating loss, have a preexisting mental health condition, or physical illness that they don't share on the internet, because it's not a part of their "content". And continuing to post as normal is a form of escapism, relief, familiarity or stability. Also, sometimes, people are diagnosed as "highly sensitive people" and to care about everything, everywhere, all the time would send them into a depressive or anxiety spiral or pit. This is something I don't see considered when this dialogue comes up. It's usually just either they don't know or they don't care. And you've done so well to show that they are many shades of gray in between. 6. Compassion fatigue. Some people have been supporting previous causes and injustices BEHIND the scene for years and they are exhausted. We were never designed to know every awful/inhumane thing that happens in the world all the time. Not a popular options I'm sure, but they just might be tired and ain't got nothing left. OR, Also, they may not want to be viewed as performative. We have all seen what happened with the "black squares" and "I'm here listening" proclamations of just a few years ago. And may I also offer an additional question to the rhetorical questions you posed. When a person is upset/frustrated/ disappointed with an influencer's lack of speaking up, my question is "What would you like the end result of their statement to be?" Meaning, what would the requester want to see happen and how would you like to see their response positively affect those in need? What tangible, trackable, impact would they like to see accomplished with the statement from the influencer? Just my thoughts.

I see you, I hear you. You are 100% right. It is really bad out here. People have had their lives destroyed for sharing opinions on the internet, even opinions that are not actually bad, and in this case world affairs, politics, culture, history all intertwine and saying "the wrong thing" gets people, specifically creators of color even major celebrities of color losing opportunities and being blacklisted. Though not all. Non-POC celebs have a different privilege that has become quite clear on this specific issue of who is allowed to speak out and who isn't. Certain non-POC celebs have used their privilege to support their agents and fellow actors, writers, etc. who are being targeted. I honestly don't care enough about influencers, I like following people on TikTok who are doing community work. Maybe people will shift their focus from influencers towards other types of people. Maybe they'll keep demanding celebrities speak out. I am so tired. I worry for my friends and family. I think your video was validating for those of us who've hit the point where we know we can only be responsible for ourselves at the individual level and that finding and building our communities is how we create social change. Hi Evelyn, thank you for this video. One thing that really caught me is at the end when you said "If someone is scared to speak up, scared to be political, it just means they don't have a support system around them to brave and weather the consequences." I think that's a lot of us right now. Whether it's because we need health insurance, money coming in, don't have a place to crash if things go south, don't know where we could get food or necessities, etc. etc. Our dogged individualism has severely weakened our collective power, because many of us are yoked to individualism/capitalism and don't know if our needs will be covered by others if we join the collective. I realized how thin my support system is because of Israel's current aggression, and it's spurred me to seek more communities that care about the collective and collective action. I'm hopeful if someone like me, who struggles very much just with my own life, is now seeking a collective, then a lot of other people must be doing the same too. Maybe it's a first step to something other than hyper-individualism and capitalism

I have changed the opinions of several people around by continuously posting and talking about Palestine. I consider that a big victory. I keep calling and writing my congressmen and Joe Biden. I keep donating, signing petitions, boycotting BDS brands, and I keep going out and protesting when I can. I am Palestinian-American, and I have been feeling so alone when it comes to these people who I’ve supported who are quiet. I wanted to get this off my chest - I feel betrayed by my favorite Asian-American influencers because I stood by them during #stopasianhate, but it almost seems like now that the issue isn’t about them anymore, they don’t care (??). (That’s one possibility, anyway.) They are living in luxury and posting about Christmas. And the part that really, really gets me down was the realization that they could post as much as they wanted to for StopAsianHate, yet this gen0cide of my people is something that instantly gets you flagged and banned and censored. We don’t get the same privilege of being able to post about it. I’m so bothered. I am so, so, so bothered and disillusioned. Thank you so much for reading this, and I’m sorry that it’s A Lot. It doesn’t take a long time or a phd. Humanity is very simple to understand. The history isn’t that old it’s only about 75 or so years of the same repeat cycle. I want you to know there are resources. We have a duty in this world & especially if we carry privilege in this world to inform ourselves of the struggles that happen to our fellow humans in this world. When we’re informed we’re their life line to other humans. We’re their voice when they don’t have one or can’t have one. We can prevent other genocides from happening. Adding to why caring is so difficult in the US which is that our politicians seem to be happy ignoring us. My reps don't respond, ignore protestors, or send generic return emails. No real listening/representing constituents, so we wait until the next election cycle to attempt to have leverage over politicians and even then we have to hope that there is someone to challenge the seat and that that person is better. Its just another system designed to make us feel hopeless/powerless. Great thinking points from the video and interesting to think about our expectations of others/ourselves online vs irl

