Carla Jean to some youtubers, yes. But not people like Tana who literally scammed a bunch of people on several occasions (ie tanacon and when she charged people to livestream her fake wedding that was shit quality). Also some influencers have tours where they just do shitty story times and nothing that great and they charge fans ridiculous prices. And don’t get me started on some of the shitty merch some of them have that is so overpriced and basic. It’s rare these days to find good youtubers who put out good content that’s worth watching and supporting. I like this girls channel because it’s very informative and her videos are well done so I’ll support her and some others, but definitely not the bigger youtubers that are clearly sellouts.

I think a lot of the comments about her ranting / trailing off need to remember that we are very accustomed to seeing celebrity interviews, people who have media training, who have a lot of experience in this kind of setting. Or we're used to seeing youtuber's who analyze and edit their own videos and cut down the fluff. Essena is just a regular person having a one on one chat with Tiffany.

@bej7784

nishamilk I think with any flawed system it’s easiest to blame the user. With institutionalized racism, healthcare, the college system, our food industry, etc. It’s easier and less frightening to just be dismissive of how flawed systems hurt people and blame the people. I think the idea is that if it’s the person’s fault, of course people who have power don’t have to take responsibility, but I also think if we blame the people who are hurting then the average person feels less afraid that the system will hurt them too because “they’re not like the (flawed) person” who’s been hurt.

No one want to be be and adult and be accountable, people want the reward and then blame the industry for what they decide to do with what was given. They have a limit of age and they need to be respected for everyone. Also the industry needs to stop acting like people are product being sold, because in any case the is the person who decide to sell themself. The Today issue about social media is lots of issues, first of all everyone blame it while no one do a things about it, people swear that social media push a unreachable body image while that has allways being the thing since the gibson girl) mainwhile personal trainers/nutricionist/doctor's pages are taken down because for a noicy group being fat is the new smoking in the fifstys.

Well said! I completely agree with you! We can’t just churn and burn these young girls, loving them when they’re popular and then destroying them when they make mistakes. We need to take responsibility for our part in this and the very real damage that it’s doing. Thank God social media barely existed when I was her age. I made the most stupid mistakes, like all teenagers do, and I can’t imagine having these displayed forever for all the world to see (not that anyone would have been very interested in what I was doing haha). Not to mention how insecure I was at 14-19, at least I knew people in magazines were edited and they were models. I can’t imagine how it would have impacted my confidence to see these perfect images of perfect people living perfect lives on social media and at the time we also didn’t really know that the photos were edited or staged. The pressure of knowing that these were just normal girls like me and yet seeing how flawless they were would have been immense. This influencer culture is so toxic and it makes genuinely makes me fear for the impact that it’s having in teenagers and particularly teenage girls. I think we all need to show kindness and empathy and stop building people up, only to if not look on in glee as they’re torn down but tear them down ourselves.

She reminds me EXACTLY of how I look/feel/sound when talking to my therapist every week. There's a lot of me trailing off and saying, "yeah so...yeah." to end what I was talking about, because I can't even remember where I started because there is SO MUCH to express and I rarely get the chance to express it except for in therapy. It's how people sound when they're talking about something for the first time and having realizations about things during the process of vocalizing it. I think Essena is incredibly brave and wise and has so much to offer and teach the world and I can't wait to see her continue to grow and evolve.

People clearly haven't read Rosanna Guber's work. This is exactly what an anthrophological interview looks like. It's not the kind of interview you get from Hollywood. This is raw, natural and 100% normal. She may be a bit troubled / ashamed for what happend and the things she did, but you (people on the comment section) shouldn't diagnose her based on a Skype interview. She was just nervous and there were a lot of things she wanted to get off her chest. She is still very young too and is still learning. The comments about her mental health may be truly harmful to her selfsteem. Don't forget she is a real human being, not a character in a TV show. I really hope this young lady can pull through her problems (past and current) and feel at peace with her life, even if it's not "Instagram perfect". I think Hilary supporters had good intentions but were just ignorant of the facts because they trusted mainstream news outlets to guide them - as long as those outlets appeared to be left-leaning (which, in reality, they're hardly left at all. I feel like Essena is looking for and willing to acknowledge truth. She could have easily continued with building a brand after this scandal or whatever and very privately worked through her thoughts, but it seems like when she realized this (her relationship with social media/influencer culture) was unhealthy she was no longer willing to promote it. I don’t care if her answers were concise. She has integrity.

