What happens when you take a number, reverse it and add them together? Over and over and over? Something quite SYMMETRICAL emerges. Except for 196... and no one knows why. #shorts
If you start with 1 and keep adding positive numbers to it, eventually the result will be another number that is higher than 1

This is actually wrong in two ways: Firstly 196 is not the only base 10 number that is not known to result in a palindrome at some point. It's just the smallest one. Trivial examples for other numbers with that property are of course all numbers from the sequence that results from adding a number with its reverse starting with 196. But there are other candidates as well, 295 being the next one. Secondly we do not actually know that 196 does not result in a palindrome. This has been tested for a billion iterations, resulting in a number with several hundred million digits, but no one was able to actually proof the property until now. If you want to know more, look up Lychrel Numbers - that's what those arecalled. The current record for the most iterations needed to actually reach a palindrome is 293 by the way. (293 steps - not the number 293.)

For those curious, numbers that don’t form palindromes are referred to as Lychrel numbers. Or, well, we usually refer to numbers like 196 as Lychrel candidates, since we have yet to PROVE they don’t form palindromes. Ended up learning quite a bit about these in undergrad, even made a little checker in base Java of all things to find all candidates under 10,000. Interestingly, everything under 10k takes at most 25 flips to become a palindrome (if it’s not a candidate), so you actually only need to check up to 25.

The people who've studied the problem distinguish between numbers that eventually merge into the same sequence of non-palindromes, and numbers that aren't known to - and hypothesise that there are infinitely many such families, which they label by their lowest member - if 196 eventually reaches a palindrome, then so do 295, 394, 493, 592, 691, etc.

It's true, and more accurately it's a multiple of 9. Think of any two-digit number "AB", where A and B are the digits, as 10*A + B. Then the reverse number is 10*B + A. Subtracting the two gets you 9*A - 9*B.

Numbers with that property are called Lychrel numbers and their existence is still not yet proven (in base 10). This means that we suspect that they will never form a palindrome but no one still knows for sure. Moreover 196 is NOT the only candidate with this property. Other examples are 879, 1997.

A quick and very simple, easy proof that there are other numbers than 196 with this property is assuming 196 has this property, and then calculating 196 + 691 = 887. This number must either be a palindrome, converge to one, or lychrel. It is not a palindrome, and 196 which is a lychrel number (does not converge to a palindrome) does reach 887, it also must be a lychrel number. aka iterate once from 196 and it's not hard to grasp why 887 also never reaches a palindrome

@@t_kon It's an intuitive second half of an inductive proof. You're right, it's not a complete proof that lychrel numbers exist at all. My original wording 2 months ago appears to be slightly inaccurate, since i do claim that to be a proof, when the comment i was replying to specifically says we don't know. The first half of proving the base case (such as 196) isn't proven, though you can be fairly reasonable it probably won't converge just by iterating a couple million times or so.

I found his confidence of 196 being the only number quite weird. When I ran a basic python script to check this I realised you can't prove this by experimenting cause this loop will run a million times and keep on running after that too for a number like 196. And 196 isn't the only number either, 295, 394,... also run a million loops and keep going. (I'll add more numbers one by one)

So would the next number be 493? Edit: Yeah, I actually was following the pattern of nos. (Like 196, 295, 394,... such that the next one would have the successor of the previous no. at the hundredth place and the predecessor of the same at the one's place.) I tried this and guess the notion I remarked was proper (might only be to some extent). So, proly the next nos. would be 592, 691, 790,... Huh?
@mgA757
2 жыл бұрын
Lo, there's another interesting fact too! As I added these numbers which both of us commented on, all of them first summed up to 887, 1675, 7436, etc. And as we go to the next lowest tens, that is when these nos. continue to include 689, 588, and so on, their sum is obeying the trend too - they sum up to 1675 first and then starts again the fashion!
@mgA757

Hey, I found more about 'em! Here's what I got: A Lychrel number is a natural number that cannot form a palindrome through the iterative process of repeatedly reversing its digits and adding the resulting numbers.
