As an adopted person myself who has known and watched this since I was little, I can safely say that Medusa's "Adopted?! What makes you think ANYONE would want a homely little girl like you?" is the biggest gut punch I've ever got watching a Disney movie ever (and apparently some non-English versions translate to even worse variations, including "who would want an ugly orphan like you?").

This was my first exposure to Geraldine Page as a kid and it really didn't surprise me that she was considered such a high caliber actress in live action because she made Medusa menacingly flamboyant without copying Betty Lou Gerson's Cruella. Ironically when she finally won her Best Actress Oscar after years of being nominated and losing she beat out Whoopi Goldberg for the win - so basically you had Madam Medusa beating out Shenzai the Hyena for an Oscar LOL

While Medusa isn’t quite as despicable as some of the other purely human villains (like Tremaine, McLeach, Rourke, or Frollo, among others), she’s definitely scum. Both her line to Penny about no one adopting her, and her willingness to keep Penny in a flooding pit make her thoroughly unsympathetic. So I’m pleased that she gets her karmic reward in the end. Speaking of Penny, I personally like how, probably thanks to Medusa, she learned how to be a little ruthless. How else would you describe her willingness to use explosives as a distraction?

Jim Jordan, who voices Orville, the albatross that serves as an "airplane" for Miss Bianca and Bernard, was a very famous voice actor from the days of Old Time Radio, star of the long-running radio sitcom *Fibber McGee and Molly.* The show's most iconic running gag was about a hall closet packed with junk. Everytime Jim Jordan (in the role of Fibber) decided to look for something he thought was in the closet, his wife Molly would warn. "Don't open that door, McGee!" And immediately a cascade of sound effects, representing a mountain of junk tumbling out of the closet, was heard.

Related fun fact: Part of the reason Cruella was replaced with Medusa is that her animator didn't want to just reuse someone else's character. Also, he was going to make this one of his last projects, and he wanted to go out on a high note, which I think he very much succeeded at!

For my money, *The Rescuers* is finest work of the "Bronze" age of Disney animation (the period after Walt's death when the animation department was being kept alive by the "Nine Old Men," a group of senior animators who had worked with Walt on many of his classic films, prior to the Disney Rennaissance that began with *The Little Mermaid* in 1989). This film also benefits from the contributions of Don Bluth and the group of younger animators who later broke away from Disney to form a rival studio.

Also is pretty wild how many corners were cut for this film, like even the white in the eyes not being coloured in. 16:08 This scene where they show the white in the eyes, was from the animators trying to prove to the higher ups that they could do it. But the basically got back 'do it or you're fired' so... that's what happened.

Hadn't thought about it before but yeah you're right, in this era of animation there was several mouse characters even when they weren't what the story was about. As many have said, there were plans for Cruella from 101 Dalmatians to be the villain of this movie, but they ultimately made Medusa a new villain, though clearly cut from the same cloth. But what I find an interesting follow-up to that fact: Penny was originally intended to appear in the 1988 film Oliver & Company, but they likewise backed out of that idea and made the girl in that film a new character, Jenny. Isn't that interesting that we were inches away from three Disney films from three different decades all sharing a universe, but twice they backed out of that idea. You know what Disney properties ARE all set in the same universe?? 1994's Gargoyles, 1999's Tarzan, and 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. See, in the 2001 Tarzan TV show, they introduced Queen La, a villain from the Tarzan novels. While I don't think it ever comes up in the show, in the novels La is from Atlantis, so they gave her the same design motifs as the 2001 film's Atlanteans. And for the 2003 Atlantis TV series, one episode was a Gargoyles crossover. They got as far as voice acting before the TV series was scrapped, only three episodes were completed and sadly the Gargoyles crossover was not one of them - but in 2009, a character first introduced in that Atlantis episode made an appearance in the Gargoyles comic book.
