As I watched this video, I realized the philosophical dilemma the restorers faced. Either you restore the original to the best possible condition you can achieve, or you recreate the car by replicating all the parts that are damaged beyond what can be perfectly restored. Since this appears to be the Concourse de Elegance, where they want perfection, I guess they went with the latter approach. And since it appears BMW was behind this very expensive project, I guess recapturing the beauty of the original vehicle was the primary goal. I did sort of expect a red car, but seeing that lower door frame shot, I guess the original color was white. What a very beautiful job by a great team of skilled craftsmen. Bravo.

i agree completely, these idiots on here bitching about restoring a car don't seem to understand whats involved and/or accepted, if you replace a door, or skin a door, does that make the car a copy, or if you cut the middle out of a panel and weld a new piece of metal in, is that better than replacing the panel, i try very hard to stay away from the comments when watching all the videos on youtube but for some reason im just drawn to them. one of my personal needle in the eye is these assholes that constantly say patina, why the hell would you leave rust on a car, the rat rod crap, we didn't do that shit in the 40s and 50s, us poor boys made what ever we built or repaired look as best we could with what we had, it doesn't take much money to use wire brushes and steel wool pads and sandpaper and spray cans. most of our cars were just as spotless under neath as on top. to me patina, and rat rod, are different ways of saying lazy.

Growing up in San Antonio in a neighborhood near Ft. Sam Houston in the mid 60's, I would often see a black BMW 507 on one of the main thouroughfares near us. My dad and I were really intrigued by it, so one day when he and I were running an errand we found ourselves driving behind it, and decided to follow it home and check it out. Surprisingly it lived in the same neighborhood as us and the proud owner was a Master Sargeant who had brought it back from Germany when he was stationed there. I always thought it was one of the companies most beautiful designs. Very Italian.

It was a Disappointment as they built a completely new car Not sure if I would call it a restoration when they didn't restore it but replaced everything on the outside of the car . You think they could of restored the original body it looked to be in rather good condition! In stead of building a completely new one! It would be fun to take the old body and try to fit it on a modern car frame . I can't imagine The number of hours it took to hammer out a new body! I'm not saying anything to discredit the workman as they are without a doubt totally awesome! not really - they did remove all the paint, but they only replaced a few small sections of the body due to rust, but 90% is still the orignal body, just completely dissasembled and reassembled with new paint and all - I just wonder why they used screws in many places where the original was riveted
@splash5974

@@kayneahnung3661 Lol My comment was from about a yr ago, so had to rewatch most the video. Not sure if you have any knowledge in the trade, but the entire body was removed, leaving behind a chassis which they dipped to remove rust. Rebuilt the chassis, and made all new body for the vehicle. After it will get new interior, gauges, wiring, trim, and paint. Like my original comment states, this will basically be a new car, minus the rebuilt chassis under neath it! As per the screws, they are only there to hold the panels in place while doing fitment. This is normal practice!

It looks amazing, but because they substituted the original body by a new made one, and because they changed the color from red to white, it may no longer, be entirely called Elvis' BMW. By substituting the original body and color, they made it lose a great deal of its historical value. It was more a replacement than restoration. However I gotta admit that they did a fantastic job.
@hyflyer64

A bit of reading shows that the car was originally white.
@docraineyIII
2 жыл бұрын
@@hyflyer64 I must agree with you on the cars original color. My German is not up to muster anymore, but I believe the body letters and numbers exposed early in this fantastic film indicated white was original. As those codes were being exposed you could see a seemingly thick layer of factory white beneath the red. At the end of the film, in what appeared to be the passenger door hinge perch, the restoration team purposely left a bit of the cars red history unpainted, I think to demonstrate in perpetuity the car’s red Elvis ownership history. Mr. Xavier’s comments regarding body panel replacements seems valid. I too was puzzled by those apparent substitutions given the body appeared in rather amazing condition for a 1957. The hood, for example appeared to go to paint while painted black (?). Anyway, do we quibble over body pieces but say nothing regarding the replaced engine and electrical bits, upholstery, weather strips, lamps, and on and on? Elvis had his hands on that wheel, worked it’s transmission, and squeezed those carburetor throttles, and stepped on those brakes. I don’t claim to know what makes a car a car except to say that car once belonged to Mr. Presley.

Elvis never owned either of the two BMW 507s (white & Red models) he just leased both 507s for the duration of his national service in Germany . He wanted a Porsche spyder like his idol james Dean but didnt fancy the 3 year waiting list. This 1958 model was originally white & was second hand when leased to Presley in December 1958 If you payed attention Dennis you may have noticed the car was not reshelled . Hence.. the acid Bath & extensive panel repair restoration process , that lasted almost the entire video 🙄

BMW 507 - e os cuidados dos restauradores em guardar cada peça do conjunto para não perder nenhum parafusos e/ou fixador são os preservadores da historia do automovel. Quero acompanhar essa restauração.

Artsy video and a great deal of painstaking work. Would like to have seen details of the interior restoration, what went into priming, painting and final touches. Finally, a color graphic of what was replaced vs what was original.
