Beagles also LOVE to run. They've got a ton of energy and need to run, run, run daily. Only a good choice for a 13 yr old if he's on the track team, and takes he dog with him for his nightly jogging.

Yes! When he described the problems they had with Barkely they lined up exactly with how beagles can be. They're smart, a little tricky to train, and LOUD SO LOUD. They're bred to bay at things. So yes, a teen he wasn't doing enough. But it was also going to be an uphill battle for the inexperienced.

Yep... You completely overlooked your FIRST mistake... Getting a beagle as a first dog. I had one after having had dogs all my life. He was a great dog with a wonderful personality and disposition; HOWEVER, he chewed everything in sight, never passed up an opportunity to eat garbage (and worse) straight out of the can, escaped every yard kennel we enclosed him in, and couldn’t be trusted loose in the yard because he would jump the fence and haul butt for hours upon hours even though he was neutered as a puppy. He lived to be 12 years old😳... (Let’s just say I’m not a quitter)... So... Lesson #1? Beagles, while GREAT dogs, are hunting dogs NOT house pets for single, older people who want a lap dog OR for kids who have better things to do than keep their eyes on their dog 24/7.

Googie’s Fairy Farm same goes for huskies. Mine just died last summer, 11 years old. But he was the hardest dog I ever owned. He was given to us and while I was able to train him not to eat small dogs and cats, he was absolute death on chickens and all other wildlife. My biggest fear would be that he would get out and get shot. I felt so bad for him that he is bred to run, someone made a slew of pups to sell for 800 dollars apiece, and he couldn’t do what his life calling was. He did get to run some in the country but he couldn’t be left to his own devices. I had to make an electric fence for him so he wouldn’t go up to the neighbors and tear up their trash.

My brother has two beagles and they are wild! They are very sweet but they are also like energizer bunnies on crack. The barking, running, bouncing around are just too much for a smaller city home and yard. I get larger, herding breed dogs from rescues and shelters that are young adults. It takes some time to train them but, they are sweet and a joy to be with. They only issue I have is when they get old and pass away.

Lisa Stevenson I like smaller dogs but have had lots of larger dogs. Nearly all of my dogs have been rescues. Most came from the street. It’s heartbreaking to lose one regardless of size but the smaller ones generally are longer-lived. Currently, I have a rat terrier mix who is a bundle of energy. She just turned a year old and still has some puppy issues but we’re working on it. She keeps me on my toes. I also have my daughter’s chow mix, Goujean. He’s about 10 y/o at this point and is a wonderful dog. He’s very well mannered and obedient. He’s also very intelligent, as is the rat terrier mix, Pistache. He just can’t be trusted outside because he’s an escape artist. He was found in the woods here as a puppy tied to a tree. We think he was supposed to be a bait dog. My daughter cut him loose and brought him home. We’ve had him since. He has 3 legs now after an accident he had when he was young but he seems to have no idea he’s “handicapped.”😁

The geese are the warning system. A dog, well trained, can protect the geese and whatever else there may be from harm. I have no experience with this breed. However, I loved training my father's hunters. They were mostly beagle, but usually, there was spaniel or another hunting breed mixed in. They were a motley crew, but I did make sure they were well trained. I had a Siamese cat. He was my protector! Literally, there are folks out there with scars because Mr. E felt they were being to rough or treating me wrong. He was rarely wrong. It takes a lot of care and attention to have a well-trained dog. Which is something most people never consider. Glad you took your time and did your research. If I were closer I'd come help you with the training, I do enjoy training dogs. (Ask my neighbors! Definitely making a wise decision to get just the one so you can devote more time and energy to concentrate and make the best training possible. I have 3 dogs, the last one was a gift that I didn't want but couldn't refuse. Adding her upset the pack structure and the behaviors that were possible to control and manage with just the original 2 became overwhelming with a third dog. I love her to the moon and back, but I wasn't in a position to get her the training she needed and it definitely shows. Go with what you have planned, take your time during training, and never be afraid to ask the breeder for advice and tips. Its in their best interest that you (and other customers) have success.

