@@sblevy0229 There is no grey area. This is just Max beating himself up over his family's death. Max had no reason to kill his family, they were the light of his life.

It wasn't until they brought it up in Alan wake and when I saw retrospectives on it that the faces stood out to me as odd. They had a charm to them too. Max Payne was a comic bookie type game. So the faces worked with the narrative. I actually missed not seeing Sam lakes face in the sequel. Imo lake is the face of max payne.

Max Payne 1 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein were both known for having great photo textures. Most games bacj then used hand drawn/painted textures and only games like Max Payne 1 were presenting what looked to be a photorealistic faces, clothing and environments such that we could mistake Max Payne 1 screenshots in our magazines for stills from the Matrix which was still very fresh in our minds and the most state of the art action we had ever seen back then and frankly, not many action movies after have come close to any of its action scenes since then with Kill Bill vol. 1 yakuza fight being one of them. Max Payne 2 also looked very high poly for its time, much more face detail than we were used to seeing, plus early physics, ragdoll/motion blending.

@@tenebriswoof8675 >"don't get it why people get pissed off at this game" Me personally, I can live with the changes in setting and narrative, but what annoys me EXTREMELY about the game is how often it takes control away from the player. There's a damn cutscene every 10 seconds, half of the time you want to open a door, there's a cutscene of Max doing it for you and rushing into the room full of enemies like an idiot, getting surrounded and then you can start playing again (the door behind you magically locks of course and you can never go back). Compared with the first two games, which gave you a ton of freedom and in how you wanted to tackle the levels and interactivity, this is just infuriating.
@KvltKommando
8 ай бұрын
@@tenebriswoof8675 because it's not really as replayable as the past games because of the forced cutscene nightmare and the writing is worse. Max Payne games never had weird quicktime event sequences, or several minute long cutscenes that can't be skipped. We had graphic novels and a very small number of short cutscenes, like less than 20 seconds usually. The euphoria physics can wig out at times and make Max do weird shit., If the game let you just go from action scene to action scene skipping every cutscene I might rank it higher than max payne 2 but because it doesn't let you just run through killing, it's lame because frankly the Max Payne 3 writing sucks. The plot sucks, the dialogue sucks, the monologues suck, even the metaphors suck compared to the original games. Max Payne 2's plot was already stretching believability with Max getting back to work as a cop after gunning down hundreds of people around a densely populated city but you could respect it as the slightly artsy slightly dumb action movie that it was. Max Payne 3 focused way too much on the mopey aspect of his personality and never really explained his motivation to go to Brazil, like some guy just sees you in a bar and tells you move to another continent and work as bodyguard and you just go OK. Sure.. But really 90% of my complaint with the game is the forced cutscenes, I could ignore the writing and unmemorable lines if I could simply SKIP all the cutscenes.

I just remember Neil Druckmann and Kojima having a little spat a little while back after Druckmann said in an interview that he didn't like the way the Metal Gear Solid games handled female characters. I just think it sucks because these guys are all on the same page with wanting to make games not simply for profit but to actually be compelling in narrative and gameplay, so why not get along? Man, this was so satisfying to watch. What a fantastic video for a fantastic trilogy! With the first game I do remember an interview where I believe Sam Lake was talking about the thought processes behind various details they put into the game. With Max's shitty aiming, that was intentional because they wanted to encourage players to go in guns blazing rather than stopping to carefully aim. It's was inspired by his love of Hong Kong cinema and especially the film Hard Boiled. I really thought all three games were incredible and just fun as hell. It's a miracle we got to have a third game, and although it's different in a lot of ways I'd say Rockstar handled it as if they were fans of the series and capped it off respectfully and with a loud bang. That ending was just beautiful and I do appreciate that Max was able to walk off into the sunset like a fucking legend. All the money and resources that Rockstar put into that game really showed, too, I mean holy shit man dem graphics.

No more dark alleys and rainy nights but instead Sunny sao paulo, vibrant discos and Max in an alien environment. The guilt of his family's death still haunts him and then he lost Mona. As a kid or teen you'd think why doesn't he just get over it but growing up you realize you can't really just bury the past that easily and definitely not Max's nightmarish past. The third game gives him a new purpose to strive for but it becomes increasingly evident he's bad at saving the women. But anyhow it was a great game.

This was the game I wanted SO bad but never got... until several generation later and I was able to buy old hardware just to play this game correctly, LOVED it, and LOVED the sequels, I'd rather have a 4th installment than GTA6... that's a BOLD statement.