Also, we’re all lost. We’re all figuring it out. Tiffany tends to do it in a more objective way, Essena is willing to jump in and discuss when it’s still raw. I don’t understand this idea that Essena, having way more experience in this world that most humans, is unworthy of using her platform simply because she is acknowledging that she doesn’t have all the answers and that this has affected her. This affects all of us! None of us have the answers! Maybe by watching Essena continue to figure things out we all might learn something, maybe not all of us will. Basically, I don’t think you owe anyone content. Refund them if they paid you, but if something is hurting you get out. I’m glad she left and I’m glad she’s trying to fix it now

Never heard of her before. And honestly? She reminds me so much of myself. Is she disorganized in her thought process? Yes. And this is true for so many people. I've had so many conversations where i was all over the place. And do we need to work on it? Yes, it's important. But also, don't be too hard on yourself, it's okay. We're humans! We get used to seeing perfect videos on youtube with perfect arguments and what it seems to be a perfect thought process, and we forget that this is actually planned. And when it's not, kudos to that person! But most of us aren't like that. Aren't we all over the place in the world? This is real life. Love her! Yeah, so... yeah. You're not alone Essena. ❤

@@xocreme that's actually something I've been thinking about... i talk like she does, and i think SO many of us in real life talk like her!! i don't know what the fucking big deal is. influencers on social media practice what they say and can re-record and edit everything they say to make it seamless, and viewers are used to seeing ppl online talk perfectly. but obviously most of us don't talk that way, so the way essena is speaking is perfectly normal

I don’t think her thought patterns are disorganised at all. She’s talking and reflecting at the same time. This is a conversation, not a soliloquy. It’s very dynamic as she is looking back at her younger self and recalling how she was feeling and interpreting these experiences as her older self.

I totally relate to the idea of just hating yourself so every piece of criticism seems like it must be true. Feeling like you're arrogant if you believe any praise too. And I really feel like social media exacerbates that. Most people talk without a filter and only know you as a 2 dimensional figure. People treat you like a book character that they can critique rather than a human who hasn't been expertly crafted. And most of all - because no one really knows you, you don't know who to trust, criticism just seems more trustworthy for some reason

I agree too. And also people need to remember that criticism online is a two way street. You are entitled to your criticism or opinion but then the person also has the right if they want to use the critique or not. I notice some people online get kind of upset if they don't follow the critique and automatically think"Oh this person can't take criticism." Now I know some people really do try to be kind when giving critiques and those people are awesome but if it's kind of told in a mean way people don't have to take it if they don't want. And I think most of us try to be better everyday anyway. 💕

I never felt like she didn’t answer a question, just that she answered them as best as she could. Like when she was talking about tumblr. Spot fucking on. Tumblr was so different from other social media. A lot of people never even posted photos of themselves and it was a purely community based platform. I’m not saying it was a perfect experience. I definitely think it has created some strange phenomenons such as a demand for safe spaces. But I still to this day think tumblr was a very special place and I understand her wanting to go back to that. Also, good job Tiffany. I don’t know if it was just that her scattered thoughts spoke to me because that’s how my brain feels a lot... or it was how you organized the video. But I enjoyed this.

I completely understood everything she said, even the seemingly half finished thoughts and the trail offs. She clearly has a lot to say and it may be difficult to externalise those thoughts in a way that is as universally understood as it is internally clear. People have different cognitive strengths. If you couldn’t understand anything she said, maybe you’re not attuned to understanding people who think and process like her just yet. Also, having an affective tone of voice or speech patterns is not one and the same as being unclear. Assuming no one can understand her because you couldn’t understand her is pretty bold of you.

I used to be so jealous of people that got popular on the internet... but once I got nearly a thousand followers on Tumblr I started feeling really uncomfortable? Like I didn't want that many people looking at me all the time. I didn't want that many people judging me all the time. I would get some really nasty anonymous messages. So at that point I decided to go through all of my followers and soft block anyone I didn't want following me. Well several years later I've left and deleted all of my social media. No tumblr, no facebook, no instagram, no twitter. At this point I go on a hair forum, I watch KZitem and comment but I don't upload anything, and I have a small Discord chat with real life friends. That's really about it. And I guess I technically have a Reddit account, but I don't use it very often. My life is all the better for leaving. I think Forum websites are pretty different from social media anyway, at least in my experience. there's less of this obsession with likes and comments and subscribers, who is or isn't your friend... And generally people are more open and honest. And at least the forum I use there's a lot of rules about being polite to everyone, so it stops a lot of the petty drama. There's no real need for us to present ourselves in a better light than we really are. It just kind of feels like any real life support group I've been to, but the conversations are through text instead of in real life. I just wish more of the internet was like that. Ime I think Reddit is a lot more similar social media than other forum site in some respects... which is why I don't really use it. And there is a lot of drama and arguing, it's really annoying. I mostly have an account just so that I can comment on posts that have to do with my home town. I don't like people fishing for upvotes and gold etc so I stay away from those parts as much as I can. Long ass comment for no real reason. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

