Worked at a radiator and air conditioning shop for a few years, don't use silicon on cooling systems. Cleaning out radiators I would find silicone worms blocking the tubes. Use aviation form-a-gasket.

Good info. I like real world experience... I agree, you do not want to go overboard . I do love the aviation from Permatex, such a superior product compared to most. Impervious to so many elements, gas oil and ethylene glycol being the ones I am most concerned with. But the list goes on. So, great advice I agree. I actually am using this on this gasket, although the title does say otherwise. The real point was put it on one side. Thanks for your comment and good information.

@@fastflo1I didn't see the Permatex first view. For what it's worth I'm qualified and experienced 25 years in the trade. Nah, smear that beautiful black shit both sides of the gasket, the tackiness also helps keep it in place while fitting water pump and thermostat housings. Do you want the gasket to seal or do you want to be a little bitch ? Cleaning gaskets is all part of mechanical repairs, personally I'd rather a part seal for its service life and cry later. Pressure test before reassemble, timing belts...and those arsehole that thought timing chain driven water pumps was a good idea. Cheers

In my opinion putting gasket maker on a gasket is the same as double gasketing and using gasket maker on places that are transition like timing case to head so the valve cover seals property then that makes sense but I find that double gasketing when doing a gasket maker on gasket is a no no
@fastflo1
Жыл бұрын
Well , nice point. I do not consider it a double gasket though, not in thickness at least. And I really do not use it as a gasket maker. Mostly just a little to make up for a gap or void the gasket may not catch. I actually use Permatex aviation on most my stuff, super thin like high tack. Impervious to pretty much everything engine related.

You got it. And mine is the 82 so stock with the double row timing chain. I love these trucks. Mine is a 4x4 5 speed 22r. Unstoppable.... The best one I ever had was in an 84 Celica. 22 re. It had over 500k on it when I sold it. Still running like a top. Unreal.....

Instead of gasket sealer use a clean grease on both sides of the gasket. Much easier to clean. Live life simple.

What is the logic of putting it on one side? You’re worried it leaking on the pump face but have every confidence the engine won’t leak? See how stupid that is? Either do both or none. Mostly put them on dry and never been an issue. (Except when the face was a bit chewed out and rough)
@fastflo1

Great question. So you did watch the video? About the pump or the block.....The block is going to be machined from the factory. The tolerance will be much closer than a pump will be. The block has less flex than a pump. It is a block, it has more metal. In this case it is a steel block and aluminum pump. If metal were perfect you would not need a gasket. A gasket makes up for unevenness. If one side is worse like you stated in the end, than the addition of silicone will help seal what a gasket cant. So, how stupid is this? Not stupid at all, it is actually really smart. It prevents leaks, and it comes off the block without having to scrape it off. What is stupid about that? Do you want to scrape it off your engine? And if I have to do both sides, or none, than it might leak with none like you said. . Is that smart? Then if I have to do both sides like you said, I will now have to clean the block off which defeats the whole point. So how smart is that really if you think about it? Also put it on both or none? You can put it one side if you want. Just think about that for a second... Really read your comment and think about it.... I have also put them on dry, one side, both sides, with every color and kind....... It is easier to take off if its not smeared all over the engine. Next time you are scraping your block, remember the video and follow the instructions so you wont have to do it next time..... Bottom line is whether you do or not, you will get something you work on that you will have to scrape off that somebody else put on. And that is why I made the video, so you don't screw yourself working on your own stuff. But if you like scraping gasket sealer off your motor, continue to do so and have fun, its a free country . Enjoy

Sooo many stupid. 1: water pump surface is new. Old pitted, possibly whizzy wheeled surface is the side needing sealing. 2: don't use a cheep new Chinese pump that will fail in 10,000 miles. 3: those strange Chinese paper fiber gaskets are absolutely Guaranteed to fail. 4: Aisin Water Pump - WPT-017 is the factory Toyota 1979-84 that you should use. The gasket is amazing ... Dry

yea why my new water pump with less than 200miles on it started leaking i took it off it was just on the gasket and they tqed it to hard on some bolts and pressed parts of the gasket and caused a leak if y use sealer on both sides it wont do that....

Well, if they over torque it I would put it on both sides probably. But on my own stuff I just do the one side. It seems to be pretty good.
