Thanks for sharing that knowledge. I was left w/a question. I have a braided reata. I really appreciate how, when thrown, it wants to wrap around. For throwing and catching purposes, How does the twisted reata compare. Thanks again Jan

The braiding on the reata is so it doesnt cut into the animals neck like a twisted reata would

So far I haven't had that experience, but you're not the first one telling me that.

Interesting and educating, thanks. I have been asked to make a twisted rope from moose hide and the Scandinavian method is familiar to me but to have a broader perspective, any details on preparing rawhide reata would be interesting.

I did this one from a cow hide. I have never worked a moose hide, but I hear it works completely different than a cow hide. You need to post that question in the rawhiders gathering page on fb or get in touch with Randy Roberts. He might be able to give you an educated answer.

How can someone get string?

You could either process your own hide or contact Randy Roberts on fb. Randy makes some of the best hides you'll be able to find, and he sells them as hides, discs, sogas or strings. He'll even sell IKEA projects, meaning all the strings ready to braid a certain project.
