They tell you right at the beginning where the video tape came from -- Katie and her friends went to that motel in the mountains (and had no idea they were in a cabin directly above the well where Samara died). The teens wanted to tape a football game while they were out, but when they came back the creepy images were on it instead. Samara's nightmares got "recorded" onto the tape, along with her putting a curse on anyone who watches it. So those four teens were the very first people to watch it.

The original DVD had a clever main menu prank. There was a typical main menu loop that played before you watched the film and after the credits it goes back to what seems to be the same menu. But! This version of the menu is the same for about fifteen seconds until the sound of a VERY loud phone ringing.

Samara has an ability called thoughtography, which is where she can think about something, and it can be recorded, or sometimes it looks like it's burned on paper, on walls, on film negatives, or on her cursed video. You're correct, Jen. The color scheme for The Ring does look very grayish for a reason, the same reason the film was made in Seattle, Washington. Director Gore Verbinski wanted the make the atmosphere of the film look as bleak as possible, which is why he chose Seattle for the location and made the color scheme and atmosphere look very gray and cloudy. Being from Canada, you probably know what I mean. 😜 LOL **runs** 🏃

Thanks for finally getting to The Ring, Jen! 😃Yes, The Ring is a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror film, Ringu, which I definitely think you should watch as well. The original Japanese version goes into greater detail as to why Samara(Sadako in the Japanese version) could do the things she could do, and goes much deeper into the whole theme of paranormal psychic abilities. There's also another Japanese horror film called Ju-On from 2002 that also had an American remake called The Grudge(2004) with Sarah Michelle Gellar, which I also recommend. 😁

I remember picking up the Japanese version on a whim when it was first released on DVD by Tartan in the early 2000s, and watching it on the ancient CRT TV I inherited from my Grandad. With no prior knowledge going in I think it might’ve been one of the most terrifying experiences I’ve ever had watching a film (the top being Threads). The sound design is just second-to-none, a trait it shares with Ju-on. The remake was out on DVD in the US before it even released theatrically over here so I imported it but I ended up not finding it quite as gripping as the original. I have a feeling the inverse is true as well, and watching the original after the remake might lose some of its potency. Ring, Ju-on, Audition, The Eye and more all made the 2000s a boom time for Asian horror in the west and personally I’d love to see you cover more in the genre.

I've been on some weird journey of watching quite a bit of different The Ring movie reactions lately, and now I came across yours. Even without watching it through other people I've also seen the movie quite a few times myself. I'll always remember the first time. I was around 15 years old and went to a local film rental place with a girl I knew back then. It was the time when VHS tapes were still a thing. We left the place with this movie and watched it as soon as we got back to her place. Needless to say that The Ring left one hell of an impression on me. To this day I'm deeply suspicious to any wells. Same with televisions and mirrors. I had a mirror like the one in the movie in my room. I didn't trust it after first seeing the movie and was scared of my tv, too. And anything resembling Samara is just pure nightmare fuel to me. Anima from a game called The Evil Within 2 must be the worst one right after Samara herself. That is one of my favorite games of all time, but that character just scares my soul out of me. But, in addition to a never-ending traumas this movie also gave me one of my favorite characters of all time, because I really ended up liking Noah. Of course I like the characters who end up dying. Interesting little fact, on the DVD, hidden behind one of the menus actually is the footage of Samara's video tape in its entirety. This was a really great reaction, I truly enjoyed it!

Fun Fact: Kate Beckinsale was originally considered for the role of Rachel in The Ring, but the producers felt that she looked too young at the time to be a single mom... in spite of the fact that she had already given birth to her daughter, Lily Mo Sheen, three years earlier. Jennifer Love Hewitt was also offered the role, but turned it down.

There is a very subtle, to me very eerie, explanation for Samara's reasoning of utilizing video to enact massive revenge when Rachel looks out her apartment window to the apartment building across the way and sees through those windows that nearly everyone is watching television. Unfortunately for me The Ring 2 is a snore although there are a lot of folk who like it for some reason I can't figure out, yet it's directed by the director of Ringu, the original Japenese film, which is quite good.

The reason the movie called "The Ring" was because in order to survive the curse you need to make a copy and show it to others and so on, passing the curse like an endless spiral, thus the title was actually refered to the curse. Samara Morgan was a psychic with thoughtography ability to inprint images onto objects, film and into one's mind, turning them crazy or killing them instantly. The cursed video tape wasn't filmed by Samara but saw by Samara, the teens went to the cabin and tried to record a football game, however being on top of the well they unintentionly created the cursed video tape.