I could tell almost the same story with my own dog. I think there are few thoughts more mortifying than reflecting on my youth and the neglect I had for her. Out of the many regrets I have in life, the way I treated her and the decisions I made are among the harshest. I was also unable to train her, so she lived caged in the backyard(metaphorically) her whole life and I wasn't even there for her death when I could have been. She must have been so lonely. I am worse than you by many times. So, I've come to the same decision as you and I feel the same way. Because of my low quality as a human in general I could never trust myself with that partnership again, but in your case I think you will make a fantastic partner this time around and I'm glad to see you're trying again. Unlike me, you're a real adult. You've clearly grown immensely. It shows in the care you give the other farm animals; you've even managed to train the ducks somewhat, I think you can handle a dog now. And even if it turns out you can't give it maximum attention, a farm is a great environment for a dog and I'm sure it will have plenty of stimulation and freedom to roam no matter what you do. The only thing that I'd worry about is the coyotes, but I'm sure you'll solve any problem before it starts as you've got a community on here and you're a thoughtful guy. I know this is quite late and you must be well into the process of adopting him into the farm so a lot of these statements probably seem outdated or silly, but best of luck.

I got a Pyrenees/Maremma puppy in February and it has been the best dog I’ve ever had… I’m a big lover of my male and female border collies and my blue heeler is a beautiful stubborn smart and total daddy’s girl… but my male pup Donato never peed or pooped in the house and learns stuff almost immediately… I am guessing some of it is that he learns from his adopted brother and sister dogs before I can even get to him and train him to do something… he recently played fetch with me and I never taught him whatsoever how to do it. Pyrenees and Maremma are pretty close to being one breed but perhaps the mix of the two along with Donato’s unique personality just created the best lovely cuddly smart dog… interestingly he looks mostly Pyrenees just without the double dew claws… his mom was a mix (like him) and his dad was maremma.

All the blame might not be on you, since beagles are one of the most whiny, needy, and attention craving breeds in comparison to most other dogs. Beagles are obstinate. They're also babies that need constant attention or they go nuts. They're extremely intelligent, but to get them to actually USE that intelligence takes probably twice the effort that it would take to train, for example, a golden retriever. Even a cocker spaniel isn't as whiny as a beagle (in general, and they are whiners too). Beagles can get really neurotic - if you can call it that. The breed you chose, or any sheepdog, is going to take so much less effort to train, and it won't go nuts if you disappoint it. Also the personality is solemn, and they're solid as a rock. No worries about getting a whiner. Also, since you obviously have now successfully trained ducks, geese, and chickens, training a dog with five times the brains should be a cinch! Congratulations on the new venture! Keep up the good work. Great content. Thanks for the interesting video. בס"ד

Love your backstory. You will love the Maremma. I have 3 LGD's: 2 Anatolians who live full time with goats, and 1 Maremma who is our main farm yard dog who is responsible for guarding our chicken flock, and patrolling the north side of our property. The Maremma also guards the family, but is a primary player in the livestock as well. They are not nearly as stubborn as some of the other breeds of LGD's, and they do not roam like Pyr's and Anatolians. They will stay with the flock/herd when the others take off after the predators and ensue chase until the end. Not to say that the Maremma won't chase a predator, but they are more prone to warn it off and push more than chase. It's for these reasons we have a Maremma. I have a friend who has 12 (yes, 12) Maremma's on 180 acres of forest that is split into paddocks. We have significant large predator pressure. Her dogs are as solid as you would expect. Good luck, can't wait to see the pup!

Your plan sounds amazing. Make sure you get yourself on some good LGD FB groups for any help you may need. I would try to keep the puppy with the momma at least until 10 weeks old to give it a good start on what it needs to do since the mom is on a working farm already. We always say this is going to be our last dog, but over the last 25 years, we have only went about 4 months without a dog. I train my husband's and my own service dogs and I can attest that training multiple dogs at once is excruciating but not impossible. When training any animal, especially for those super smart and stubborn ones, patience, persistence and always following through is key. Treat an animal as if they are a highly intelligent being and they'll amaze you by showing you that they are just that, a highly intelligent being. Dogs, like many animals, don't do anything without a reason. If there's a bad habit, there's a reason for the behavior. There's no such thing as a bad dog, only bad (untrained) people. All training begins with training the humans first. I hope this blurb is useful to whoever may be reading this.

Ok, I have finished the entire video and you have a great solid plan!! We had a puppy Akita and a feral cat.....the Akita is now 2.5 years old and the cat LOVES him...and he her! As long as the dog is a puppy the cats should bond well with him and vice versa.

Congrats! Our biggest mistake as a LGD owner was not putting a priority on getting a quality perimeter fence installed first. We did eventually get it done... and since then owning LGDs has been a huge blessing to us. Looking fwd to all the future videos!

