The 4001 ended in 1981 but the 4003 started in 1981 as well. The 81-84/5 4003's had a different truss rod system and it was changed in 1985 to the 4003 model we see today. The fretboard is actually Cocobolo wood and Rickenbacker had their own special lacquer that was called conversion varnish and tghey kept that secret formula secret.

I've got a couple of my dream basses -- a mid-1980s Steinberger XP2 fretless, a 7-string Conklin I defretted myself, and a 5-string Stingray -- but a Rick is still on my bucket list. I love Geddy & Al.

I actually have a 1984 Burgundy 4003. The earliest 4003s had a two piece pickguard, which I wish they stuck with, since it makes working on the pots and wiring more accessible. I soldered in a wire to bypass the cap that removes low end from the bridge pickup. I'd put in the push pull on newer Ricks, but I'd rather keep it as original as possible.

lower output bass guitar pickups produce a warmer and sweeter sound, especially if they are the passive type, I always thought. Much like saying that 30 watt celestion speakers in a Marshall guitar cab have a richer sound and have more presence than 75 watt celestion speakers do.

Ah, Lemmy Geddy Lee. Lol did you mispronounce Kilmister? I met him a few years before he died at the Rainbow on Sunset in LA. He was just sitting there, having a drink by himself. This was after I played the Roxy next door. I said to him, OMG you're Lemmy KiLLMister! I butchered his name (I was kinda drunk) He joked if he was under arrest and we just kicked it for a few minutes. Good guy.

I can't put into words how offensive and dumb it is for ppl that loves rock but don't like the Beatles try to erase their influence musically and all the other boxes ppl forget to tick... Paul was the first big musician to ever have one of those, and he's also known for being one of the GOAT bass players...