I'm her age and I remember following her and hundreds almost a thousand other influencers but she was one of my favorite. I used to think everyone had this perfect amazing life everyday and feel shit about my own life. Just when I was considering deleting my ig and fb page but feeling fear that I'd be left out of everything fun Essena made that video and quit social media. It blew my mind. Because she had almost half a million followers, tons of subscribers and everyone seemed to love her. I was inspired by the fact that she had the courage to let go of fame and the money it could bring her, none of which I had. I had about 2K subs... and honestly it was mostly creepy men and guys I didn't even know. Essena woke me up to the reality, her explaining how influencers work and how they filter, edit and carefully pick each photo and text to make everything look perfect, happy and together awesome.... it was like she gave me the biggest gift. I realized I had been fooled and that my life is meaningful too that I'm beautiful too. I quit all my social media even youtube for years. Deleted everything. And my life changed. I went from being a depressed insecure, anxious young girl who almost never left her room to actually going out and living my life for the first time. Essena made some mistakes but who doesn't? Especially at that age... I've made tons of mistakes over the past years, good intentions bad results. I wish her good luck and happiness in life.

She might not have “meant” to scam people, but I do think she kind of did. This is an interesting interview, thanks for posting it !

Yep what i gatherered from this is that she collected the money, realized she didnt want to do that website, had some fiancial struggle, thought about how there are those 10000 sitting when rent is due and used it to survive. I can understand it but it is still quite dishonest

@Secret Asian Man I agree completely. Wether you were a confused teen with money problems is no legitimate reason to take 5k from people (and who knows if it was really 5k or 10k after all) and live off of it, when that money was given to her with other things in mind. Being in an emotionally bad place still doesn't justify that in hindsight. She kept talking about her feelings and I can imagine her situation. Still, I will call it by name, she scammed people and could not even say sorry. I know she wants to seem "real" and honest, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know how I would feel about a series with her. She doesn't seem like she has fully bounced back emotionally.

she def did unintentionally. i understand why. she needed to survive and pay her bills. reality is like that. it's not black and white. i saw how she shifted the blame. she's probably unaware she's not taking ownership to people please. i people please a lot. i've noticed i avoid my wrongdoings and never take ownership. i don't want to painted as the bad guy in the narrative. sometimes we are though. that doesn't make us terrible people. what makes a terrible person is continuing the toxic behavior. taking ownership for your own actions is key. being able to say "what i did was morally wrong" takes guts. there's nothing wrong with admitting your fuck ups.

@@alialo7322 100% agree. she's not taking ownership of her actions. she wants to people please and is overthinking. i do the same thing. it's a bad habit of mine. it's something i'm working on. once you're conditioned to behave that way, it's difficult to break out of it. it takes guts to say "what i did was morally wrong and i have shitty traits". she's most likely unaware that she's not taking responsibility. her ego is so hurt that her ego is putting up masks to hide the reality. acknowledging your shitty behavior isn't bad. we are conditioned to believe it's bad. self-awareness and maturity is healthy. i see myself in her a lot.

I haven't finished this yet, but what's absolutely nuts to me is that I literally just rewatched her video about quitting yesterday, just because it was the kind of content I wanted to watch at that moment... and now you've posted this video. I love how sometimes random things align like that.

I remember that bought a spin-skin-care-tool just because of her. I actually never used it + it still was originally wrapped in my shelf. A few years ago I had asked myself what actually happened to her later but couldn't really find any information. Today I thought of her again, found this video, unwrapped the skin brushes, added some batteries and am brushing my face while watching this XD Personally I think she would have had a great chance to actually change the game a bit for the better and turn social media into something more real but I completely understand that it probably was too much for her in her situation. We were all so young. Glad to see that she is ok!

20:50 she hits the nail on the head. We are quick to blame social media for the negative things in life when the reality is that most people need to live a life beyond social media. Your goal shouldn’t be to live your best life just to post something about it. You live your best life to fulfill yourself.

Wow, it's incredible to hear from her again! I was a huge fan of her, but I recently quit social media myself this year and I remember thinking back to her experience and feeling inspired to go ahead with quitting it. It's so nice to hear from her again.

Essena is so pretty and I love how candid she is about her own personal growth. I could tell that she is really passionate and determined with her current degree and path. I definitely wish her the best and hope that she continues to express her voice through media like this

These instagram people aren't real. Even the prettiest people look normal after you see them five or more times. Because we are all human. On instagram, they always look like you saw them for the first time, shocking beauty that you can only sustain by being in a picture.

I think that her not having her hair bleached and no make up on makes a difference. That's something instagram girls always have (dyed hair, makeup, facetune). So she feels free by not having to do none of that.