I'm learning to direct my energy away from what I'm against and toward what i want to nurture. If I'm not spending my time keeping track of who has or hasn't spoken out, where is my time better spent? It also helps me stay away from despair

This is so important. Thank you for saying this Internet cousin, because it's not just Gaza, but Congo, Sudan, Ghana. The system thrives on keeping the money machine (western countries ie US, UK, Canada,) going through capitalism while exploiting "3rd world" countries for the goods they can get at a discount. As a state worker, I know I'm a "radical thinker". didn't know supporting human rights was radical but here we are. Thank you for saying the words @evelynfromtheinternets ❤️

Round of applause and a standing ovation! Thank you for your perspective and for sharing so much truth! As a middle school teacher this was SUPER convicting as, unfortunately, the section about "memorization vs critical thinking and learning" hit HARD!! Literally had to pause and just think... it's a system that is toxic and failing or children in more ways than one.

Having watched this whole video and holding myself accountable to divesting from influencers - I also think it's hard when the people directly around you, who are fucntionally your 'community', do not align with your values in any way shape or form and you are not able to find or surround yourself with people who _do_ , because of limited mobility, life circumstances, financial circumstances etc. And so you have to reach out and find community online because that's what you have access to. Just thought i'd add that dimension as someone who is FULLY surrounded by people who don't care and dont wan't to learn how to care. Like full blown g3n0c1d3 apologists. And I straight up don't have the capacity or ability to find people who do care irl, at least currently. I barely have the capacity to function as a human being or leave my house or survive being surrounded by these kinds of people lol. That said there is a difference between finding online community through spaces that prioritise education and social action without their being one centralised figure who is put on a pedestal, and expecting your favourite mommy vlogger to be more educated about Gaza than you are lol. It can just get tiring for people to say the answer is always community. Which yes it is, but that's not something everyone has access to or the capacity to create or exist within. People are MESSY and those of us who are able and willing to divest from all these oppressive structures have still deeply internalised them and it affects how we treat each other. Forever thankful to you for being HONEST and giving your audience perspective. I needed to hear this, i'm sure many of us did.

Preach! Also applies in other contexts as well. I watch a few mental health videos expecting to gain at least a little bit of knowledge on how to manage ADHD and a point they bring up is “find community”. Bish where. “Be in touch with your community”. Again, where. It’s not that simple when your beliefs, mental condition, etc are misaligned with the majority of people in your immediate circles or everyone else you find irl. Friends are a lot of work and sometimes you have to have moments where you have to hold back your real self to fit in, no matter who it is.

@@Sofiaode18 this is so real! I also engage with mental health related content and it is lowkey infuriaring how often people say that. It's not that they're wrong, it's just not as widely accesible of a resource as they say it is, and it can be honestly pretty despair-inducing when people offer that up as rhe primary solution when you just don't have access to that no matter how hard you've tried. It can also be hard when you haven't developed the skills to create and sustain that kind of community (because of mental illness, neurodivergency, early childhood trauma, etc.). And you don't have access to resources that can teach you those skills. Like knowing how to connect to people on a basic level, knowing who to trust and not trust, _how_ to trust if people have really hurt you, how to create boundaries, how to communicate, etc. Most people aren't very good at any of those things but when you grew up around and are currently surrounded by toxic people and your brain is even a little bit spicy? So incredibly hard. Honestly completely mystifying. Finding/creating and sustaining community is hard for people who don't have these obstacles, and it can honestly feel impossible if you do.

You're spot on as per usual. My major critiques of content creators is 1.) If an influencer uses their platform to speak on other issues and says "I'm always going to speak up for injustice" it is very odd when they pick and choose what to stand up for. It's like they want brownie points for doing some of the work. But a part of allyship is having to also confront those that make you the money (aka a white audience) 2.) I hope this makes sense but the reason capitalism and rich people are dangerous is because there's this perceived idea of "well they're just trying to help and obviously they know what they're doing look at their success". But this is why a Mr beast is dangerous. He makes people do silly games for content all under the guise of "well at least I'm helping". It's like when Bill gates steam rolled an entire political process to fund charter schools when the community had already voted not to. He isn't smarter than you because he's rich and he isn't rich because he's smarter than you. So until people learn that their faves would be nobodies without money we'd all be in a better place.