At 27 I adopted a dog from the local shelter. She has been the hardest dog I've ever had to train. Some days I'm not sure if things are getting better. I would recommended purchasing a dog from a reputable breeder with dogs with good temperaments.

So tickled to see you are getting a LGD! I Have two shiz tzu’s now and know as long as I live I will have a dog as a pet. Your need is work related. They enrich your life and I believe they are placed here as angels on Earth. Best of luck to you. Your choice looks to be excellent! Excited for you and the farm family!!!

I appreciated your thesis on 'Responsible Pet Ownership' actually. Get a dog if you want and need one but don't forget you have to care for ALL of your animals... including the dog, as you yourself has so perfectly pointed out. Be blessed!

I have been to tons of dog shows, and I never heard of a Maremma. I have busily searching online to find out what I can about the dog and I am impressed! It's a beautiful big dg with a dense, fluffy coat. I know he will do well on your farm, and it is Exciting news! I can't wait to see it! WELL DONE MORGAN AND ALLISON!

Interesting breed choice- sounds a lot like Great Pyrenees, also good lgds. When we moved on to 150 acres, we added two pyr mix rescues. They have been work, but a great asset to our setup, keeping coyotes and Bobcats at the edges of the property for the most part. We added a third - a pyr/golden mix that has turned put to actually be a pyr/chow mix - makes short work of garden invaders like rabbits, voles, etc.

I'm from Hungary, and the majority of our dog breeds are herding dogs. I personally own a Mudi and he's a truly wonderful dog. Very smart, quick to learn, loyal, and a goofy bundle of love. I'm not saying you should get any of these dogs, but I think it's worth checking them out in case you're interested or just want to read about different herding dog breeds. Extra large: - Kuvasz - Komondor Mid-size: - Mudi - Puli - Pumi

That's awesome. I hope you have a resource group to help you get through this. Puppies tend to go nuts at young adulthood and you might feel like strangling it but once they settle in, they are an invaluable resource!

I’m a highly experienced dog owner/Positive reinforcement trainer, and I will never, ever own a beagle. They’re lovely dogs, but I know the handful they can be...I’ll stick with our Great Pyrenees/great pyr cross livestock dogs, my terrier cross rescue(s) and my beloved working English springer spaniels. Working ESS are hunting dogs, but can be trained to leave birds alone (never had any issues with ours). All dogs are a lot of work, and nobody can force you to make the choice to have or not to have dogs. I salute your decision, maremma are a great livestock guardian dog...but they can be a bit funny with people, so we’ve never used that breed. It all sounds like you’ve got the right plan, as the number one thing to do is have them living with the flock right from day 1 😃👍 Congrats!!

Not a livestock-guarding dog, but my parents recently bought a Scottish deerhound - he is an amazing puppy, calm, obedient, graceful, goofy, and just the LOOK of him has other animals pausing for thought, since he's already as tall as our old lab at 3 and a half months, and he looks like a wolf who took ballet classes.

The hardest part in training dogs is training your family first. Spouses and kids all needs to use the same way of interacting with the animals so that there is less confusion for them. There are so many systems out there and most of them work. The trick is to make sure all of you are using it. I always found a pocket of bacon crumbles had my dog glued to me everywhere I went. A fast reward when you catch him being good makes training go a LOT faster.

Mistakes are how we learn. Don't make the same mistakes again and you should be good. The barncats will be anoyed by the puppy, teach him some lessons, and than ignore him.

From my understanding getting 1 dog and letting it grow up first before getting more dogs is the best way to go with livestock dogs because teaching them can be hard, and an adult dog helps and later down the line the first dog will be helpful if you guys get more. So I'm really rooting for Gold Shaw Farms.

Congrats on a good selection Morgan, I'm sure that Maremma will work out great for y'all (we have a Pyrenees). Don't worry too much about leaving them alone with the fowl in the beginning though because they are just not fast enough to catch them. Our saw them as play things up until recently and he's just over a year old.

Things can go down hill even with a properly trained dog, when I was a child, I taught my two small dogs some tricks, one of them was jumping obstacles (like horses in shows), unfortunately, they used that training to jump over the small door to the chicken coop, and steal the eggs, it took some time before realizing what was happening XD I used to teach tricks to the chickens too, they learn as fast as any dog
