Another plus to sponge filters is that small fish and shrimp can pick food and biofilm off them. You can get a larger air pump with a single output and a 4 or 8 port manifold. Those pumps are quieter and have good dampers under them. Put it on a thick mousepad and it's completely silent.

I'm not buying another hang-on-back filter (HOB). When the water levels keep dropping, the waterfall noise gets LOUDER every day. My HOB filter doesn't fit with the lid, so the tank has no lid. Food gets sucked into the HOB filter before the fish can eat it. My sponge filter is ~100 gallon capacity sponge...fits into the 20-gallon tank fine.

I love sponge filters! Great video, although I do disagree with the part about sponge filters not being good for 4' tanks. I run sponges in a variety of 4-6' tanks and they do a great job with water clarity and parameters. Like all sponge filters, they aren't going to stop larger feces from settling on the bottom (but that keeps you honest with your water changes, as you mentioned), but I've never had a problem with water clarity or under-filtration in larger tanks. My sponges are much larger than yours though, and I run a linear piston pump for the whole room (quiet and very powerful/reliable). So I think with bigger sponges and possibly a more powerful pump, your 4' tanks could easily have more than adequate filtration. I also like to install an airstone in the sponge. It produces a more steady flow of water through the sponge, aids aeration, and makes the filters much quieter!

I learned something new. I have so many air pumps because I connect one sponge filter or aerator to one air pump. I believe I have the plastic Y adapter at mark 3:42 to split the air pump into two sponge filters or aerator, which I’ve never used. Air pumps aren’t expensive but the room would be quieter with fewer air pumps. Cool tip for a newbie like me. I came across one of your videos this morning and I’ve been binging on your videos all day. I appreciate how you break things down to keep things simple and share your experience because it hasn’t been easy learning everything. Thanks!

A lot of these people sound like they want an aquarium but don`t want to deal with what comes with it. your followers have no idea that everything that comes with keeping an aquarium is just as exiting as the fish they keep. if I don`t here bubbles or water fall in my home I know something is verry wrong. if I get tired of hereing it I know theres something verry wrong with me. and by the way you can also use a power head on a sponge filter but that might splash a little water on your favoret shirt.
Open the core put ceramic, inside or activated charcoal. Have some water plants. Healthy little ones. Don't agree with idiots subjeçting, god's creatures to pain. Allow enough water for them to swim.
