Did you hear my fan girl screaming all the way down in Florida? I want to thank you for getting me through first the Covid lockdown and then losing most of my vision. I would have been almost totally isolated without you, Brenda, Laura, and a few others who were my “ friends” during a difficult time of my life. Yes that is Anne Grimshaw. She is my pride and joy. I recently acquired and started her sister Mary’s sampler, and once I’ve got a little more progress on her I will probably go ahead and do an entire video on the Quakers- mostly about their history and their beliefs that led them to wanting to educate girls but also showing some of the Quakers I have finished and the dozens of Quakers I have on the go. I think it’s the symmetry that makes them just so wonderful to stitch. It’s like meditation. I’m working on Notes for my next video. I think it’s going to be an introduction to the different ways women and girls have learned to stitch through time and start of looking into the different styles of the various schools. This will be rather simple and well-known information to people like you who have been immersed in Samplers for a long time, but I think it will be enlightening for some people who are new to Samplers. Again, thank you and Mr. Professor Saltbox for hours of entertainment, inspiration, laughs, and companionship.

Oh absolutely! I adore stitching with silk, but sometimes it can be quite persnickety. Just this morning I had to put aside what I was working on because the humidity in the air just would not cooperate with the silk. I was trying to use. Sometimes you just have to treat it like a grouchy, cat and beg and coax it into cooperating. That damp sponge will help a lot, but I do have some other pointers and I’m putting that on my list now for a future video. I know the Amish are primarily known for their quilts and we have some Mennonite people down here in Texas do exquisite hand quilting for outside customers. To me, history is really just talking and gossiping about what people in the past did, how they did it, why they did it, and deciding whether or not what they did was a good idea after all or not. I think the reason people don’t enjoy history is because they’re not that interested in the particular history that is usually presented in school. I am not very interested in military history or wars. Politics and who was president or what treaties were signed or the economics of a particular place. Just kind of leave me bored. But if I get to look at, something like how did needing to keep food fresh before we had refrigeration lead to people exploring new areas of the world or how people wanting to express themselves by wearing different colored clothing led to certain groups of people becoming more important in society or how changing views on whether childhood was a time for playing or a time for working made a difference in all of society- that’s the kind of history that interests me and I hope you will enjoy looking at history from that point of view much more than you have enjoyed history in the past.

Thank you so much. I tell my students (most of whom are planning on majoring in business or in a science/technology field) that makes life possible, but the humanities make life worthwhile. I didn’t start enjoying history until I was older and in fact, I didn’t even study it until I went back to school for a masters degree. I think the problem is that school, the focus is on things like military history and political history and economics, but if you look at history from a broader perspective, it’s really just gossiping about people in the past and what they did and why they did it and whether or not it turned out to be a good thing or a bad thing. Beyond that, everything has a history. the history of clothing, history of food, the history of medicine and healthcare, the history of entertainment- those are the things I enjoy, and they are every bit as important and valid as in the elections.

Oh, I definitely will do one if not more videos covering the Quakers and their Samplers and you’ll get a chance to see them all up close in personal then. They are some of the most relaxing Samplers to stitch and the Quakers’ views on life and what it meant to be a good person and how women and girls could contribute to society is tied up very tightly to those Samplers. I plan to get another video up in the middle of the month to start talking about some of the schools and teachers who taught young people and other adults how to stitch throughout history and will work our way up to Quakers and other groups who used needlework as an important part of their curriculum. I hope you’ll join me then.

Your tidbits of history sprinkled amongst your samplers was fun and interesting. I look forward to your next flosstube.

I was born in San Antonio so my heart lives in the Hill country even now. I absolutely adore Plum Street Samplers and have several on the go. If you can stitch Plum Street, a big reproduction sampler is nothing. How many thousands of Stitches is in one of Paulette’s gigantic houses? Or worse yet, one of her yards? I’m stitching her shepherd sampler, and I saw Carol saltbox stitcher showing her live on little sampler last night. That thing is full coverage and huge!

@@professorstitch9171 you have a point about the density of Plum Street samplers! I stitched This I Know for my daughter and felt the sheep were multiplying in the yard as I stitched! I think I found the right setting on my camera, but thank you for reminding me. I’m so glad you mentioned my diction. See you saw Martin and Lewis in those two as well I knew! (do you think maybe Laura has a martini or two before they film, lol!) I think everybody needs a Brenda. But then again all the Brenda’s need their own Laura so it works out. We just have to find each other and I think floss tube is a good way to do that. Don’t you? Oh if I had been young enough to travel and move around after graduate school, I would’ve loved to have gone east and or North and work in museums, particularly as an interpreter. I have a dear friend from grad school, who is some sort of administrator for historic homes museums in the Washington DC area and that just seems like a dream job to me. For many years I was a performer at the Texas Renaissance Festival, and sometimes was able to take some Elizabethan black out and demonstrate on the path, but it is very different historical acting versus more accurate reenacting. I would love to see the Cherokee sampler you reproduced. I know nothing about Native American needlework, and stitching traditions. (well except for the planes, Indians and sewing.) I think you and I could sit and visit for days on end about the things that we like thank you so much for reaching out and letting me know you enjoyed the video and I look forward to a long friendship with you

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes it wasn’t until the third time. I watched through my video that I noticed everything was backwards. I was so nervous. Isn’t it silly that the default setting on the video camera on all this wonderful technology is to show everything backwards? I think I’ve got it set right now so hopefully the next one will be better. I’ve been teaching college for over 30 years now and class periods are 50 minutes long. It takes the students about five minutes to get in and settle down and then they’re all putting on their backpacks and trying to dash out the door five minutes before class is over so I have an internal 39 to 40 minute lecturing timer. I guess all those professional educators knew what they were doing when they set class periods to 50 minutes!