Oh Evelyn, you're speaking so much sense. I find myself in a similar space as you in regards to all the atrocities happening in the world being linked, having an understanding of some of them (not all), and that's already enough to have me blank staring into the distance wondering how/if we (humans) are going to make it out to the other side. That fear and understanding makes me freeze sometimes, like why am I going to work and doing my hobbies when outside is on fire? And regarding people's expectations on influencers when they themselves aren't actually doing anything is something 👀. Sure awareness and spreading the word gets people a little more informed on the subject, but that's just step one. What next? or do they just go to bed after typing free "watermelon" thinking that's a job well done. I remember having quite a telling conversation with one of my friends about parasocial relationships and their expectations of celebrities and influencers after Lizzo got dragged earlier this year for her alleged fat phobia, and my friend was devastated. And I was like girl, why is this your expectation from a woman you don't know? You just like her music and find her charismatic, frankly everything else you think about people outside of what their media image presents, is made up in your head, and that applies to everyone. Manage you expectations and work on yourself reflecting what you think is right and wrong.

Hi Evelyn, long time follower. I've found you content honest and real throughout the years. I thought #2 was hard but #4 was harder. Lol. But those people really don't care is just a sign for us to keep pushing. With the global support for Palestinians REsistance, we have new friends in struggle who get it. ❤ You're so right about how people get platformed and are demanded to make content while those making the content aren't necessarily doing the work nor taking accountability in their communities. Big facts!!! I didn't know about "Israel" until 2010 or 2011 and even now I'm STILL learning. But learning about Palestine hasn't been a safe journey either. Too many people want us to be ignoratn and have a stake in the ignorance of people for personal gain. I also appreciate your point about the "lack of support systems to whether the storm" when people do speak out politically for wanting to end the genocide in Palestine that U.S. has been funding for decades. One book I'd like to recommend is "Hundred Years' War on Palestine" Dr. Rashid Khalidi. Palestine has a 4,000 year history but this is a great start! I know it's not easy but do what you can and enjoy your time in the motherland. ✌🏽🍉🔥

You are addressing an important subject. We forget that content creators are just people with a camera and a KZitem channel, and just because they make entertaining and possibly educational content doesn't mean they know how to address political and social issues on their platform, and doing so may threaten their livelihood if they aren't careful.

There's an expression called "No Gods no Masters." These people are artists, not or moral centers, nor should they be. We need to stop having parasocial relationships that hinge on the celebrity or influencer being the culmination of all our hopes and dreams. They usually have a very good skill set that dovetails well into being in front of you on screen entertaining and engaging you. It would be amusing to me if it wasn't so sad the number of people who actually think Beyonce needs to say something to Israeli people who are using her music to champion apartheid. The Palestinian fight for freedom has been going on longer than most of us have been alive. And I mean going on since WWII. And I'm not saying this to make people feel mad or project some idea that "I know about this before you, you're late". But maybe have a seat and learn some things before you go popping off online about how this or that person is not living up to your expectations. A lot of y'all aren't living up to your own expectations, and it shows. And having expectations of strangers is weird and inappropriate. An actual genocide is so much more important than a fight on Twitter about whether or not Beyonce is really down for the people. That kind of thing is very insensitive and embarrassing, borderline horrifying.

I had to unfollow some creators who were encouraging this chronically online behavior of “cancelling” celebs for not speaking out on issues. I agree, it’s embarrassing to have unrealistic expectations of strangers and not everyone has to be an activist. I don’t think anyone has a moral responsibility to speak out on sociopolitical issues but some people seem to think that “you have to use your platform to spread awareness” or whatever. Apparently spreading awareness means inciting endless online arguments that doesn’t help the victims or solving the issue in any way. Online activism is so out of touch.

I think it's not weird and more than appropriate to urge people with huge platforms to speak up against a genocide. I think it should be normal for people to see so many babies mothers fathers brothers being relentlessly massacred and being upset that it's being silenced and people they admire are treating it as business as usual. I don't think it's weird to express disappointment in Beyonce I think it's a normal step before you move on and mistrust all these people and focus on your community. I expect people to be compassionate and human. I will keep expecting that it's not my fault if they fail not am I cringe or being inappropriate. That said, we have a lot more work to do no thaks to them but their silence won't stop us. Palestine will be free.

@@sorelle5687 serious question, where was the outcry in support a couple years ago when Alice Walker showed up with an aide boat filled to the brim with supplies for the Palestinian people, that was boarded by the Israeli military? When she and many of the aid workers were held hostage by the Israelis? Cuz that's my issue. There are people that have for decades been speaking out about this and doing everything they can to help the Palestinian people , but I never hear about folks sharing that information. There are famous people doing the work, they're just not as easy a target as Beyonce.

Someone also has to have the job of temporary distraction. Music, fashion, comedy, podcasts about absolutely nothing. We're inundated with loads of information on a daily basis. Sometimes you just can't, and you turn to the entertainment that doesn't make you think. I'd rather an "influencer" stay in their lane as opposed to speaking on things they know nothing about.
