Most of my favorite photos are like that. Simply quick shots of everyday things happening, things that caught my eye, such as an interesting looking person or event.

Brilliant, Jon! Loved the video and the ruminations on the art. Keep them coming, mate. :-)

I think you are on the way Jon...When I discovered Daido it turned my photography upside down in a good way. It freed me of trying to make a perfect photo in the Ansel Adams sense and allowed me to just shoot away and experiment and have fun with my camera. Long live Wabi-Sabi.

I am now going back to film just as Diado stuck with throughout his career and that has been liberating again.

The cyclist shot is quite good. Forget detail, capture life’s rhythm. Keep it up.

That is wisely spoken. And there is a wide gradual slope from Anselm Adams' clarity to Moriyama and even further. I would even go further and postulate that a realistic and technically perfect reproduction of the real world is no art! Art ist refraction of the world through your artistic medium - a camera and the artistic mind.

It also, in my humble opinion, ends the argument in artist circles that photography isn’t an art form.

Just pickup moriyamas book record. Amazing shots. The raw nature of these photographs express the true feelings of place. light and time. Using minimal equipment.

Hi Jon This is the first time I've watched one of your video's and it was a very well thought out and informative video!! The Ricoh GR iii has intrigued me for several years. The concerns I read about on dust/dirt being sucked in through the lens onto the sensor keeps me from taking even though some GR owners have reported no issues. I like your thoughts on photography especially that photographs dont have to be completely sharp. Again a great video! Best of luck in your photography journey! Duane

Great discussion on imperfections in photos. My monochrome shots have no details in the shadows, large areas of negative space, very high contrast, silhouettes, etc. I take a different approach to color. Have you tried the highlight exposure on the GRIII?
@photoexplorer

Yes some of the shots used the highlight weighted metering. I think it was the speed in which shots were taken that I had to get used with and I think initially in the city shots I needed more compensation dialled in to get even greater contrast. This was a little more successful in my final location. When I take my time that weighted metering is usually more successful, it will need more practice at speed and adapting more quickly to the varying light conditions.

Nice video and photos! I'm thinking of doing a Daido's style street photography video as well :D. My weapon of choice is the Ricoh GRD IV. I find the smaller and older sensor really brings out the character and the mood of Daido's wabi sabi style. Cheers!
