The fact that the ring was left lying in the middle of the most pristine & peaceful haven is just pure literary genius on the part of Tolkien. Even in the most quiet and lovely places lies a potential seed of war. Corrupting the most ordinary of folk.

This scene was originally supposed to be a flashback in Two Towers, after Frodo calls Gollum by his old name in the Dead Marshes. Peter Jackson decided to make it the opening scene in Return of the King instead, which I think is brilliant for a number of reasons: 1. It subverts expectations. Fellowship opened with the Battle of the Last Alliance, and the Balrog fight kicked off Two Towers. How does Return of the King start? Two hobbits fishing. 2. It reminds the audience of how powerful and evil the Ring is, and why it must be destroyed. Within seconds of laying eyes on it Sméagol and Deagol are at each other's throats. 3. Smeagol's transformation into Gollum is one of the creepiest scenes in movie history. Jackson's horror movie credentials are undeniable, and this helps set the tone for the darkest film of the trilogy. 4. Anyone who hasn't read the books is now going to be worried that Frodo and Sam may end up killing each other over the Ring.

There’s a fifth reason: The Two Towers make you feel sympathetic towards Sméagol. But then you watch this movie, and it reveals to you how he got the ring. This scene definitely messed with me as a kid. I was about eight years old when this film came out (probably shouldn't have been watching it that young) and this scene in particular was the first instance where I realized that violence wasn't this heroic, clean, righteous thing. It was nasty, brutal, personal. Watching a family member viciously strangle his kin over such a small item with so much malice, with dirt on his fingers stuck with me. The shot lingers as Deagol struggles amid the muck and his life force fades away, and it taught me that this world isn't as orderly and safe as my childhood had been. Really powerful scene.

I’ll never forget how cool it was, as a huge Tolkien geek, obviously knowing the plot and the characters, to be sitting in the theatre behind an adorable young couple, who were clearly experiencing “The Return of the King”, and probably “The Lord of the Rings,” in any form for the first time. When Deagol says “Sméagol, I got one” there was a moment of silence, and then the young lady goes, in a very whisper-quiet, no -disturbing way, “OMG that’s Gollum! Him, it’s Gollum before he was Gollum!” to which the husband excitingly exclaimed “no way...no way! Omg You are right, it’s him!” I was just happy for these people to experience that intriguing moment of realization, and the genius of both Tolkien and Jackson in that moment, and it’s silly but it made the moment so memorable for me...it helps me forget that I balled like a dumb giant baby at the “Grey Havens” scene...🙂

I just realized. The real reason for Déagol’s death is because during the fight with Sméagol he absolutely refused to let go of the ring or have it be anywhere other than in the protection of his tightly closed fist. After losing the ring once and picking it back up, he tried to kill Sméagol first by strangling him with one hand whilst keeping the ring at his side. Sméagol, however had two free hands and was able to get out of his cousin’s chokehold only to put him in one. Whilst suffocating, Dèagol tried to fight back using again only one hand as he wouldn’t dare use the other for anything but to protect the ring from being taken from him ultimately leading to his asphyxiation and death.

Tolkien is often criticized by fans of 'modern' fantasy for his archetypal characters and plots. This criticism misses the point. Tolkien never intended his characters and plots to be 'realistic', so to speak. He intended them to be representative of ideas. That's why this scene is so disturbing. Why are these people fighting to the death over an inanimate object? The object represents addiction, temptation, irrationality and evil. We immediately recognize the power of evil in this scene to distort people's wills and pervert them to the point where they don't know who they are anymore, and how fast it can happen.

