Hey slim, not to outdo you.... 2 weeks ago i was on my way south in the jeep pulling the tear drop trailer i had just built. I noticed a tire issue and stopped to change it. Well the trailer shifted on the rear stands and fell and pinned my left hand between the leaf spring and wheel that was laying on the ground. We ve all heard about the adrenalin rush and people lift thousand pound things off of someone. Well BS i tried but no way. I called for help for awhile and a guy heard me and went and got a fork lift to free me. An ambulance ride , hospital, insurance, and my dog put into the pound while i was in the hospital. A friend flew down to drive me and the rig back to nova scotia. Im now sitting looking outside at snow drifts with my left arm in a cast. BUT I AM HERE TO LOOK. I really thought i would die there . I thought about cutting my hand off but figured i would faint during the operation. The cell phone was back in the truck. Will try again next fall. And hopefully with a mate.

Having just watched your video I felt I should tell you how much I appreciate your thoughtful dissertation of what happened and your meet with the American Indian and his reflections on the "white men" who changed his predecessors world. I grew up in Scandinavia and thru fate - or whatever..:) - after a few changes of direction in my life I spent a number of years in the 70's on the road trucking as an Owner Operator. What you described in regards to high winds is something every trucker fears - especially when running empty with a box of some kind. I am one of the lucky ones, despite going sideways down the road, looking at my trailer pushing me down the road, I always managed to "pick it up" and get straight again and never had an accident. Like you I had wonderful experiences with people while trucking the US and Canada. If nothing else, living and experiencing other countries and cultures teaches you that we - no matter where we come from and what color of our skin - are all very much alike and have much to offer each other. Keep on trucking and doing your videos - you are very much appreciated and you bring back a lot of happy experiences and memories..:)

I like the sentiment in your story. I have an aliner for this exact reason. I have had a roll over in front of me, and been forced off the road when towing a caravan because normal traffic would not let me back into traffic after an overtaking lane. I think it's important that we don't become complacent when travelling. Shit happens, and you never know when and where. But one thing is for sure. It's probably going to happen quickly. Keep up the great videos!

10 out of 10! My sister moved to Wyoming from here in WNY. She sent me pictures of the actual wagon wheel ruts in the hills and meadows there. Also, pictures of messages carved in the rocks of families making their way west for those who would follow. Chilling to see. Really fascinating. Seems there should be a better word for what it took to go out into nothing to find a life. That was beyond courage and bravery.

Hi Slim! In fact, I only found your Your Tube videos with the Stranded in a Snowstorm video you referenced. It brought back some "fun" (looking back on them) memories of my own in my blue Ford pickup named Francine. She and I saw pretty much everything east of the Mississippi together, but then when I went west, I fell in love with the high deserts of New Mexico and never went any farther. Francine had 298,000 miles on the original engine (one new transmission) before she finally was given up for dead. I never towed anything behind me -- just slept in the topper that I had custom outfitted with a tiny RV air conditioner for the worst of the low-desert explorations. Man, I miss that truck, those times. Whole 'nother adventure I'm on now.

What I get from this is that we must use good sense and develop our critical thinking skills. Making decisions on when it is safe to travel is specific to conditions, experience, the sort of rig you have and so much more. It is better to lose some time than to lose your rig - or worse! Hey, I love the way the hitchhiker paid for his ride! Just what you needed. I see you applying decision making skills all the time and sharing how you chose to do things, then the results: what succeeded & what failed. Excellent opportunities for people to learn & apply to their own situation.

Yes. People should check the internet for detailed weather forecasts along their route of travel and stay back if it’s too windy! Yours may be the best RV life content on the internet. Your easy to listen to voice and gift for story telling make for some very compelling narration. You have a talent for editing (The overturned trailer shot projected onto your a-frame window was outstanding. Your passion for nature, your respect for others, your desire for your content to create a positive reaction and a learning experience for your audience , these all contribute to how rewarding it is for myself as a viewer to experience your videos. My favorite State. I travel in a Chevy Class B.I know there is no perfect choice for everyone but for me, I don't want any set up and take down, I want to get in and out of gas stations with ease, I do not like towing and I like to be able to park any where. At my point in life, I don't have to drive in questionable weather. If I don't feel comfortable I just stay where I am. I do understand people wanting more room and luxury but it's not for me. I like the travel videos as it shows me a side of america that i would not otherwise know. and even my mood can dictate what i like, at the morning it might be how yuo upgrade the aliner, 2 hours later it can be something else but what matters most is that the video reflects that you like what you do and that they do

This is exactly why I sold my truck camper. Despite all the anti-sway devices and airbags, the wind blew me around like a marshmallow on the interstate. I was very top-heavy just like that fifth wheel was. Didn't go to a camper such as yours, but did get a version of the R-Pod, which has a lower profile and handles the wind better. But I don't really drive much in the wind, I have my house with me, so I just pull over and stop till it goes away

Slim, I've enjoyed all 3 videos of this trilogy...particularly the Stranded in a Snowstorm one. Safety and the importance of knowing your own limits cannot be overstated. Drifting in a 35' class A is not a fun experience and one that I don't plan on repeating. As for "How much stuff do you really need to be happy?"...I'm sure there are as many correct answers as there are people to ask (to each his own).

