I love how Lorde's verse harkens back into Charli's story about Sophie from "So I". Charli says she wouldn't stay for dinner with Sophie until it was too late. It was genuinely cathartic for Lorde to explain why she'd been avoiding eating with Charli, and basically promises to rectify this in the future - before it's too late this time.

I honestly cried a little after the "Young girl from Essex" and "Ride for you Charli" lines in a weirdly cathartic/happy for them both way. Soo much about the patriarchal nature of our society that is concentrated even more heavily in the music industry pits women and the normal insecurities/rivalries anyone can have against each other. It's sooo refreshing to see this play out in such a supportive way that isn't sanitized either. They both own up to their own inner cynicism and friction, but end up giving each other space to articulate them towards a remix that is even greater than the sum of its parts. I could go on, there's so much that works about this and I've really enjoyed hearing from women is how much this is relatable/cathartic the EXPERIENCE of this song is and genuinely gives me hope for how people in general can learn from a work of art like this.

Production wise, the chorus adds a lot more bells and whistles which feels a lot more cathartic and euphoric imo. Narratively, I think the verse where the 2 sing together on equal footing and the lines where they say they ride for each other push the narrative forward, that even if the powers that be make relationships between women hard, that there is the ability to close the gaps by reaching out. Yeah nah that part about how girlies get one spot and have to scrap over it is so true. Goes back to those studies that show that even when a woman is actually speaking less than her male peers, she is still perceived as speaking 'too much' - the space for women is smaller, so no wonder they have to compete harder for it.

I think in the Lady Gaga documentary (though it could've been Katy Perry's) it was mentioned that the top female artists are rarely friends with each other despite the fact that they are really the only people who can really relate to what they're going through. You're right, I think within a patriarchal society scarcity mentality (that they're can only be one, or a few, women) forces a sort of zero-sum game which is especially heightened with the fact that even as early as your mid-late 20s, they're already looking for your replacement (Taylor Swift captured this perfectly on her track "Clara Bow"). This is also a phenomena we're seeing play out in real-time with Caitlin Clark in the WNBA and what's happening there. Connor Bedard and Victor Wembenyama were praised and taken under the wing of a Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid and LeBron James and Kevin Durant because their entrance into the league didn't threaten the legacies or money or attention of those stars whereas Clark's does because "there's only room for one." Also the point about grace is poignant. Great quote from the film "Roman J. Israel" starring Denzel Washington (who was nominated for an Oscar for the role): "We are formed of frailty and error. Let us pardon reciprocally each other's follies. That is the first law of nature." He also says (which underlines your point of how forgiving others helps you forgive yourself): " You know, all those years of practicing, scouring law books, achieving technical triumphs through loopholes and ambiguities, none of which were adequate to save me from the reality of my present situation. Then today, in the middle of nowhere, lost, I had a revelation; an insight so sweeping, so clear. It's me George. See, I didn't see it before because I never experienced the other side. I'm the defendant and the plaintiff simultaneously. I file against myself, I represent myself, I convict myself, hereby expanding the full scope of the legal desert, because the judgment's built in. The only thing left is forgiveness and I grant that to myself. An act doesn't make the person guilty unless the mind is guilty as well.

It is not true, the figure of women in pop at this moment is overrepresented and many of them are between thirty and forty years old: Ariana, Charli, Miley, Taylor, Selena, Lana, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé etc., it is lazy attribute all the ills of women to patriarchy when most men are equally discarded when their creativity and hegemonic beauty decline. At this moment there is no more masculine and patriarchal energy than what Taylor Swift is displaying with her capitalist and predatory behavior, however we choose to think that this is a new face of feminist empowerment. really? In all areas of life it is vital and essential that the new displace the old, otherwise we would not have gotten this far.

I’ve never seen a “beef” handled this openly and maturely. It’s refreshing to see two women work things out on the same track and admit their faults and misunderstandings. It’s nice to see them hype each other up and fight against the patriarchal standards women have to deal with in the music industry.

AVAA, prof. I love this song and its what got me to listen to the album in the first place. (Long ramble ahead, sorry) I feel like it's such a human experience to have those frenemies where your own insecurities and jealousies get in the way of what should otherwise be a beautiful friendship. It feels genuine in the way that Charli talks about universal concepts by making her art about mundane, petty, messy details. To me, the tone in the original song is more actually admiring of Lorde than Sympathy is a Knife was about Taylor Swift (I think?) even though both use the same storytelling mechanism of seeming to shit talk the other (when really it's just internal insecurities projected outwards). And to hear Lorde reaffirm her friendship with Charli in song made me cry a bit tbh. I could gush about subtle details like "inside the icon is the young girl from Essex" unequivocally stating how much of an icon Charli is but also stating the detail in a way that a friend would (idk if that made sense); the direct restatement of the same hair motif; the close harmonies in the last chorus; Lorde's use of the autotune and filtered vocal production that is characteristic of Charli but different from Lorde's usual raw voice style; and finally the "I'd ride for you Charli" and "you know I'd ride for you too".

To your point about it being the same song not much remixing, you’re right. It’s the girl so confusing VERSION with Lorde, not the girl so confusing REMIX with lorde. Frankly it’s subtle, but it almost gives more respect to lorde in a diplomatic way, emblematic of the message of this song. Hearing Lorde’s version or her side of the story. Plus it almost evens the hierarchy given that it’s “Charli’s” song

Making it appear like Charli’s looking in the mirror but actually there’s no mirror and it’s just Lorde across from her… Kind of playing into the joke that they look alike / get confused with each other. Especially with them having “the same hair” so Lorde could still get mistaken for Charli from the back, and vice versa. I really thought that’s what it was lol 🫠

Personally I think Hass avocado is a better avocado than Fuerte. Yet, I understand the confusion some people could have with distinguishing the two. Both are good quality but Hass tells you when it’s ripe with it color change. Yet, Fuerte is the “standard” high quality and as a result commands a higher price. Personally both taste the same on toast and we should stop trying to pin great avocados against each other. In the end, we all enjoy a quality super food.