There's also the fact that Tolkein's works revolutionized fantasy as we know it. Tolkein's characters may look archetypal now, but that's because we've seen them so much in works inspired by him. Bilbo - as you said, he had it for decades, used it frequently, and was still able to give it up of his own free will (with a little help). Sam - possessed it on the outskirts of Mordor itself. Granted, did not bear it very long, but still felt its temptation... and gave it up with minimal struggle. Frodo - endured its weight the longest, with a wound from a morgul blade, that harmed him both physically and mentally. Only succumbed to temptation in the very heart of Mordor and STILL didn't go into a murderous rage. Boromir - succumbed to temptation, BUT, managed to return to his senses. Faramir - take your pick (movies vs. novels); he either succumbed to temptation but returned to his senses, OR, was wise enough to renounce the Ring before it even had the chance to tempt him. IMO, either would suffice. Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn - resisted, resisted, resisted. And, on the other end of the scale... Isildur - in his own way, was seduced just as quickly as Deagol and Smeagol (aka Dumb and Dumber). Then again, he didn't murder Elrond or Cirdan to keep it, so... good job, Izzy, I guess?

I never realized the foreshadowing of the hook in the worm before. All about how addiction twists you into something else, takes you over. Sean Astin said his portrayal of Sam with Frodo at Mt. Doom was inspired by someone watching a friend give in to addiction, and that last "Don't let go, Mr. Frodo" as he clearly wants to pitch himself in after the ring. Smeagol doesn't even feel the fire, his eyes are only for the ring. Opiates are horrible, god bless anyone who travels through that hell.

In one of the early edits of this scene, there's a music track by Howard Shore that plays through the Smeagol-Deagol fight but when they reviewed it, they felt it overshadowed the effect that the Ring was having on them (i.e. it felt like two guys just fighting for no particular reason), so they removed the music and played up the Ring effect sounds instead, to make it clear that the Ring was doing this. The music track is still on the Return of the King CD.

This is probably the scene that show's the ring's mind control and temptation the most. Two cousins who love each other and are otherwise normal are suddenly and inexplicably driven to murder to have the ring. I'd say that's a pretty powerful and dangerous ring. With the exception of the scene from Fellowship of the Ring where Bilbo momentarily attacks Frodo to get the ring back when he sees it in Rivendel, no other scene really shows off just how tempting and corrupting the rings of power really were.

Originally they were going to play a Howard Shore musical piece over the part where Smeagol strangles Deagol. But when they reviewed the scene in editing, it didn't feel the Ring was influencing what was going on: it just felt like two guys trying to kill each other. So they removed the music and played up the heartbeat/sound effects instead to make it clear that it was the Ring that was doing this. The original music is still on the ROTK soundtrack and you might be able to find an alternate take of the scene on youtube.

When you think about it Deagol was the lucky one here in the long run since Sméagol had to live for centuries as his mind was twisted by the ring and his body became more animal like plus having to spend many of those centuries on his own

If you not noticed 3:36 . When Smeagol takes the Ring from Deagol's hand Sauron speak on Black Speech: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, Ash nazg gimbatul" It's part of original: "Ash nazg durbatulûk, Ash nazg gimbatul, Ash nazg thrakatulûk, Agh burzum-ishi krimpatul" This words are engraved on the Ring and glowe in fire. On human speech they mean: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all And in the Darkness bind them." Such a crazy detail...

This scene was added at Andy Serkis's insistence because he wanted the audience to see that, yes, Smeagol did look (well, relatively) normal once. And I'm glad he did, because this scene is excellent. It still ticks me off that Serkis didn't get an Oscar for this performance.

After seeing this scene, I think both Smèagol and Dèagol were condemned: thet both saw the Ring and both were corrupted by it. I think if Dèagol managed to kill Smèagol, he would have been the one turning into Gollum

Definitely. You could see that by the way Deagol was staring at the ring. Plus he also tried to choke Smeagol

2:00 That is one of the most brilliant pieces of acting I've ever seen. How this carefree face is struck with absolute seduction. Serkis does a amazing job here, and also director wise, a bad director would probably suffice with a more blunt reaction but it's so smooth.

part of this scene was just how powerfull the ring's corruption is. Put the ring unto a dinner table of 2 kids,1 mother ,1 father and 2 elders for example, two minutes later = everyone kills each other until one gets the ring, becomes immortal and gets tormented their entire life like gollum was

It’s so creepy how the tone of this scene starts off heartwarming and comforting seeing two innocent hobbits fishing. But then it becomes dark and suspenseful the moment Sméagol sees the ring and starts fighting with Deagol as he tries to take it, eventually killing him being consumed and driven by the ring’s power.
