Tteokbokki is the most popular Korean street food. There are tteokbokki stands everywhere in Korea. The rice cake is chewy and coat with spicy and sweet sauce. People make tteokbokki at home but they don’t taste like from the tteokbokki stands. In this video, I give you three reasons why homemade tteokbokki doesn’t taste like from the stands.
If you used rice cake to make tteokbokki and feel like your rice cake is not as chewy as you had in Korea, it’s because what you actually ate was flour cake, not rice cake. Flour cake is thiner, softer and chweyer. Most of tteokbokki stands in Korea use flour cake. I like flour cake tteokbokki more than rice cakw tteokbbokki but my husband and son like rice cake so I use half and half.
I also share my recipe of crispy seaweed roll, gimmari. Gimmari is like the soul mate of tteokbokki. Deep seaweed roll in tteokbokki sauce and enjoy it.

- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup
