The return ---- Difficult moments in the lives of those who came from the former colonies. The integration of the 500,000 Portuguese who returned from the former colonies in Africa was the largest repatriation in European decolonisation when measured against the country's population. It is a successful collective story, points out sociologist Rui Pena Pires, born in Huambo (formerly Nova Lisboa) and author of reference research on the assimilation of the so-called returnees. The people with "experience of making countries" and who "valued themselves and educated their children", as described in 1976 to DN by the then minister Almeida Santos, himself a returnee from Mozambique, modernised the villages and towns in the interior, provided experts for the faster expansion of Health and Education, launched thousands of new businesses, transformed radio and television and accelerated the liberalisation of customs.