Max Payne 1 is pretty impressive especially for 2001, I feel like I could genuinely play this game today and legitimately have fun, the diving and bullet time mechanics just still are not outdated, concepts that most games still haven’t put in their games today.. the animation to get out of the way for bullets at all costs gives you more of a realistic and immersive experience

Max payne 2 and 3 feels like action games, max payne 1 feels like a real life story with action elements. and max payne 2 with the goofy run animation and the over the top bullet time just made it really unimmersive for me.

I love the first two games, they're one of the titles that I grew up with and I've gained an even greater appreciation for them when I replayed them 5 years ago (since then I replay them annually). However, I take issue with the third game because it's unnecessary, you can argue the same thing about 2, but that one further explored Max's traumas, his inability to move on from the grief and loss that he experienced in the first game, and it also takes a deeper dive into his relationship with Mona, Vlad and the whole main motif of predetermination were done so good, especially the ending for the game in which he states: "I had a dream of my wife. She was dead. But it was all right.", giving an end to all the tragedy he has been caught up in and finally allowing him to move on. Like you state in the video, it's the perfect ending to both the two games and to his character, but why then does Rockstar undo it in order to take him to South America where he is caught up in the cartel business? I see what they were going for, but would have preferred it if they made a new one-off IP, instead of using Max Payne for their new project. Especially when you see that it's just another Rockstar game, it lacks all the stylistic and surrealist touches that made the first two games so unique, and that made those first two games so much more than just another cliche noir story taking from the greats and not really doing much to innovate on the formula. I just see it as a game that should not be, not as a Max Payne entry, at least. The first two were great and put Remedy on the map, had all the traits that would make their future games so appealing and interesting to play and dig deeper into, Alan Wake and Control are some of my favorite games and I can't wait to see what they're going to do with those 2 IPs in the future, AW2 is happening this year after a decade of wait so I'm quite happy to finally get to play it and to see what they have in store for Alan Wake in the sequel. You made a really good video covering the three games and I like how you praise Sam Lake as one of the greatest video game writers and auteurs because he definitely is and is one of the few video game writers that knows how to utilize the medium to tell a story only video games could. That's what I've always appreciated about him, especially when Remedy experimented with it later on in their career, Control being the best example. All in all, I love the recent trend of so many people talking about Max Payne games, it's a delight to see for a big fan such as myself, I just really dislike the third one. Good job!

Great comment. I agree to all of this. I think on its own Max Payne 3 is a very competent and fun game....but it's not a good max Payne game. As you say Sam Lake has a very particular style of writing that is at times poetic. The third one thinks it can just write max as depressed and slap the name on the case. It undoes all the character development from the first two to carry the story. It felt more like a die hard game than a Max Payne game.

Sam Lake and Remedy is the greatest game dev EVER!. Alan Wake...Alan Wake DLC Max Payne Control Quantum Break All the day original(No requested one like CrossfireX) is incredible. Both on the technical and narrative aspects. They are always breaking something cool,fresh and just unique. Max Payne - Narrative,Slow mo gameplay Alan Wake - Book like Storytelling,Narrative and stun use and representation of lighting. Quantum Break: Superpower, Time travell Control: Superpower, but on a more "human way". Instead of having a super human(Superman,Batman money and resources,Flash) you got a Human with psycho power who haven't be explore or do in ages in gaming. Doesn't matter what they do. They will always find a way to make you go "WOOOW!!!. WHY NOBODY DID THIS BEFORE?!. THIS IS SO DAMN COOL"

41:04 to add to that, this game came in 2001. the Remedy team, just some game designers working on their computers all day, flew from Finland to NYC in 1999 with expensive camera's, to take some reference material that would be used in the game, they only needed to walk everywhere in New York and take pictures. Since it was the 90s and the culture of Mob films were prevalent at the time, and crime rates were high in New York, Especially at night, especially at the places they were going, just to get that "first hand experience", so much so they got a help of Ex-NYPD police officers as body guards. also i dunno if you know but Matrix 1 was a ginormous universal pop culture acclaimed film, and having a game that is like that movie was a big part of fun playing this game. it's now in retrospectives people care about bullet spray and all that stuff, i don't really listen to those criticisms because they're not what's important.

A little fun fact for why that art style plays a major part for the story at 6:13. The reason for this is bcs Remedy didn't have hardware/technology powerful enough to constantly render in-game cutscenes at the time. It's very likely they couldn't afford it either. Waiting for more powerful tech wasn't an option either and they had to get the game out on time, so those painting-like art panels were made to compensate for the lack of power.

16:21 i dunno if youll cover it here, but i always see it get overlooked that it also pioneered a certain amount of environmental physics. Like having debris fall at different rates depending on what the material is. Paper bits fall slower than wooden bits, etc.