You can't please everyone..Your videos are always drama free and well done..I always enjoy them..I have had out of 9 RV's in my life only 2 towables...one huge 35' Toy hauler that I pulled with my Infiniti QX56 suv, like an Armada based on a Nissan Titan truck, which I actually have now..So it was rated for 8900 lbs..well this toy hauler was pretty heavy and the few times I did tow it I was praying the whole time...I hated it!! Then I bought and flipped a 1995 Wilderness 25' travel trailer and that smaller one behind that large suv towed like a dream..so the larger ones just are a lot more worry to me anyway..I'm sure a huge truck would have helped but I learned then that I would always stick with a motorized RV whether a class A, my preference over the years or a class B van, the one I want to get now after 7 class A's and always having to worry about where I can go or where I can fit before I go there! With a van or any smaller unit it sure does feel good as you know, to be able to go many more places with less worry!!! Safe travels to you!!

I dont have an RV yet but to many of you that do. High winds and RV's do not mix. As a CDL driver I have seen more RV's rolled over more then any other accident on the road. High winds can occur anywhere in the US. I40 OK, NM, and AZ. I70 KS are a few. In my travels, the greatest number of RV roll overs due to winds was on I80 NE, and WY. I can not stress enough when you get close to Elk Mtn in WY, be prepared and this goes for anytime of the year. High profile vehicles, lets be safe out there. The journey is so much fun, being safe allows us to reach our destination safely. 👍👍👍

I watched your foul weather video multiple times and used it as a touchstone in my mind as I navigated a terrible snowstorm in Arizona. I was stunned to see how fast people are willing to drive in very dangerous conditions. My teardrop trailer had about 12 inches of ice built up on the front. Later I learned of a couple of fatalities resulting from the driving conditions during that storm. Thank you for the thoughtful and creative videos. You are my favorite KZitem creator.

Slim don't get discouraged on some of the comments that are negative and over critique your videos. That's just the way it is. Your hitch hiker was a blessing is disguise. I can hardly travel on the internet without bumping into these negative posters. When I can I block them or remove them from my websites that I have. I really enjoy your videos.

Great video and very informative. I do think it is more about common sense. Every RV owner needs to know about wind on the highway. He should have pulled over or off. My guess is he "took a chance", because it would mess with his schedule.

I've loved every one of your videos. How sad there are so many angry people out there in KZitem Land. Thank you for your concern for all. You took risks yourself that day and I'm glad you're safe. Your interaction with your Rider was touching. Thank you for sharing this powerful video filled with so much emotion. It says a lot about you 👍💕

Yesterday morning I was in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon, crossing Deadman Pass (a great name!). The temperature was in the upper 20's to lower 30's and it was snowing hard enough with freezing rain mixed in, and the wind brisk enough, that even heated window surfaces could not keep up with the volume. People were having to stop to clear their windshield wipers as every few miles they would just turn into sliding bricks of slush and snow across the windshield instead of making the road ahead clear to see. In the middle of the situation, with mostly just chained-up truckers and plows and 4-wheel-drive pickups, there would be an occasional car and ... no less than 5 RV'ers and RV haulers trying to get through in those conditions. Waiting just three hours promised significantly improved conditions, but they were determined to take the risks involved right then instead of losing the time waiting. A lot more can be lost doing that. Every good pilot has a sense of what the limits of his or her aircraft are. If you ask, "what's the maximum crosswind that you can safely operate with to and from a runway in this thing?" you will invariably get a number past which they do not feel comfortable. RV's of all sizes have definitive limitations for operating safely and every RV'er should learn from experience what that number and situation looks like, monitor conditions, and operate accordingly. Sad and every expensive consequences can very often be avoided. Even in smaller stand-up-height rigs, you are driving or towing a fat sail.

Really enjoyed the positive outlook portion of this video! To keep things in perspective, the philosophy I stick with is: "So long as your still looking down at the dirt, and not up at it, it's a good day".

As always, spot on Slim. Education, common sense and experience go a long way. I've towed numerous times in the wind with no mishaps. Not to point fingers, but letting someone operate a Class A bus or huge 5th wheeler with no more experience then driving a car to work puts people at risk.

Slim, I an a viewer of your vids. Not because I travel in an a frame or a small rv but because you are terrific and I'm sure as good as your videos, simply great. I have one of those tall 5th wheelers and appreciate the reminder about winds. You are a follower adventurer on the road and road of life. Thanks for your outlook on life!

My wife and I camped at that very spot last summer. We were caught in a powerful thunderstorm while camping in our A frame alongside the crevice right about where you are. At the time I was oblivious to the danger of our A Frame roof blowing off, but dodged a bullet on that one. Live and learn! I take it you were not too impressed with Wall Drug, or maybe you just missed the signs --- LOL I look forward to your trip down the Eastern Seaboard. I live in Southern NH and have traveled it often. I only know of one good boondocking spot in PA which I will share with you shortly. Happy Travels!