I'm sorry not only am I the one to first commet but 3 at that, hell, I do apologize but also when this was first released and even still some today in Japan, first released there, not only was this actually a folklore there, but alot of Japan were scared to death to answer the phone and what they watched cause they believed it to be true. Now to this day alot more of them have figured out its just a film/folklore but some of Japan still do believe this to be somewhat true and that some have experienced similar things. Do you know the original and the remake of Evil Dead, the Raimi Brothers started and do alot of the work in this film as well as with "The Grudge". Sam Raimi and his brothers will always be known for some of the most incredible stories and filmmaking in history today and even in the future. But one more thing there is a story/folklore of a real pre-teen girl named Samara, somewhere in Japan, actually was outside playing and somehow fell in a well and I don't remember for how long but she did actually survive a little longer then most kids would. Not saying it's true but ive really delved into these films and it read alot of most stories I have read it is believed something happened, in a similar way if not a well.

Cool reaction. And regarding the japanese version, it's not so much about "toning it down", but more about the overall vibe/feeling and these remakes never understand what makes the originals scary. They always have to add some cliche horror stuff and some "cool characters" on top and in comparison the difference really shows. Japanese Horror movies just know - without the need of using any jumpscares or trendy special effects - how to slowly build a very haunting and creepy atmosphere. Also they don't try to fit into a common movie-structure, they focus purely on a creepy story presented in a creepy way. So yeah in other words, if you're going to watch japanese horror originals (no matter which movie), I'll be ready. ;D

The original Japanese "Ringu" worked, because it came from a country where they not only actually culturally BELIEVE in ghosts, but believe they'll come back as stringy-haired, marionette-resurrected corpses with a bad grudge. Here, the US remake just fell into that late-90's/early-00's ghetto of "Mommy-horror", where respectable actresses could slum in big-studio horror movies, if they were maternally panicking about saving their trophy-child from dark forces.

I will also recommend Ringu (Japan), but if you want a US sequel, I recommend skipping the Ring 2 and going straight to Rings (the newest US movie) for your answers to this (again, US) story.

For foreign horror I'd suggest the Thai version of "Shutter" (2004)

Glad that you have enjoyed, the original one is way more creepy and pessimistic, for some reason every time that a horror movie from another country has an American remake they make more soft.

OK, i got it. The Ring is ranking at top tier for some people. But the only thing that runs to my mind, while watching is: Why is everything green? Green sheets of paper, green sky, green horses! Who told the director that it would have been the greatest thing since slice bread to shoot that whole movie via green filters? Sorry but that shit really killed any mood for me. I mean... What's the deal with all that green?

Sure u should give the Japanese movie a shot. But I got the video in the mail like six months before the movie came out. And this was way before we had real access to the interne. And I watched it with the guys at the tattoo shop. And we were like what the hell was that. And six months later and I was like oh that's what that was. If u liked this give The Grudge a try. Later

Sweet dreams Jen! For me the original is better, as the Japanese have a real knack at creating very atmospheric films without having to chuck in a bit of gore, although they can do that as well. J-Horror films overall feel like things are happening due to legends or superstitions from the past. I think you'd have been better watching the original first, and then this version, to see what has been added to the original concept/story line. There are too many Asian horror films to recommend, but I'd say that Ju-on: The Grudge, The Eye and One Missed Call (in particular), are worth a viewing. I think they've also all had the westernised re-make treatment.

The original Japanese version is a lot more scary and way better, especially the TV scene.

have a couple of movies would love to see your reaction to someone else already said The Descent (But apparently there are two versions I've only seen the UK version with the creepiest ending. Apparently the American version is different) and there's a movie called The Hole which I liked with Thora Birch in it

I’ve seen The Hole with Thora Birch and it haunts my dreams to this day, so dark! I watched it before I had the channel but that would be an interesting one to react to

I saw this one first, then the original and I liked the original a little better, they are not exactly the same, but I liked the effects, camera/color grading for the remake better

Hi, Jen. Sorry I haven't been around. I have finally gotten a little bit tired of Buffy reactions after watching about 700 billion of them. I like the Ring. I'll see what you think.

And the original Japanese version is even creepier. Welcome to Japanese horror. If you ever watch the grudge watch the Japanese version. Actually it's a good rule of thumb to always watch the original. Hollywood makes very nice looking movies but somehow they have forgotten how to make them feel real. They are too polished, too plastic, tooo Hollywood. Movies made in the 80s or before had a grit to them...a realism. And that's what horror movies from other countries still have. A sense of ..this is happening. The stuff Hollywood makes feels like a theme park ride
